I've purged all of these guys and their fellow travelers from my life and Twitter feed and I'm much happier for it. More power to 'em but I just can't maintain that level of jaundice and make it through the day.

Ive only been listening for a couple weeks but this new ep is trash. Its neither funny nor interesting.

officer sonny bonds, lytton pd (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 19:43 (six years ago) link

you should listen to cum town

flappy bird, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 19:45 (six years ago) link

Or the Katie Halper Show

the harvard interview is p good, the Shining ep was bad (I did like the live Harvard ep though - much better / more novel gimmick)

in terms of less histrionic Chapo alternatives, Dead Pundits isn't bad, though I find the host a bit irritating. Their recent ep with Angela Nagle was really good and covered some different ground from her Chapo ep.

Their site finally went live:

I'm glad it's not a tricked-out Outline Magazine-style Web 17.0 monstrosity

why would you want a less histrionic Chapo

Jay Elettronica Viva (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 4 May 2017 02:45 (six years ago) link

new premium episode is great, classic drive by of douthat, brooks, and stephens

flappy bird, Thursday, 4 May 2017 05:37 (six years ago) link

Halper good, as is Delete Your Account, but both are more serious bizniz politics than Chapo.

I mean, *I* don'yy, but I can imagine it could grow wearying for some.

I'm trying to winnow my political podcasts down, so maybe I can unsub Chapo and just yell "fuck you" every now and then while listening to the Weeds for the same effect

new premium ep was their best in a while, also might include the first time they've ever seriously responded to criticism?

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 4 May 2017 12:54 (six years ago) link

A left podcast I've been getting into recently is The Dig with Daniel Denvir. Most recent ep with media critic Adam Johnson is excellent as was the one with Mark Blyth.

It's definitely on the more serious and less dirty end of the dirtbag left.

god i hate that fucking name. it sounds like a festival tent for teenagers

flappy bird, Thursday, 4 May 2017 15:22 (six years ago) link

The Dig?

I think it just sounds a bit generic. Could be many things.

clean shot

no i was referring to "the dirtbag left." i don't mind silly podcast names, but silly names for political movements? nahhh. i don't think it's really accurate, either. how are they dirtbags? it's just lazy. oh well they came up with it.

flappy bird, Thursday, 4 May 2017 17:08 (six years ago) link

felix sounds like a total dirtbag tbh

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 4 May 2017 17:12 (six years ago) link

these podcasts make me think every socialist is a lispy east coaster

officer sonny bonds, lytton pd (mayor jingleberries), Thursday, 4 May 2017 17:53 (six years ago) link

dirtbag left feels very apropos to this socialist girl who has spent more time yelling at David Brooks than washing her hair this week

Def agree on the live episodes being excruciating as podcasts. The "most evil people from Harvard" episode was like a bad "intellectual" party game drawn out for way too long.

i thought the harvard episode was fine, the most recent one with the shining stuff was execrable in the main imo

-_- (jim in vancouver), Friday, 5 May 2017 16:48 (six years ago) link

haven't listened to yesterday's episode yet but from description it's a series of reading series (lol) bits from times op-eds which is extremely my shit as far as chapo goes

-_- (jim in vancouver), Friday, 5 May 2017 16:50 (six years ago) link

I've really been enjoying seeing a generation of people turn on the NYTimes opned page. It was practically holy in my house and I only started to question it in my 20s.

was it ever good?

flopson, Friday, 5 May 2017 17:37 (six years ago) link

No. But I think the internet throws into sharper relief how arbitrary (in terms of talent, though not politically) who gets these lucrative op ed gigs.

i was almost glad that douthat did the pro le pen op-ed because i knew chapo were going to cover it

-_- (jim in vancouver), Friday, 5 May 2017 17:43 (six years ago) link

but i was also a bit disappointed in our boy ross

-_- (jim in vancouver), Friday, 5 May 2017 17:44 (six years ago) link

The David Brooks twist was nice.

I liked their almost empathetic take on the rod dreher profile

Would it be worth it to have a thread on political podcasts? I consume a lot of them, and want a place to share good stuff

Bio-Digital Jezza (kingfish), Friday, 5 May 2017 20:38 (six years ago) link

I think this is a p good thread to do that in but follow yr heart

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 5 May 2017 20:40 (six years ago) link

During the Harvard ep I kept thinking "there's a decent chance one of their targets' kids or grandkids is in the audience."

One hopes

I guess thats all podcasts in general tho..

subthought: imagine being in the marketing enforcement dept at blue apron and having to listen to thousands of shitty podcasters read your copy for compliance

anybody fuck with street fight? it's pretty unfocused and meandering and goofy but I dig it. it's sort of my go to when I'm all caught up on my main 4-5 pods. love those dudes' voices.

constitutional crises they fly at u face (will), Saturday, 6 May 2017 00:26 (six years ago) link

Yeah I listen to it, like you mostly as a backup but they're likeabke guys who occasionally have truly great moments.

yeah loved the shit out of the Mike Rowe so.

I've known a lot of (southern-fried) "lonnie's" in my day

*Mike Rowe ep

constitutional crises they fly at u face (will), Saturday, 6 May 2017 00:31 (six years ago) link

None of the Street Fight eps caught my eye when I added them to Pocket Casts a few months ago but I'm always down for someone bashing Rowe. Fuck that guy.

El Tuomasbot (milo z), Saturday, 6 May 2017 01:13 (six years ago) link

I feel like there was a good episode of Street Fight about shoplifting and "self-check" cashiers. They're really in their wheelhouse when they talk stuff like that.

I'd love some specific ep # recommendations for them cause their output is insane

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Saturday, 6 May 2017 01:37 (six years ago) link

man wish I could help on that front but I just kinda drop in here and there when I'm taking the dog and/ or my one-hitter for a walk.

This is going to shock the younger people in the room, but there was a time, what, 15, 20 years ago? when brooks was actually a very good writer and sharp observer. having to scratch his chin and dribble out 800 words several times a week instead of writing long reported pieces totally destroyed him.

his books were probably never good but i've never read any of them so i'm not sure.

that saucy young evangelical bride probably zapped his essence
