the lack of hype is probably due to Bankrupt being really disappointing after WAP, and the two four-year gaps between albums

the only tracks I really rate on Bankrupt are Trying to Be Cool and Drakkar Noir. it sounds really muddy and overlaboured, and the tracks are full of awkward twists instead of the breezy pop they were great at. I think I read that they wrote a lot of the songs on it by stitching together fragments they'd written and you can really hear the seams. J-Boy feels like a successful version of the sound they were going for on it

don't like it anywhere near as much as jboy but some of the other tracks theyre playing live (fior di latte and lovelife) sound really nice

Yeah, I'm into this. The "open up your legs" part is very Sebastien Tellier. Lyrically and the way he delivers it.

There are a lot of great things about this track, especially the groove under the verses which for some reason remind me of rave classic "Pure (Pure Energy)" by GTO.

Is that the first time they've ever had any French lyrics in a song?

This sounds pretty good! ideally, phoenix should always sound breezy and nimble imo. bankrupt was comparatively ungainly.

three weeks pass...

I'm really enjoying the new record. It's so glossy but not as overproduced as Bankrupt. Shame it's barely getting any attention.

it's definitely better than Bankrupt but a bit disappointing since it's not all as great as J-Boy. Lovelife and Fior di Latte are really good too though

agreed, it's a definite improvement on Bankrupt but feels a bit flat. Can we get one more "Funky Squaredance" for old time's sake?

They've never bettered their debut have they...

They're one of the few bands where I really struggle to pick a favourite album. Alphabetical used to be my answer but some days it could be It's Never Been Like That.

I had dismissed this record after half a cursory listen - too saccharine or something. And then this afternoon I started involuntarily humming the title track. Still, an annoying buzzcocks line and "sophisticated soft rock" dig...

xp Alphabetical probably edges it for me but could be any of the first four really

This is such a pleasure to listen to (especially after the harsh sounding and lackluster 'Bankrupt'). No really memorable singles but definitely a go to for the car over the summer.

I can't put my finger on why I dislike this album so much, yet I like all their other albums. It's not hugely different in sound yet there's something in the stew that's not agreeing with me this time.
