The David Brooks twist was nice.

I liked their almost empathetic take on the rod dreher profile

Would it be worth it to have a thread on political podcasts? I consume a lot of them, and want a place to share good stuff

Bio-Digital Jezza (kingfish), Friday, 5 May 2017 20:38 (six years ago) link

I think this is a p good thread to do that in but follow yr heart

During the Harvard ep I kept thinking "there's a decent chance one of their targets' kids or grandkids is in the audience."

One hopes

I guess thats all podcasts in general tho..

subthought: imagine being in the marketing enforcement dept at blue apron and having to listen to thousands of shitty podcasters read your copy for compliance

anybody fuck with street fight? it's pretty unfocused and meandering and goofy but I dig it. it's sort of my go to when I'm all caught up on my main 4-5 pods. love those dudes' voices.

constitutional crises they fly at u face (will), Saturday, 6 May 2017 00:26 (six years ago) link

Yeah I listen to it, like you mostly as a backup but they're likeabke guys who occasionally have truly great moments.

yeah loved the shit out of the Mike Rowe so.

I've known a lot of (southern-fried) "lonnie's" in my day

*Mike Rowe ep

constitutional crises they fly at u face (will), Saturday, 6 May 2017 00:31 (six years ago) link

None of the Street Fight eps caught my eye when I added them to Pocket Casts a few months ago but I'm always down for someone bashing Rowe. Fuck that guy.

El Tuomasbot (milo z), Saturday, 6 May 2017 01:13 (six years ago) link

I feel like there was a good episode of Street Fight about shoplifting and "self-check" cashiers. They're really in their wheelhouse when they talk stuff like that.

I'd love some specific ep # recommendations for them cause their output is insane

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Saturday, 6 May 2017 01:37 (six years ago) link

man wish I could help on that front but I just kinda drop in here and there when I'm taking the dog and/ or my one-hitter for a walk.

No. But I think the internet throws into sharper relief how arbitrary (in terms of talent, though not politically) who gets these lucrative op ed gigs.

This is going to shock the younger people in the room, but there was a time, what, 15, 20 years ago? when brooks was actually a very good writer and sharp observer. having to scratch his chin and dribble out 800 words several times a week instead of writing long reported pieces totally destroyed him.

his books were probably never good but i've never read any of them so i'm not sure.

I read Bobos many years ago and it's dumb as hell but he didn't exactly come off as the humorless priggish concern troll he's been since the black guy got elected

Started "Mike Rowe Makes You Want To Sweat" on Street Fight while walking around for a bit, it's a nice change of pace from Chapo - they're more relatable as just broke flyover dudes vs. the NY media people.

Good interview with Liza Featherstone:

Listening to The Dig (Liza Featherstone on the Fight Against Lean-In Feminism)

The Women’s March on Washington sent a clear message that women would be at the lead in battling the right in the years to come. But it left unresolved significant divides that pervaded the 2016 primary campaign, as the many signs paying homage to Hillary Clinton made clear. Featherstone throws down Clinton's faux feminism, the Women's Strike, Bill de Blasio and more.

felix is on the latest episode of a video game podcast called no cartridge talking about the metal gear solid series.

it's pretty hilarious that felix is never more passionate about a subject on any podcast I've heard him on than when he's talking about MGS, Les Miserables the musical, and, in a distant third, the GCC countries.

the Les Mis thing is one of my favorite episodes!

i listened to it twice, which i don't think I've done for any other episode.

I wish they'd do more episodes and weird one-offs in praise of things tbh

yeah i mean matt christman sounded quite well into his beers and extra supine when he was talking about the german 1848 revolutionary who fought for the union army in the civil war - can't remember the name - but it was also a nice change of pace.

I never read bobos but I remember reading reviews of it and maybe excerpts or columns adapted from it or something. At the time I was much younger and less savvy, but it did seem to me like he had identified a significant politico-cultural phenomenon that still has implications today. I don't know to what extent other critics were identifying the same phenomenon at the time/to what extent it was original.

Les Miz, christ, how awful

new ep w/ Libby Watson is quite satisfying, esp the shame roll call of anti-Chelsea Manning pundits

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Saturday, 20 May 2017 21:15 (six years ago) link

No Matt on this one, which is a problem because I tend to think he's the real reason the show often feels fresh and revelatory. Without him the show tends to feel like just what it's detractors imagine it is (sometimes).

ryan, Saturday, 20 May 2017 22:59 (six years ago) link

i feel you on that but i think amber and felix have great chemistry when they're riffing like in this episode (and i say that as someone who usually finds felix kind of tiring).

oiocha, Sunday, 21 May 2017 01:44 (six years ago) link

yeah this was one of amber's best eps, she may have not been out of her gourd for once lol

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Sunday, 21 May 2017 02:31 (six years ago) link

I wish Amber's other podcast wasn't with Sam Kriss (who's pretty much unreadable and unlistenable to me) - usually feel like she's the most on the ball Chapo or at least less enamored with Twitter humor.

El Tuomasbot (milo z), Sunday, 21 May 2017 08:07 (six years ago) link

China Mieville interview didn't make me want to read his book on the Russian revolution any more (and I'm a fan); I can understand a leftist backlash to characterising that period as entirely evil and catastrophic but seeing Lenin as flawed but admirable is kinda where I draw the line. Lots of cool imagery though.

Not as down on the West Wing as they are (the benefits of not watching it since it was on air) but I could only make it to the end of Jeff Daniels' stupid speech in the pilot. Sounds like it managed to get even worse, I almost want to hate watch it to see him cockblock himself repeatedly.

so felix's bio on wapo says he is a "mindset expert," is that dirtbag slang, a chapo in-joke, or like an actual popular culture/occupational role?https://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2017/05/25/face-it-the-body-slammed-reporter-did-just-what-you-would-have-done/?utm_term=.c55f4459aef8#comments
