That Calibre rework is amazing. I love the 170 underpinning the slow waltz feel.

Yo viborg, yeah I getcha and I'm not really that connected with "straight" d'n'b either - although over in Aus I don't perhaps get the same douchebaggery (but then I'm too old to go clubbing much either).Definitely also enjoying the junglist stuff more these days, but I like to dip my toe in to see what's happening in (what I think of as) the more mainstream stuff I guess.
> (I could mostly say the same the same of techno at this point tbh.)For sure.

Another great tune from Sully '5ives', not what I'd call straight d'n'b:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5eBw_HlzMM
― MikoMcha, Sunday, 26 December 2021 15:43 (two years ago) link
I follow ‘straight’ drum & bass pretty closely and can highly recommend having a listen to what Imanu and Buunshin have been up to this year if you want to hear the current cutting edge. Buunshin afaik is still studying sonology at the Royal Conservertoire in The Hague and has access to some pretty mental sound design kit as a result, and the two of them are young proteges of Noisia. Probably not your cup of tea if you just want ‘authentic’ breaks chopped in an S1000, a tired pad sample and a sine wave sub though.
― Agnes, Agatha, Germaine and Jack (Willl), Sunday, 26 December 2021 16:06 (two years ago) link
Re: the blanket statement of ‘attracting douchebags’ - the MC led nights where there are 3 DJs on the bill and 50 MC’s are far, far worse for this. Symmetry / Headz / 1985 nights in somewhere like Trinity in Bristol are on the whole a pretty good crowd in comparison.
― Agnes, Agatha, Germaine and Jack (Willl), Sunday, 26 December 2021 16:11 (two years ago) link
Lol no one said anything about 'authentic' breaks, and I don't think anyone of note is using an S1000 any more. If you're concerned with the standard shape of basslines in electronic music, why not just listen to Floating Points, maybe some actual jazz, or whatever the current version of IDM is? Although trad IDM leaned pretty heavily on sine waves too iirc.
― recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Monday, 27 December 2021 16:42 (two years ago) link
The fact is that there aren't a lot of producers making jungle now and they are mainly hewing to that classic sound so there isn't a lot of experimentation going on that I've heard. More experimentation in some of the jungle/garage crossover productions but that's also solely melange as experimentation.
MikoMcha that's a solid release from Sully. I like the b-side a little better.
I guess this would qualify as "tired pad samples"?

― recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Monday, 27 December 2021 16:52 (two years ago) link
Ok one last post: this thread seems acceptable as the rolling jungle etc thread going forward, shall I petition the powers that be to change the title to "2017 AND BEYOND"? Any suggested revisions or alternatives? Is neurofunk a separate genre from drum & bass at all? I thought it was just one of many styles that emerged 1996-2002.
― recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Monday, 27 December 2021 16:54 (two years ago) link
Yep that kind of pad sound was pretty much what I had in mind when I referred to ‘tired pad samples’. Tim Reaper / Sully / Fracture are awesome and imo bring something new using the classic hardcore continuum collection of samples. Some of the other ‘new’ jungle I have come across on Bandcamp is quite depressing in its half-assed throwing together of already caned into the ground samples / breaks / tropes. Kind of retromania at its worst and spectacularly lazy.
― Agnes, Agatha, Germaine and Jack (Willl), Monday, 27 December 2021 17:15 (two years ago) link
Agreed, I should have clarified that I meant there aren't a lot of producers making GOOD jungle right now. Haven't heard much from Fracture at ~160 bpm tho? I do like almost everything I've heard from him.
― recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Monday, 27 December 2021 17:39 (two years ago) link
His 'Velocity EP' on 1985 is worth a listen along with virtually everything he puts out on his Astrophonica label.
― Agnes, Agatha, Germaine and Jack (Willl), Monday, 27 December 2021 18:13 (two years ago) link
Been thinking about starting a new rolling hardcore continuum thread. But for now what’s foremost in my mind and relevant is that in the past week I’ve seen two out of my all-time top 20 d&b producers posting dumb reactionary hot takes. Ffs.

No it was Dom (of & Roland fame) straight up stanning for Jordan Peterson, granted rating him in the 20 is being pretty generous. But also dBridge but that was a bit more vague, just seemingly taking a stand for the Canadian clown caravan. Photek too? Ugh.

That's a shame about Photek. Never cared that much for Dom and Roland though.
Thanks for that Blu Mar Ten link above.
I'm liking a lot of the retro stuff that's about - Tim Reaper and Co, Rupture Records, even stuff on Omni who are hit and miss but seem to release 4 or 5 EPs every month. Even enjoying some of the Tik-toky pop jungle from Nia Archives and Pink Panthress.
If you want straight face melting bangers, Grid Recordings still putting out some fun stuff which I guess would be classed as jump up but done in a non-obvious anti-anthemic kind of way. Check out Yatuza, Muzo, Nick the Lot for example
Also good recently: Sl8r - Temptation, Need for Mirrors - Dozy, Blocks and Escher - This One (On R&S). Also liking Myth, Fluidity, Fanu and the always reliable Break.
I go to Junodownload new releases every Monday and it's 95% shite but dnb still produces a few gems so I can't let it go as a genre

Anyway Don I was gonna say ‘Dozy’ is tremendous! I was under the impression Need for Mirrors was just another stadium d&b act. I should pay more attention to R&S records also…I checked out Omni Music, like you said it’s a low signal to noise ratio there.
