It's killing me that I can't hear this. I can't fathom its absence form the net.

afriendlypioneer, Friday, 5 May 2017 15:59 (six years ago) link

hahaha me too. I just want to hear a minute of it, to know what the sound is like :P I guess the fact that it's a 7" limited to 500 copies which (I imagine) sold almost exclusively in Japan will do it.

frogbs, Friday, 5 May 2017 16:05 (six years ago) link

alas, where is What.CD when you need it ?

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 5 May 2017 16:05 (six years ago) link

I resorted to translating a couple reviews on Amazon.co.jp, but the translations are incomprehensible, though seem positive.

afriendlypioneer, Friday, 5 May 2017 17:41 (six years ago) link

it literally doesn't exist online as sound clip?

definitely sounds like the album title

ufo, Friday, 12 May 2017 03:40 (six years ago) link

pretty cool. not mindblowing but i like.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 12 May 2017 12:53 (six years ago) link

yeah its something that would've slotted into Sensuous though it feels a lot more developed than most of that album. video is amazing, of course.

frogbs, Friday, 12 May 2017 13:08 (six years ago) link

Tracklist:
01 “If You’re Here”
02 “Sometime / Someplace”
03 “Dear Future Person”
04 “Surfing On A Mind Wave Pt 2″
05 “In A Dream”
06 “Helix / Spiral”
07 “Mellow Yellow Feel”
08 “The Spell Of A Vanishing Loveliness”
09 “The Rain Song”
10 “Crépuscule”

i want to hear a song called "Surfing On A Mind Wave Pt 2"

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 12 May 2017 14:48 (six years ago) link

Love it.

afriendlypioneer, Friday, 12 May 2017 15:18 (six years ago) link

so that's the lead-off track? wow

frogbs, Friday, 12 May 2017 15:22 (six years ago) link

it's really promising, i'm glad he's managed to push this sound further.

ufo, Friday, 12 May 2017 15:29 (six years ago) link

as much as I like the stuff he's done since Point I do think it comes off sometimes like a collection of parts. those same parts are in this track of course - it really does seem like it uses "Fit Song" as sort of a launch point - but this definitely feels like a completed song. I've listened to it four times now and it's really growing on me.

frogbs, Friday, 12 May 2017 15:34 (six years ago) link

It's much more grounded in the song than an exercise, which "Fit Song" feels like. Think his time with MetaFive helped him out.

afriendlypioneer, Friday, 12 May 2017 15:36 (six years ago) link

yeah there's a real song with a climax to it, more than just a nice intricate groove bit like a lot of Point and Sensuous was.

it feels closer to the salyu x salyu album than either of those actually

ufo, Friday, 12 May 2017 15:47 (six years ago) link

maybe I'm just wildly speculating but I'm guessing his recent divorce is gonna factor into the sound here

frogbs, Friday, 12 May 2017 16:39 (six years ago) link

Is anyone getting a faint trace of Hosono from this or am I projecting?

MaresNest, Friday, 12 May 2017 18:31 (six years ago) link

i have been listening to Miharu Koshi's "Parallelism" a lot these days and imo Cornelius's Fantasma-and-posts works are super influenced by that stuff. baroque robotic pop with lots of cool percussion, things zipping by, drum-and-bass influences, etc.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 12 May 2017 18:39 (six years ago) link

that album was produced by Hosono in 1984 and i highly recommend for fans of Cornelius. "Toubousha" sounds a lot like "Clash".

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 12 May 2017 18:42 (six years ago) link

it does sound like something on Medicine Compilation. now I hear it.

frogbs, Friday, 12 May 2017 18:44 (six years ago) link

loving this more an more, both msic and video. i love the calligraphy oscilloscope, that painting that starts waving and extruding and turning 3D, the elements drifting and clipping in and out of reality.

three weeks pass...

Another track released, along with another awesome video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zi4yYCL2reU&feature=youtu.be

this track definitely feels like it could fit in with Metafive, I dig it

frogbs, Friday, 9 June 2017 17:01 (six years ago) link

that's great. the solo is crazy awesome.

afriendlypioneer, Friday, 9 June 2017 19:45 (six years ago) link

Momentary derail. How do we feel about the most recent Shugo Tokomaru record? Both artists make good companions I feel..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOiJomOkaVA

MaresNest, Friday, 9 June 2017 20:20 (six years ago) link

I admit most Cornelius I've heard I'm quite indifferent towards except for Fantasma and Point, which I really love, and I'm really impressed by what he's released from the new one so far. I reckon this is going to be great.

And I'm a big fan of Shugo Tokumaru; he's reliably good but that last one didn't end up being one of my favourites of his.

So this is supposedly out today?

afriendlypioneer, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 16:47 (six years ago) link

i went on the website and there was a new video but i couldn't watch it in my country =(

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 28 June 2017 17:03 (six years ago) link

uh so apparently the US date is now 7/21/17? wtf

frogbs, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 18:02 (six years ago) link

It's out in Japan, but I'm guessing they're not big on digital releases (?).

https://www.amazon.co.jp/Mellow-Waves-CORNELIUS/dp/B0723H9FKT

Don't think it's possible to buy w/o a Japanese account, though. I used to be able to buy stuff off International Amazon pages. :(

afriendlypioneer, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 18:04 (six years ago) link

30 bucks on US amazon by third-party sellers. I'm going to hold out for a little bit.

skip, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 19:09 (six years ago) link

I understand that Japanese artists/labels are reluctant to fully embrace digital sales since that's one of the few places that people still buy CDs in significant number, but I wish the distribution for a lot of stuff was better, at least for artists like Cornelius who have a profile in the West.

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 19:35 (six years ago) link

if the stream i received today has correct info, it'll be available here on july 21

It's now floating around the interwebs...

skip, Thursday, 29 June 2017 04:23 (six years ago) link

There are some jammy tracks but on the whole the album is a little too slow and ambient for my taste.

I'm sure others will like it a lot though.

skip, Thursday, 29 June 2017 05:31 (six years ago) link

It doesn't sound anything like the the previous albums, so I'm pretty excited about it. Now I just need to acquaint myself with it a little more.

afriendlypioneer, Thursday, 29 June 2017 15:46 (six years ago) link

on listen two now. its pretty cool. at first all the songs sounded the same. now it feels more like waves of sound.

what is that note he always uses w the repeater? that echoey clipped guitar that always leads into a bossa nova? is that a dotted fourth?

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 30 June 2017 00:25 (six years ago) link

it is mellow af

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 30 June 2017 00:26 (six years ago) link

apparently cornelius covered "passionfruit" for a spotify session. i've never heard anything drake's done in his entire career and also i don't spotify so i'll probably never hear it, but i bet it's good.

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Friday, 18 May 2018 02:03 (five years ago) link

it's pretty groovy and shockingly faithful to the original

there's a volume 3 NHK comp coming out? damn!

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 02:13 (five years ago) link

That's great. The second one is awesome.

afriendlypioneer, Thursday, 21 June 2018 13:59 (five years ago) link

i forget the name of the track, but the interview about fave albums reminds me that he played a song at field day a few weeks back that was basically Appetite by prefab sprout. not that thats a bad thing, in fact its a very good thing.

only on the first track but I'm really amused by this so far

frogbs, Saturday, 22 September 2018 21:46 (five years ago) link

I dont think this album is particularly mellow

calstars, Saturday, 22 September 2018 21:53 (five years ago) link

new NHK record is good. they're all inconsistent and fun and better than mellow waves.

(⊙_⊙?) (original bgm), Wednesday, 26 September 2018 04:35 (five years ago) link

four weeks pass...

I just picked it up. I think all 3 NHK records are kind of the same but they're all really tasty - lots of great moments on this one.

Not sure what to think of Ripple Waves yet - I kinda wish the new stuff had been sectioned off into an EP or something, cuz that's all pretty good. I don't have much use for Cornelius remixes...he's one of those musicians that always seems to get it right the first time.

frogbs, Thursday, 25 October 2018 20:18 (five years ago) link

five months pass...

What's your take on the third one? I've got 1 & 2. 2 is fantastic. Is 3 worth tracking down?

afriendlypioneer, Monday, 1 April 2019 14:10 (five years ago) link

Yeah. It's more like 2 than 1 - each track is sort of its own thing. The one with Leo Imai is really nice. I think Takahashi makes an appearance too. There is a bit of repetition here (one track is a little jam off "Helix/Spiral" and I think one is repeated from the other volumes) but it's worth getting if you liked the other two. As always the sound design is impeccable. These sort of small, somewhat gimmicky compositions are really up his alley.

frogbs, Wednesday, 3 April 2019 02:57 (five years ago) link

four years pass...

new one is really nice. in retrospect Mellow Waves feels like a run up to this. its actually kind of funky in spots but overall quite sad. the death of 2 YMO members I think weighs heavy on this. speaking of which it's a bit odd that he decided to re-record "Environmental" since it was just on the Metafive album from last year. I guess it's a much better fit here. anyways the long track "Dream in the Mist" is a real showstopper, could listen to an entire album like that
