They know their demo.

Still haven't figured out the demo of guys like me importing Swedish snus. Hopefully its less embarrassing than the modern snuff enthusiast.

everything we do is like Tide Pods. Everyone in this generation is semi-ironically, like, We’re ready to die.

I’m gonna start juuling

it’s going to be as awkward as when I opened my friend’s front door to greet trick-or-treaters and a large group of middle school students were there and I exclaimed “wow you’ve got a whole squad out here”

and they giggled and went “haha squad”

mh, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 00:20 (five years ago) link

geezers be juulin for a minute, no shame bae

calstars, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 01:00 (five years ago) link

Incredible that the Reefer Madness approach is still being taken in 2018

“We are seeing the vaping and the ‘Juuling’ across the board,” a substance-abuse counsellor in Arlington, Virginia, told a local radio station, surmising that vapes might contain “cocaine liquid.” (It is possible, though difficult, to crack open a Juul pod and fill it with your own liquid. This would be a complicated and perhaps unprecedented way to do cocaine.) An assistant principal in North Dakota warned the Grand Forks Herald about the dangers of e-cigarette liquid, which he had inadvertently touched after confiscating a bottle that he found in a student’s backpack. Soon afterward, he began to feel nauseated and “real emotional,” he said.

You know what will get teenagers to not Juul? Telling them it's a pipeline to exciting hard drugs and getting super high.

i love the juul but I'm seemingly allergic and can only vape the mango and, to a lesser extent, mint flavours without coughing up a lung. as in with the tobacco flavoured one i cannot even get enough into my lungs to exhale any visible vapour without having a coughing fit like i just greened out smoking a gravity bong. oh well i would've gotten way more addicted than I've ever been to cigarettes, which I've hardly been smoking lately as I've cut down on booze massively

I dgaf about vape life, but I've had a Juul now for three weeks and haven't had or even wanted an actual cigarette in that whole time. I smoked all day every day for 26 years, so this thing has changed my life.

Hopefully I can wean myself off it by working down to 0% nicotine pods, but I'm setting that goal for six months out.

Anyway, yeah, Juul is rad if you're trying to kick cigarettes.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 16 December 2018 04:13 (five years ago) link

Also, the cucumber flavor suuuucks, but now I'm stuck with three more pods of it.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 16 December 2018 04:15 (five years ago) link

I think a neighbour downstairs vapes and it wafts through the floor somehow and is utterly revolting. Ban this filth.

Can someone recommend a device that doesn't crap out within 3-4 months? The advantages of vaping as a way to maintain and not smoke are diminished by what is probably planned obsolesce but it'd be nice to not have to buy so many vessels until I can taper off of nicotine forever

Groove(box) Denied (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 8 January 2019 15:23 (five years ago) link

I use an atlantis evo tank + eleaf istick. They've both held up for a couple of years w/ the usual minor maintenance.

woof, Tuesday, 8 January 2019 15:42 (five years ago) link

im on that juul shit for the time being and since you end up throwing so much of it in the garbage all the time it's probably fairly fail-proof? idk it's been 2 weeks

suggest boban (Will M.), Tuesday, 8 January 2019 15:54 (five years ago) link

slightly less wasteful way of using the juul: after they're finished you can pop open the pods and fill them with nicotine salts vape juice. can use a pod like maybe 3 or 4 times that way (also nic salts are cheaper than pods per volume). obviously fucking around with those things is probably not hugely advisable but seems fine

i got a lightly used pax (think it's the original pax not 2 or 3) from my gf's lil bro's partner because they stopped smoking weed a couple years ago and it was just lying around their apartment. it's great, and according to the receipt would've cost me > $200 canadian to be new so I'm pretty stoked

i also stopped vaping nicotine because i became a much bigger nicotine fiend than i ever was. back on the "few cigarettes when out drinking" bandwagon and feeling better for it tbh.

Another death in Illinois, the fourth. It's very unclear by the way it's been reported, but listening to the two-part "Daily" podcast a couple of weeks ago, this is apparently by no means limited to bootleg THC carts or vitamin E oil or whatever. There's seemingly something else going on here.

nah

-_- (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 14 November 2019 21:55 (four years ago) link

Honest question, why do you say that? The last I saw apparently 80% of illnesses were in people who had used THC products, but there are people who have died who reportedly did not use any THC products. Like the Nebraska guy in the Daily podcast. So what do you think is doing it?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 14 November 2019 22:06 (four years ago) link

based on everything I've heard there is a very strong correlation but yeah I don't think it's the full story either

frogbs, Thursday, 14 November 2019 22:15 (four years ago) link

It appears to be less of an issue in Europe.

pomenitul, Thursday, 14 November 2019 22:20 (four years ago) link

Honest question, why do you say that?

i guess i should make the proviso: regulation of things you can consume in the US is shockingly awful so there is a non-zero-chance that non-black-market vaping products there may have caused severe physical harm and/or death.

but i have yet to read a report which specified that someone suddenly got ill and died from using a regulated vaping product

-_- (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 14 November 2019 22:20 (four years ago) link

There's a reason I wrote "It's very unclear by the way it's been reported." There are a lot of reports that do not paint a clear picture. Apparently many/most illnesses and deaths have been linked to vaping THC, but it's not at all clear what percentage of those illnesses or deaths were linked to bootleg THC products. (One presumes a lot.) Yet at the same time, there are reportedly people who have died or gotten sick from legit products as well, as well as people who didn't use THC products at all. The "Daily" podcast I heard was about the first vaping related death in Nebraska, who was an older guy (65+?) who spent a lifetime smoking cigarettes, then changed to nicotine vaping, and, they suspect, he died from that. They talk to his daughter, and she said there is no way this guy was buying back-alley carts or whatever.

I mean, there have been illnesses in Canada as well. And even then, in the article I read about the first reported illness there, you come across shit like this: "While health officials are aware of the brand of vape being used and whether or not the person was vaping a nicotine or cannabis product, they did not wish to disclose it publicly." Like, why not? Why not make it public? Or at least confirm whether or not it was a bootleg product, or even THC vs. nicotine? I have yet to see a single article that said all the illnesses or deaths were exclusively related to bootleg products, or THC products, so if it's not just bootleg products or THC, what's the deal? Why not clear it up for users and consumers?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 14 November 2019 22:37 (four years ago) link

Like, I just read the story from yesterday about the Michigan teen who go a double lung transplant after vaping related illness, but the article concluded "Health officials declined to release the teen’s name and said he is expected to recover. They also did not specify what the teen vaped or how long he vaped." I understand the first half, not releasing the teen's name, but if they're serious about preventing more deaths and illnesses, why not say what he vaped or how long? Or even say if it was a legit product or not?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 14 November 2019 22:40 (four years ago) link

there’s a difference between knowing what someone who got sick was using and knowing that what they were using caused them to get sick.

any info that is released will influence the behavior of the general public and may have unintended consequences.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 14 November 2019 22:42 (four years ago) link

i feel like the mystery is partly because public health officials are happy for it to seem that vaping tout court is dangerous

-_- (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 14 November 2019 22:49 (four years ago) link

yeah there is definitely an erring on the side of caution aspect to it.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 14 November 2019 22:52 (four years ago) link

But there's dangerous, and then there's potentially acutely dangerous/lethal. Smoking is not good for you, especially cumulatively, but I don't think there has ever been an otherwise healthy teen that died from smoking.

I'm just saying that if *all* people are getting sick from bootleg THC carts, then say that. If other products are getting people sick, too, then say that. If they truly have no idea, then say that. Because being vague or secretive has its own unintended consequences, not least the implication that you're safe simply avoiding bootleg THC carts, which may or may not be the case.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 14 November 2019 22:54 (four years ago) link

For example, I've seen a lot of comments from people on various forums who react to these illnesses or deaths with the same confident, blasé "nah" as Jim in Vancouver initially did, but I don't think anyone is in any position to be that confident, which does not instill ... confidence in how these stories are being reported or how the information is getting to the public. Keep things vague and people will start to come to their own conclusions.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 14 November 2019 22:57 (four years ago) link

we know, with a good degree of confidence, that out of millions of people in the US who vape every day, < 3000 have gotten seriously ill, with the vast majority of those being people using black market carts

-_- (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 14 November 2019 23:06 (four years ago) link

or that should be, "with at least the vast majority".

-_- (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 14 November 2019 23:07 (four years ago) link

I understand the odds seem to be low, but you're OK with accepting a certain number of deaths or illnesses from a product?
