This has been one of my most anticipated albums from the last sixteen months or so. Everything I've heard so far (only the first two songs, honestly) have been growers, so my expectations are still pretty high.

aw this is the dude i saw open for maxwell a few years ago! great album cover. songs sound promising
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 12 May 2017 20:23 (six years ago) link
this kind of feels like what would happen if you sank a bilal record in an acid bath
i'm into it
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 19 May 2017 20:18 (six years ago) link
He is so much better than Bilal, in every aspect of everything.
This album is so loverly and warm. Between this, Slowdive, and the Feelies, this is shaping up to be a damn fine year for new music.
― Austin, Friday, 19 May 2017 22:17 (six years ago) link
pfft give him a few albums guy, bilal is the man
― ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 19 May 2017 23:17 (six years ago) link
Nope, Bilal has always been a hack.
― Austin, Saturday, 20 May 2017 00:40 (six years ago) link

This is coming from a dude who bought First Born Second on its release date. Sorry, man. He's just not good.

I miss the guitar stuff that he did on the EPs from a couple years ago, but after a few more listens, I can safely say it's my so far favorite album of the year
― Austin, Saturday, 20 May 2017 14:49 (six years ago) link
I saw him open for Adrianne Lenker last night. His performance style is ... odd. And he really swallows his vocals in a way that seems like maybe it works on record but not so well live.

Nick's second album, WILL THIS MAKE ME GOOD, is set to be released this Friday, 15 May.
The pre-album release is called "Qadir" and it's fucking delectable:https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QRVmNEidUkw
One other tune, titled "Crumpy", has also been released. It's solid:https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Li1aCaoAnCw
Expecting good things.

Hopefully at this point I can stop seeing his name and immediately wondering why Pitchfork is suddenly interested in the solo work of the dude from 311.

Haven't heard Crumpy but Qadir is niiiiiice

Green Twins has such an awful album cover ugh
After one listen, Green Twins is way better. I don't know. . . this new one is a little too lo-fi / druggy on first impression. It's nowhere near as near melodic as his past music and the way it plays feels kind of like a extended single for 'Qadir' as that's the only song that really sticks after the music has stopped.
I'll listen more for sure, but initially feeling underwhelmed unfortunately.

there's this new thing with roy nathanson: https://nickhakim.bandcamp.com/album/small-things
previewing and it sounds alright. seems like he's content to just float along doing really slow druggy tunes that place importance on words over melody. i'll probably buy it because it's bandcamp friday, but it bums me out a little that he never got more recognition for green twins. at this point, 'bet she looks like you' is a personal classic and one of the best pure love songs of the past few generations. i know he went through personal hell to make it, but that second album seriously squandered any momentum.

"vertigo." new album out end of october.
i like this one. it's nothing stunning, but it's pretty.

i haven't been enamored with anything of his since green twins, but this one is nice

"vertigo" has been growing on me, so i'm going back to the roy nathanson record. "moonman" ain't nothin new, but it sure is pretty:

the whole thing has a kind of 2am jazz-informed mc 900 ft jesus vibe to it that i'm digging a lot more than i remember. it's short too -just under 30 minutes- so it's not like WILL THIS MAKE ME GOOD, where the ship gets lost in a sea of familiarity. i could see archy marshall just saying fuckit and doing an album in a similar vein. hipster doofus as hell, but not in a bad way.
looking forward to the new album.

nothing else to do and i haven't listened to this yet, so i'm gonna live post initial thoughts on the new album, which is called COMETA and has been out for over a month by this point.
initial reaction: the first track "ani" is my favorite thing he's done since "bet she looks like you." rad fucken start, holy shit.

definitely going for a different vibe overall with this album. songs are shorter, more structured. not really green twins redux, either. i'm on "feeling myself" amd it's this weird growly beardo prince thing and not only is it good, he's never a song that songs like it.

okay, to follow up on that more specifically-
if you're like me and fetter and prefer the early eps over everything, skip straight to "slid under": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZnrmt_Z_ew
album highlight right now.

otherwise, i understand why they put that in the middle of side two. it drops off. some of the songs are more of the soup from the last album, but just shorter.
overall though, yeah! good record! singles didn't do it justice at all. best thing he's done since green twins, easily. very solid 3.5 mics.
