Teena Marie is an acquired taste, especially her self-produced ballads after 1983.
I can't decide which is lovelier: If You Were Tonight or Sunshine

the former but not by much
given what this poll seems to be yielding now i'm gonna go ahead and guess "sunshine" will not make it at all

an awesome happy fun jam that i think i voted for
still kinda unthinkable to see it above some of these others tho ;_;
― dyl, Tuesday, 9 May 2017 18:08 (six years ago) link
Coulda voted for that, but got the latent "more pop than R&B" voice in my ear
― insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 9 May 2017 18:08 (six years ago) link
r&b radio often was quite poppy around that time and the pointers straddled that then-narrow gulf w/ ease

"I need your lovin," "square biz," "behind the groove" ... there are tons of Teena jams that are on another sonic planet from "Lovergirl."

ppl were dogging lovergirl in the other thread for sounding briefly like the intro to a tv newscast but i think it's one of her great fake prince jams
i should've nominated "lips to find you," not that anyone else would've voted for it

Incredible tune, there's not much better than deep gospel house! It wasn't in my ballot tho, 'cos I had to cut off all house music to trim it to 100. But if we'll ever do an '80s electronic music poll, I promise to rank it high.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 9 May 2017 20:38 (six years ago) link
I played my copy of "Promised Land" to a friend last year, without telling her what I was putting on. As soon as the bassline kicked in, she burst into tears.
I wasn't sure whether soulful house was going to mesh with my notions of what constitutes 80s R&B, but in the context of my full long list, it meshed just fine.

Clouds Across the Moon is an incredible tune; airy, sad, pretty, groovy, all in one otherworldly melange. The album it's from is pretty great too, though obviously nothing on it else can quite touch Clouds...
