Passwords. Generally. Fuck.

^ co-sign.

My fucking newspaper channeled all its customer service through the web. My account had nothing to do with money or personal info, yet for access to such mundane services as reporting a lost paper or stopping delivery while on vacation, they required a password of 8 characters or more, with both upper and lower case letters, a numeric character, and "one or more of these special characters". This reeked of some new graduate with an IT degree, zero real world experience, and a boss who had no clue what this kid's job was.

We use Bitlocker at mine before we even get to the main login screen. It saves your invalids over time and eventually you are locked out. And you have to get this long 32 character lockout code to get back in from IT. and the invalid attempts don't reset.

So i called IT to ask them to reset ny invalid attempts to zero once cos i was sick of having to go through that every time i fat fingered one time and dude was like "yeah we can't do that we should probably figure that out cos lotsa people seem to be pissed about this".

Called a week later and got someone else who said "i dunno wtf that agent was talking about. We reset those counts all the time" and finally put me back to zero.

do you mean in a row, or if you get it wrong and then right, it keeps track of the wrong ones in a tally

the thing that really fucks me off is password policies with stupid requirements (at least one upper-case letter, at least one lower-case letter, at least one number, at least one symbol, minimum 8 characters). so of course people write down their inscrutable passwords on post-it notes and your intricate policy is fucking meaningless.

fucking pop records (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 21 April 2017 01:24 (seven years ago) link

My friend designed a software that's online which allows you to store your password in a database which is highly encrypted. I'm still too stupid to use something that logical

I was going to say, most of my passwords are on iOS/macOS and saved unless it's something I have to log into from work. it auto-generates strong passwords and makes them accessible across all my devices as long as I'm logged into my computer

otoh my annoyance is with the tv network apps that work with the appletv magic but make me re-login to my tv provider, then do so with an embedded browser view that doesn't do the aurocomplete

My (current) gripe is with Chase iOS app, which keeps locking me out for too many failed log-in attempts despite having made 0 previous attempts.

Which, fine, maybe somebody somewhere else is trying to use my user name. But then the reset process is really easy to fuck up, so I get locked out even FURTHER and have to call customer service.

Even worse when they don't tell you the requirements, just let you keep typing in passwords you want to use while telling you they're too weak and invalid

Mince Pramthwart (James Morrison), Friday, 21 April 2017 03:20 (seven years ago) link

yeah, and those times when they let you do it once, then afterwards it gives you tiny red text telling you what the stupid requirements are.

thing is we'd all be better off (and more secure) with big clear meaningful passwords like turnbullisaweakbastard than with some random dumb shit like ma!colm1

fucking pop records (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 21 April 2017 04:30 (seven years ago) link

at work sometimes there are syncing issues w/ the master password program and the system. can't tell you how many times I reset my password three times in a day cos of that shit.

Neanderthal, Friday, 21 April 2017 17:25 (seven years ago) link

my uni had different passwords for email, blackboard, library, student services, alumni. every few weeks some of them demanded new passwords, and it was never clear (or even consistent) how many other passwords would change. the whole shebang was so disorganised and horrible that i just stopped using some things altogether.

fucking pop records (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 21 April 2017 22:18 (seven years ago) link

Password expires every three months but starts reminding you of this every day a month before it does...

Elsewhere, I've updated Google Android keyboard and the new one seems dumber at autocorrect.

Have also updated the casual game that I've been playing every day for two years now and where I've amassed 500+ of the unlockable characters only for the new version to say that it's not compatible with my device, but only after the update and with no way to de-update.

Special mentions for both the Twitter app and the Flickr app updates for also doing what I want them to do less well than they did.

(Flickr app now interleaves photos from groups in with the photos from friends. The groups are very noisy with 1 pic in 10 being interesting thus shitting up my home screen. Twitter app doesn't show your own posts by default any more and switching between accounts is convoluted so checking on my Bots is now 4 times the work)

people who are close to the stage at small club shows that reach their hands in the vicinity of the guitar player's guitar and do the "meedly meedly" air guitar thing right in their face. I am fine w/ air guitar (I do it at shows) but doing it in the player's face seems a bit distracting, tho obv they're professional and know to tune that out

NOBODY CARES WHAT BANDS YOU SAW AND THE ONE BAND YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE, FACEBOOK PEOPLE

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 26 April 2017 23:27 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, seriously, shut the fuck up, Facebook.

Speaking of which, I have a friend who constantly compares bands to weirdly specific but totally not helpful other acts. Like "have you heard the new album by (x)? It's kind of like early Don McLean." Or, like, "it's got a real Tuxedo Moon thing going on." Stuff like that. It's endearing, but the IA side of me hates it.

Don't do it, this 10 concert thing is the lamest thing ever. Like, who the fuck cares which concert you didn't go to? There are entire concerts I can't remember seeing. Apparently one week I saw both DMX and John Cale, and I can't remember a minute of either.

In 2017 fire alarms still do that chirping thing when the battery is low. But it stops when the battery is taken out. I'm probably missing something but witaf

virginity simple (darraghmac), Thursday, 27 April 2017 00:45 (seven years ago) link

one of ours is plugged into the mains so it only goes off in extreme circumstances, e.g. a fire emergency, using a frying pan for 12 seconds

I smashed one up with a broom handle in an early morning reverse rumplestiltskin rage in front of the incumbent ms Mac in my younger days, nowadays I'm wiser and just keep spare batteries in the house

so they chirp when the battery's dead but not when the battery's removed, and they're plugged into the mains? i'm guessing it's the same engineer who decided printers should stop printing black text when the cyan cartridge is empty

the "ten concerts" facebook thing is great, it's probably something a bunch of editors are trying to spool into a story but failing because it's just personal experiences and how people frame them organically circulated. people who met each other recently are talking about being at the same show in 1999 and crap like that. it's the casual interaction facebook and other sites have failed to capture, and it crossses boundaries between ilm obsessive list people and people who casually went to some shows

like wow I can't wait for this to die down so I can see more content from my favorite brands and some posts explaining why Trump is breaking the law

a landlocked exclave (mh), Thursday, 27 April 2017 01:19 (seven years ago) link

I havent seen anything like that. Ive seen a bunch of people just making random guesses until they hit the right one by elimination, and a bunch of olds whining that theyve never heard of any of these damn bands.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 27 April 2017 01:36 (seven years ago) link

wow that sucks

I've been cracking up because a couple people discovered they were at the same Dave Matthews Band concert in '99 and had a horrible time

another person got called out for actually having gone to see Coldplay, and they admitted a friend gave them and their fiance tickets. said friend was apparently very irritated when they got shitfaced and just made out through the whole show

lots of stupid, funny stories

a landlocked exclave (mh), Thursday, 27 April 2017 01:44 (seven years ago) link

haha I am pretty sure I was at a dave matthews concert in 1999 and had a horrible time

marcos, Thursday, 27 April 2017 01:48 (seven years ago) link

the best part is I was not at that concert, but I remember it happening!

there were a couple harmless but kind of irritating people in my photography class (I was a senior in high school) recounting it, and I can still remember one of them saying "...and we got up close on the side of the stage, and we were all like 'Daaaaave! Daaaaave!'" ... and that was the entire story

it was a cross between the proto-jam band types from one high school and some preppy kids who somehow went to our magnet school for photography despite their home high school being catholic who went to the DMB show

I believe I looked up the woman who said that a couple years ago on facebook and she was a yoga instructor or essential oils specialist
