Vahid psyched him with his awesome hypothetical tracklist - Burial knew he couldn't top it.

Tim F, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 03:15 (fourteen years ago) link

the funny thing was that at the time i was trying to come up with the WORST tracklisting i could imagine stuffed with the tackiest shit possible ... but looking at it now it actually sounds like a rad mix to me ... sort of, anyway

three weeks pass...

some bright spark on the dubstepforum spotted this in the st holdings release list:

"dBridge ‘Wonder Where’:
... Wonder Where is quite unique in the way it is regularly getting played in the sets of DJs from many genres. Drum n bass dj’s such as
Marcus Intalex, to soulfull house Dj’s like Benji B, and also Dubstep pioneer DJ Skream has regularly been finishing his sets with it.
Dubstep legend Burial has also seen fit to include it in his upcoming DJ Kicks mix."

so, hmm.

languid samuel l. jackson (jim), Friday, 29 May 2009 15:12 (fourteen years ago) link

Hmm, indeed. Burial's DJ Kicks album is the new Chinese Democracy.

four months pass...

Just heard the new Burial track, "Fostercare", on Hyperdub's 5: Five Years of Hyperdub comp ...

MASSIVE tune.

I'm close to saying this guy steps up his game with each subsequent release.

untrue pitch, Monday, 5 October 2009 23:13 (fourteen years ago) link

That comp just hit eMusic today. Yeah, the Burial track sounds amazing.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 5 October 2009 23:15 (fourteen years ago) link

burial track sounds like a chill lounge comp joint

why is this so amazingly great 2 u

xhuxk mangione (deej), Monday, 5 October 2009 23:21 (fourteen years ago) link

barely sounds like there's a song there at all

een, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 00:05 (fourteen years ago) link

this is not his best, don't even think it sounds as good as the two unreleased ones that were aired on the radio

mh, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 00:33 (fourteen years ago) link

Admittedly, it's a subtle track; requires a longer attention span than a lot of music these days. But there's some pretty stunning work going on in there. This isn't a giant leap forward, but a refinement of his sound.

A lot of dubstep (even a lot of the good stuff) tries to grab your attention from the start with some insane new beat. I think one of the reasons Burial will be remembered as one of the genre's greats is because of his sense of restraint. He can hold back on the novelty on one track and then just kill it with a massive beat on the next.

untrue pitch, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 00:36 (fourteen years ago) link

are you serious

xhuxk mangione (deej), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 00:45 (fourteen years ago) link

surprised no one's posted this today:

'In a forthcoming interview with Clash, Daddy G of Bristol legends Massive Attack reveals that Burial is planning to make a remix album of Massive Attack material, in a modern equivalent of 1995's Massive Attack and No (sic) Professor's No Protection.

"I don't know if I should really say this … What the plan is... you know that Mad Professor record that we did? (1995's No Protection). Essentially trying to get that together, where Burial essentially remixes quite a lot of the new tracks. Brings out a different version of quite a lot of the tracks that we've done".'

Thought about posting that, but it smelled a little too much like the DJ Kicks announcement from last year. Still waiting for that one! (http://www.amazon.co.uk/DJ-Kicks-Burial/dp/B00195HVBQ)

untrue pitch, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 01:24 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't even trust that Daddy G really knows what's going on with that project. But, hey ... hoping to be surprised.

untrue pitch, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 01:25 (fourteen years ago) link

I can't say that Fostercare is among Burial's best tracks, but I like it. It is slight, but that's part of the appeal. I love how you can hear the footsteps falling through the song, like you're following someone wandering the streets alone at night. And the vocal bits are a bit more varied than on Untrue, in pitch, texture and the distortion applied to them.

So not his best song, by any means. But an interesting piece of noir.

Some of the other tracks on Disc One of this Hyperdub comp are slammin', e.g., the Darkstar and Flying Lotus tracks.

maybe i just dont get the point of his shit altogether

No worries. I don't get Vampire Weekend.

"maybe i just dont get the point of his shit altogether"

That sort of defeats the purpose of listening to him then.

i dont like VW shit but i 'get it,' like it has an internal logic & i see where the appeal lies. every defense of this ive read feels reducible to folks being really really glad someone could turn 2step into idm a decade late (give a facile but pretend-intellectualized 'justification' for pop music that doesn't obviously appeal to ppl's populist impulses, just their anti-populist ones)

xhuxk mangione (deej), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 03:43 (fourteen years ago) link

like, its the kind of thing i dig for a song but i cant really get on board with this 'the artist is a genius & his albums are near perfect' kind of stuff ... it just seems like compared to the endless variety & quality in the genres as a whole that he's inspired by there's a lot more going on, many more strands to follow

Pop music that only appeals to people's anti-populist impulses? Huh?? Are you discussing Burial or Paris Hilton's musical output? ...

Kidding aside, I'm curious what Burial song does work for you then (?)

untrue pitch, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 04:41 (fourteen years ago) link

i liked 'archangel' for awhile. i thought it made sense w/ the narrative that kinda came up around his music. its just that this narrative works for a song but doesnt really feel like it deserves to define an artist's career, or something -- there's not enough there to maintain my interest over more than a track

legend of a tune

Fallopian Journey in Oprah (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 05:36 (fourteen years ago) link

I thought Burial was a nerdier Massive Attack for the 2000s, with a little bit of the idm baggage along for the ride. Which is fine, because I really like his stuff.

Almost posted that Daddy G quote, but if you read the original interview, it sounds more like the idea of approaching him's there, not necessarily that he's been approached. Anyone from MA saying they're going to do something is best approached with an "oh, that's a neat idea" if you like it, or dismissive eye-rolling...

Untrue is so much better though.

abcfsk, Monday, 23 November 2009 10:57 (fourteen years ago) link

it isnt, hence why it is the wrong album ;)

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 23 November 2009 11:03 (fourteen years ago) link

I think they both have things to recommend them. Like the vocals on the second one a lot. The first is more 'tracky' - which also is also a good thing.

Treblekicker, Monday, 23 November 2009 13:47 (fourteen years ago) link

yea i like the first one a lot more

mark cl, Monday, 23 November 2009 14:06 (fourteen years ago) link

2nd one was like him trying to get a bit more commercial and song-y except he didnt realise he couldnt actually write songs

plus he got some really average vocalists

i suppose he thought he could write a few new 'gabriel's for the dubstep era

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 23 November 2009 14:15 (fourteen years ago) link

I didn't really see it that way. I just saw it as more vocal heavy, not more song structured. To this day I still listen to both. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Treblekicker, Monday, 23 November 2009 14:21 (fourteen years ago) link

i should give it another go really.

Surely the most inevitable collab ever but if it's as good as Moth with added Thom it could be amazing.
