i thought Adam Curtis came across as a dreadful tosser in that interview - lots of do you see explaining obvious stuff and not much new insight delivered with a great deal of pomposity? maybe it's just the english cringe on my part. i've got a load of these backed up on my podcast list and am trying to work out whether i just fuck it, and delete them or listen to them. the tone's pretty erratic as people have said.

It was rich listening them make fun of Marc Maron's podcasting tics when 50% of the live show was made up of "Family court...stolen valor...family court"

idk those dudes creep me out. i gave it a couple listens and there was like 1 solid laugh to every three uses of "retard" or w/e

like, i sent a close female friend of mine (big bernie fan, loves matt stoller, very committed and constantly furious politically, keeps her eye on NY district court for wall street cases etc) that nymag story about pisspiggranddad in syria, like, "lol isn't this nuts???" and she in all seriousness replied, "i don't want you to ever send me stories about men like this."

so yeah this whole style does have its limits

that makes sense. at its best, Cum Town reminds me of 90s-00s Howard Stern, and the Stern show will always be a non-starter for many, many people.

I don't know if it's just me but I really hate "live show" versions of podcasts.

There's a live music venue in my neighborhood where acts like Vince Gill and Pat Metheny and a million tribute bands usually play. I looked at the upcoming events recently and nearly every week there's a live show for a podcast scheduled.

yeah i hate that shit, besides missing the visual element, they're just shallower and not as funny.

lots of podcasts don't seem to get that rapport between 3 people ≠ rapport between 3 people and a packed room watching them. at least the chapo ones don't tend to involve the audience, i had to stop listening to mbmbam live shows bc i got sick of the audience members' constant attempts at being funny/impressing the hosts.

they were all really popular on twitter before the show even started. i wasn't aware of them until after the election but some friends of mine knew virgil from several years ago

love my dry boys but all the live show chapo eps are absolutely excruciating – plus the fact that they're so good at ragging on Theranos/Peter Theil et al but seem to have no self-awareness about doing them at Genius HQ is annoying

the thing that bugs me the most is when they devolve into boring & lame nerd/fanboy nonsense (simpsons, kubrick, coen bros) after rightfully ragging on people constantly invoking harry potter and 1984.

In the Harvard one? I was quite surprised by there being even bigger outrage amongst the audience when the Kennedys were brought up.

Kid just starts asking them about Neoliberalism and Harvard's place in it, which seem like a good, localized way of drawing in people.

I've purged all of these guys and their fellow travelers from my life and Twitter feed and I'm much happier for it. More power to 'em but I just can't maintain that level of jaundice and make it through the day.

Ive only been listening for a couple weeks but this new ep is trash. Its neither funny nor interesting.

the harvard interview is p good, the Shining ep was bad (I did like the live Harvard ep though - much better / more novel gimmick)

in terms of less histrionic Chapo alternatives, Dead Pundits isn't bad, though I find the host a bit irritating. Their recent ep with Angela Nagle was really good and covered some different ground from her Chapo ep.

A left podcast I've been getting into recently is The Dig with Daniel Denvir. Most recent ep with media critic Adam Johnson is excellent as was the one with Mark Blyth.

It's definitely on the more serious and less dirty end of the dirtbag left.
