the healthcare dude was the only one I've heard where they mostly sat and listened

Adam Curtis too, iirc

International House of Hot Takes (kingfish), Monday, 24 April 2017 19:50 (six years ago) link

have yet to hear that one, I want to actually pay attention so I've held off

a landlocked exclave (mh), Monday, 24 April 2017 20:13 (six years ago) link

i thought Adam Curtis came across as a dreadful tosser in that interview - lots of do you see explaining obvious stuff and not much new insight delivered with a great deal of pomposity? maybe it's just the english cringe on my part. i've got a load of these backed up on my podcast list and am trying to work out whether i just fuck it, and delete them or listen to them. the tone's pretty erratic as people have said.

Fizzles, Monday, 1 May 2017 13:37 (six years ago) link

It was rich listening them make fun of Marc Maron's podcasting tics when 50% of the live show was made up of "Family court...stolen valor...family court"

the harvard bracket ep was fun. i was a little disappointed this joke didn't get made:

No results found for "chappaquiddick trap house".

i've discovered Cum Town and it's better tbqfh

flappy bird, Monday, 1 May 2017 17:14 (six years ago) link

idk those dudes creep me out. i gave it a couple listens and there was like 1 solid laugh to every three uses of "retard" or w/e

goole, Monday, 1 May 2017 17:16 (six years ago) link

it's an acquired taste, cum town

flappy bird, Monday, 1 May 2017 17:16 (six years ago) link

yeah........

like, i sent a close female friend of mine (big bernie fan, loves matt stoller, very committed and constantly furious politically, keeps her eye on NY district court for wall street cases etc) that nymag story about pisspiggranddad in syria, like, "lol isn't this nuts???" and she in all seriousness replied, "i don't want you to ever send me stories about men like this."

so yeah this whole style does have its limits

goole, Monday, 1 May 2017 17:25 (six years ago) link

that makes sense. at its best, Cum Town reminds me of 90s-00s Howard Stern, and the Stern show will always be a non-starter for many, many people.

flappy bird, Monday, 1 May 2017 17:27 (six years ago) link

I don't know if it's just me but I really hate "live show" versions of podcasts.

ryan, Monday, 1 May 2017 17:39 (six years ago) link

There's a live music venue in my neighborhood where acts like Vince Gill and Pat Metheny and a million tribute bands usually play. I looked at the upcoming events recently and nearly every week there's a live show for a podcast scheduled.

duped and used by my worst Miss U (President Keyes), Monday, 1 May 2017 17:47 (six years ago) link

yeah i hate that shit, besides missing the visual element, they're just shallower and not as funny.

flappy bird, Monday, 1 May 2017 17:51 (six years ago) link

lots of podcasts don't seem to get that rapport between 3 people ≠ rapport between 3 people and a packed room watching them. at least the chapo ones don't tend to involve the audience, i had to stop listening to mbmbam live shows bc i got sick of the audience members' constant attempts at being funny/impressing the hosts.

oiocha, Monday, 1 May 2017 18:09 (six years ago) link

virgil texas retweeted me and holy shit it's almost scary how popular they are on twitter, my tweet has almost 1000 likes and 300 retweets

blonde redheads have more fun (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 1 May 2017 18:58 (six years ago) link

they were all really popular on twitter before the show even started. i wasn't aware of them until after the election but some friends of mine knew virgil from several years ago

flappy bird, Monday, 1 May 2017 19:00 (six years ago) link

live podcast shows are fun to go to but not to listen to imo

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 1 May 2017 19:05 (six years ago) link

love my dry boys but all the live show chapo eps are absolutely excruciating – plus the fact that they're so good at ragging on Theranos/Peter Theil et al but seem to have no self-awareness about doing them at Genius HQ is annoying

Jay Elettronica Viva (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 1 May 2017 19:15 (six years ago) link

the thing that bugs me the most is when they devolve into boring & lame nerd/fanboy nonsense (simpsons, kubrick, coen bros) after rightfully ragging on people constantly invoking harry potter and 1984.

flappy bird, Monday, 1 May 2017 19:35 (six years ago) link

the only live show i've heard of theirs is the harvard bracket ep and i thought it was fine!

i like when that guy heckled Will for saying Obama was absolutely useless and horrible

flappy bird, Monday, 1 May 2017 19:37 (six years ago) link

What's hilarious to me is Matt's voice and cadence is exactly like King Buzzo's

Jay Elettronica Viva (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 1 May 2017 19:39 (six years ago) link

btw can someone fill me in on why they're called 'dry boys'

jason waterfalls (gbx), Monday, 1 May 2017 19:44 (six years ago) link

some kind of MRA joke i think

in the chapo canon it's cool to not have sex as long as one is doing so voluntarily

Volcel vs incel, as it were

International House of Hot Takes (kingfish), Monday, 1 May 2017 20:45 (six years ago) link

live podcast shows are fun to go to but not to listen to imo

yeah this seems right (having never done the former, can't imagine I ever actually would tbh)

dry boys don't just not have sex, they keep all of their seed to maintain their essence. i think it's some reddit nofap nonsense

why ruin a good tradition? (Will M.), Monday, 1 May 2017 21:29 (six years ago) link

my favorite use of the -cel thing is this brutal felix tweet from february:

In the Harvard one? I was quite surprised by there being even bigger outrage amongst the audience when the Kennedys were brought up.

Daniel_Rf, Tuesday, 2 May 2017 08:00 (six years ago) link

Here's an interview they did in Boston with a reporter of the Harvard Crimson that the editors decided not to run.

https://medium.com/@matthewjwatson/the-dirtbag-left-at-harvard-an-interview-with-chapo-trap-house-e5fca62780dc

Kid just starts asking them about Neoliberalism and Harvard's place in it, which seem like a good, localized way of drawing in people.

I've purged all of these guys and their fellow travelers from my life and Twitter feed and I'm much happier for it. More power to 'em but I just can't maintain that level of jaundice and make it through the day.

Ive only been listening for a couple weeks but this new ep is trash. Its neither funny nor interesting.

officer sonny bonds, lytton pd (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 19:43 (six years ago) link

you should listen to cum town

flappy bird, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 19:45 (six years ago) link

Or the Katie Halper Show

Bio-Digital Jezza (kingfish), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 22:42 (six years ago) link

the harvard interview is p good, the Shining ep was bad (I did like the live Harvard ep though - much better / more novel gimmick)

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 4 May 2017 01:56 (six years ago) link

in terms of less histrionic Chapo alternatives, Dead Pundits isn't bad, though I find the host a bit irritating. Their recent ep with Angela Nagle was really good and covered some different ground from her Chapo ep.

I'm glad it's not a tricked-out Outline Magazine-style Web 17.0 monstrosity

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 4 May 2017 02:37 (six years ago) link

why would you want a less histrionic Chapo

Jay Elettronica Viva (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 4 May 2017 02:45 (six years ago) link

new premium episode is great, classic drive by of douthat, brooks, and stephens

flappy bird, Thursday, 4 May 2017 05:37 (six years ago) link

Halper good, as is Delete Your Account, but both are more serious bizniz politics than Chapo.

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 4 May 2017 09:02 (six years ago) link

why would you want a less histrionic Chapo

I mean, *I* don'yy, but I can imagine it could grow wearying for some.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 4 May 2017 10:45 (six years ago) link

I'm trying to winnow my political podcasts down, so maybe I can unsub Chapo and just yell "fuck you" every now and then while listening to the Weeds for the same effect

duped and used by my worst Miss U (President Keyes), Thursday, 4 May 2017 12:50 (six years ago) link

new premium ep was their best in a while, also might include the first time they've ever seriously responded to criticism?

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 4 May 2017 12:54 (six years ago) link

A left podcast I've been getting into recently is The Dig with Daniel Denvir. Most recent ep with media critic Adam Johnson is excellent as was the one with Mark Blyth.

It's definitely on the more serious and less dirty end of the dirtbag left.
