Prince’s Estate Might Be Saving Unreleased Music for Reality TV Show

HONOR THE FYRE (sleeve), Tuesday, 2 May 2017 04:16 (six years ago) link

Yeah but music from the late 2000s, so I'm not AS torn up, granted.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 May 2017 04:31 (six years ago) link

Apparently in Minnesota, sometimes it snows in May, now, too. RIP.

just bumped "Computer blue (hallway, extended, whatever version)" three times…is it too much to hope that the Revolution is beginning their shows with this rendition? i'm going to Webster hall tonight with at least one other Ilxor, am stoked as fukk and wonder if anybody's been to any of the shows…

veronica moser, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 21:09 (six years ago) link

I am so fucking envious of you going to that show

I just couldn't do it too broke

gimmesomehawnz (Jon not Jon), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 22:15 (six years ago) link

I booked an international flight, and then right afterwards found out that the Revolution are playing there (Madison) the day after I leave. :(

Meantime...

http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/pop/7784716/prince-estate-purple-rain-concert-film-documentary-streaming-services

In one of his first dealings as an advisor to the Prince estate, Spotify executive Troy Carter is helping negotiate a deal that could give one major streaming service exclusive rights to one of the late pop star’s unreleased concert films as well as rights to make a documentary about the film, sources tell Billboard.

...

On the table is a film of Prince’s Aug. 3, 1983 performance in Minneapolis where he debuted several of the songs released on the soundtrack to his 1984 movie Purple Rain, plus additional footage that a buyer could use to produce a documentary about the making of the film, sources say. The storied show at Minneapolis’s First Avenue nightclub was a surprise gig billed as a benefit for the Minnesota Dance Theatre, with a set list that included “Let’s Go Crazy” and “Purple Rain.”

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 6 May 2017 01:28 (six years ago) link

Even on shitty VHS-to-YouTube that show is pure fire

gimmesomehawnz (Jon not Jon), Saturday, 6 May 2017 01:29 (six years ago) link

was that 83 show the one where he did "a case of you" solo?

Saw Webster H. show, and FCC and our pal said that it was Susannah onstage. Hope I'm not being an asshole when I posit that she looks under 35, not 53.

was gratifying to experience that music from folks who have the perfect right to play it…they did not do the following: "Girls and Boys" "Beautiful Ones" "Dahlin Nikki" "Pop Life" "Let's Pretend We Married" "Private Joy," shit from Dirty Mind other than "Uptown," "It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night"…

veronica moser, Saturday, 6 May 2017 14:19 (six years ago) link

Really know nothing of Prince outtakes at all, but Electric Intercourse and Our Destiny / Roadhouse Garden that are on Spotify are so good.

Thursday August 1- at noon - Liv Warfield, Judith Hill and Shelby J - Love 4 One Another at BAM - Free

Three brilliant female Prince protégés carry on the icon’s legacy for this special live show under the same banner as his Love 4 One Another charity. The trio combines the vocal talents of thrilling stage presence Liv Warfield, previously a member of Prince’s New Power Generation backing band; Oscar and Grammy winner Judith Hill; and powerful songwriter Shelby J. After touring with the likes of Michael Jackson, D’Angelo, Santana, and Stevie Wonder, the women come to MetroTech backed by Warfield’s own band.

The Revolution played SF tonight -- hell of a show. Personal highlight had to be Wendy and Lisa doing "Sometimes It Snows In April" with acoustic guitar, piano and nothing more, to a totally hushed crowd. But Bobby Z, it has to be said, is a total machine.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 July 2017 06:08 (six years ago) link

wow. jealous, Ned!

The show I saw was fantastic as well, but some idiot yelled something out during the aforementioned "April" and it made me nearly homicidal.

Chris L, Wednesday, 12 July 2017 13:32 (six years ago) link

I don't really understand why they have to look for a new buyer when the rights are, apparently, already owned by warner bros?

or at night (Jon not Jon), Friday, 14 July 2017 17:19 (six years ago) link

Like I totally get umg backing out because of the warner factor but why doesn't warner move in and start developing projects

perhaps the people in charge are more interested in money than music

The crazy syncopated hi-hat in the Time's "777-9311," is that Prince "playing" the drum machine pads manually? You couldn't program something that complex back then, could you?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byzlQMpOr4M

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 8 November 2017 20:26 (six years ago) link

Oh snap, posted March 2014:

The Time-777-9311 Was A Stock Drum Beat In Prince's Linn LM-1 ($5,500 drum machine you know it wasn't The Time's)
The beat was programed into the Linn LM1 by David Garibaldi from for Roger Linn. The phone number was Dez's home number and he was very pissed at us all.

Oh snap again, from the comments to the video below:

Actually I asked Jellybean recently....He came to a show I play In in Vegas... He said Dave Garibaldi programmed the Drum Machine and Prince layed down the hi hat part... Believe it or not... He did laugh and tell me he's been playing it live for the last 25 years... Blew me away....

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 8 November 2017 20:29 (six years ago) link

Oh shit. That rings a bells (maybe I heard that once and forgot it), but also shatters some dreams. I feel like I've also heard people say Prince played it in (could you even play the buttons on a Linn in real time, or just sequence?).

xp

change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 November 2017 20:30 (six years ago) link

Oh ok, so both are true! The hi-hat is the real genius part anyway. I still wonder if it was played or programmed.
