I read somewhere that the ending cutscene is the one that's more than an hour long. The rest are what you'd expect Metal Gear wise.

Mr Raif, Friday, 23 May 2008 17:23 (fifteen years ago) link

The 90 minute cut scene thing has to be an exaggeration / mistake blown out of proportion thanks to the internet. If not - WOW! Maybe they meant that like in the last game you can unlock and watch the cut scenes after beating the game in several 90 minute chunks or something?

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 23 May 2008 17:42 (fifteen years ago) link

I truly wouldn't be surprised if it were 90 minutes including radio sequences. The end of MGS2 was like an hour with about 1 minute of play, maybe.

jeff, Friday, 30 May 2008 22:36 (fifteen years ago) link

I hear it requires 4.6Gb of your hard drive space too? That's a pretty meaty chunk for anyone who only has 20Gb to start with.

JimD, Sunday, 1 June 2008 13:39 (fifteen years ago) link

that's one reason I can't play new videogames ... they're waaayyyyyyyy too involved now. It's like you have to dedicate your life to these things. Just let me jump in and kill some shit while I'm waiting for my Boboli pizza to cook.

burt_stanton, Sunday, 1 June 2008 16:02 (fifteen years ago) link

JimD - a lot of ps3 games require installs of about that size (about one-third to half of them?). I guess it's mainly to speed up loading because the blu-ray drive spins pretty slow. It is sort of a problem. I have a sixty gig drive and this will be the fifth or sixth game I've had to install on there - eventually I'll have to start deleting installs to play a new game - which is a drag because then if you want to play an old game again you're going to have to wait 20-30 minutes to re-install it. On the other hand, you can use any hard drive with your ps3 - so if it really bugs, you can always go buy a new 500 gig or whatever harddrive and never have to worry about space again (just like with any home computer).

Burt - there are plenty of just jump in and kill things games out new today too - c'mon. There has always been long involved video games (well, since the late 1980s) and shorter experience too.

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 1 June 2008 17:02 (fifteen years ago) link

Anyway, I'm glad I'm heading out of town for a while and am not sitting around here getting over-hyped for this game like I did with GTA IV. And I'll have something to look forward to returning home - finally getting to play this thing (and getting to watch those 90 minute cut scenes, I guess)

Uh oh, the Gekkou have started to move!

The new controls are taking a bit of getting used to but this is incredible.

Mr Raif, Thursday, 12 June 2008 12:03 (fifteen years ago) link

So excited about this. Tonight!

Matt D, Thursday, 12 June 2008 17:00 (fifteen years ago) link

Have finished the first section. So much of the game is cut-scenes, it's sort of more of a tv mini-series than a game, but the cut-scenes are usually pretty impressive. So far I don't mind that over half the time I'm playing I don't need to even hold the controller, but I do hear that the second half of the game becomes even more cut-scene heavy, which I guess does worry me a bit... mostly because I do like the actual game play so far. Sneaking works pretty good - shooting is fine & switching in and out of first person works well. The graphics are really nice.

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 15 June 2008 16:27 (fifteen years ago) link

lovin this so far. i can't tell if hideo kojima is the most brilliant man alive or just insane and drunk on his own power.

one of the mgs4 reviews i read said he has collected every pokemon in every pokemon game.

what?! i'm no hater of story and cut-scenes in games, but that's inexcusable.

latebloomer, Sunday, 15 June 2008 20:34 (fifteen years ago) link

There is no doubt it's an incredible game but even the most die hard MGS fan would have to admit some of the cutscenes are a bit much. I've never minded the cutscenes in Metal Gear games but if you're going to have long cutscenes then the balance with the gameplay needs to be right.

The opening was incredible, Otacon got mad at me for trying to take on the Gekko, lol. I did the hold up and crotch grab on one of the super female soldiers then she CQC'd my ass. The little Snatcher bot is awesome.

Mr Raif, Sunday, 15 June 2008 21:46 (fifteen years ago) link

Tracer Hand, Monday, 16 June 2008 16:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Somebody tried sharing a load of MGS4 spoilers with me today, but I'm so unaware of the backstory that none of them even made sense to me.

JimD, Monday, 16 June 2008 18:08 (fifteen years ago) link

just beat this.
wowee that ending was long. good though.

Creeztophair, Thursday, 19 June 2008 03:32 (fifteen years ago) link

i spoiled the ending for myself, since there's no way i''ll get a chance to play this anytime soon.

liked the ending, it wraps everything up pretty nicely. in a metal gear sorta way.

latebloomer, Thursday, 19 June 2008 19:38 (fifteen years ago) link

i really want to play the game now.

Was the last cut scene really 90 minutes??

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 19 June 2008 19:53 (fifteen years ago) link

people used to complain that the endings of video games were too short. now they be complaining shit is too long. god.

cutty, Thursday, 19 June 2008 20:23 (fifteen years ago) link

a film length CONCLUDING cut scene strikes me as a bit excessive

but what do i know maybe its totes worth it

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 19 June 2008 20:24 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, it was about 90 minutes. but really good.
i'd rather have a really long cutscene ending than "YOU WON, NOW PLAY AGAIN" or whatever.

Creeztophair, Thursday, 19 June 2008 21:16 (fifteen years ago) link

getting to watch a cool movie as a reward doesn't seem entirely that bad of an idea to me, as long as there's no big surprise ha-ha-you-wanted-to-get-up-to-eat-or-pee-or-something and now you have to sit there for a number of seconds possibly in the four digits and your pause button has ceased to work

El Tomboto, Thursday, 19 June 2008 21:20 (fifteen years ago) link

you can pause durring all cutscenes. also, if you get bored you can zoom in and out to make it look like snake is on mtv.

Creeztophair, Thursday, 19 June 2008 21:48 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm about 9 hours into the "game" so far. Really surprised by how much of that has been looong cut-scenes and just how little gameplay there has been. The cut scenes are indeed some of the best I've ever seen, but it's just not right to turn on a game ready to play and instead end up watching fifty minutes of movies just to get to ten or twenty minutes of gameplay, then hit another huge endless wall of movie.

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 22 June 2008 07:50 (fifteen years ago) link

My guess would be that of the 9 hours of playing the so called game, there has been three hours max of gameplay

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 22 June 2008 07:53 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't want to go into details in fear of spoilers for some people I know who read this board, but, wow, possibly best wrap-up ending for the series and the character of Solid Snake possible, really exceeded my expectations.

Matt D, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 16:33 (fifteen years ago) link

one of the producers said there will be a mgs5. most likely starring big boss again.

Will M., Monday, 30 June 2008 14:58 (fifteen years ago) link

you know i really like this game but sometimes, like right now, i feel like i cannot watch any more cutscene. god. there is a cutscene on right now. i have already gone to the bathroom, gotten something to eat, eaten it, gotten caught up on this thread, and drebin is still running his fucking mouth.

adam, Monday, 7 July 2008 20:18 (fifteen years ago) link

I am in Act 2 now (Matt D lent me his PS3 which is awes, I can play the one or two games and not think about PS3 again until 2018 when FFXIII comes out). Not sure how I feel about the game so far. I really miss the MGS1/2 puzzley corridor-filled gameplay vs. this new camouflage-y openish area stuff. Plus the cutscenes my god. Normally I am the least angry peson about cutscenes, but the thing that's really really killing me is CODECS WHERE IT DOESN'T EVEN SHOW A DUDE'S FACE ie. the 10-minute codec speech from Drebin. Seriously I know people were mad because the other games didn't explain enough but it feels like this one is trying to explain too much. Show me your crazy, kojima, don't just write me a book and get a voice actor to read it.

three months pass...

Tonight I realized I only ever played the online portion of this once (after getting very frustrated just with the rings you had to set up an account), so anyway, I thought I should give it a second chance. Put it in for about an hour - played some deathmatch, team deathmatch and a sneaking game. Unfortunately, first impressions remained accurate. MGO is terrible! Probably the worst multiplayer game I've ever tried. How could one create a shooting game, where the shooting is so awful is something I'll never understand.
