I think the guests are often more interesting than they are. They had this Irish woman on once who was making a lot of incisive points about the psychology of the alt right and they kept interrupting her to make cracks about how alt right guys live in their parents' basements

yeah, i remember that interview, i definitely wanted more of her and considerably less of them

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 13 April 2017 16:36 (seven years ago) link

i do appreciate angry matt rants, and think he's probably the "smartest"/has the most interesting commentary

a friend of mine (a very smart and funny guy himself!) thinks felix is hilarious, which i just do not understand, his schtick is rote and predictable, he has literally one joke and he tells it over and over again

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 13 April 2017 16:38 (seven years ago) link

wait, i'm doubting myself now - felix is the videogame enthusiast right?

xpost Agreed re: Matt's commentary. I really liked his thing a few episodes back about how for years fiction/popular culture/analysis prepared us for Trump but not what comes after.

Nerdstrom Poindexter, Thursday, 13 April 2017 16:46 (seven years ago) link

i think Felix is hilarious, he's definitely the quickest. there's a classic radio chemistry between the three (and Virgil & Amber), it really does feel like lightning in a bottle, like the Stern show.

as far as their 'everything is terrible' schtick, well, it's no different than any other show or podcast about politics these days, whether it's late night talk shows, cable news, or other podcasts...

flappy bird, Thursday, 13 April 2017 16:51 (seven years ago) link

Felix has three go-to jokes and they're getting pretty old now. Eminem/Metal Gear/Stolen Valor, we get it.

Amber and Matt are my favorites, they don't have as much of a schtick.

flappy bird, Thursday, 13 April 2017 17:35 (seven years ago) link

all their Trump impressions are terrible but i lost it at the bit about Trump wanting to bomb Berlin, "but to kill Oscar Schindler," and then Felix: "so what do we know about the girl in the red dress?"

flappy bird, Thursday, 13 April 2017 17:37 (seven years ago) link

Is anyone listening to the Bernie Sanders Podcast?

Does he do a Gorka impression?

i wonder if the whole 'laughing at dads in family court' thing is kind of misguided and not a good look idk

― global tetrahedron, Tuesday, February 14, 2017 11:28 PM (one month ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

no one ever cleared this up for global in this thread and that's totally hilarious to me. I think about it every time they make a family court joke

SSN Lucci (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 13 April 2017 18:47 (seven years ago) link

he has literally one joke and he tells it over and over again

tbf he has five jokes he tells over and over again: family court, valor stealing, metal gear, beltway pundit, diarrhea

i know that Chapo is in many ways closely kin to Gawker (pareene guesting, Felix writes for deadspin, etc) but the other day on twitter max or adrian said that 'if gawker were founded today it would have to be a leftist shock jock comedy podcast' and i just wanted to tearfully slap 'em in the face screaming YOU TAKE THAT BACK

flopson, Thursday, 13 April 2017 21:13 (seven years ago) link

The only reason Chapo is as popular as it is is because it's filling a snark void since Peter Thiel decided Gawker shouldn't exist anymore.

SSN Lucci (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 13 April 2017 21:43 (seven years ago) link

and that's no shots at Chapo, but I certainly valued having one media presence that wasn't just lying to me and scamming me all day in the age of sites like Vice that are basically long cons on advertisers

SSN Lucci (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 13 April 2017 21:46 (seven years ago) link

and that's why i moved to Reddit Island

SSN Lucci (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 13 April 2017 21:46 (seven years ago) link

They're doing a sold-out fundrazor for the Boston DSA tonight at Harvard, aren't they?

the Snark deficit is real

flopson, Friday, 14 April 2017 01:40 (seven years ago) link

^^^this is a good one

also felix is actually pretty funny in it

jason waterfalls (gbx), Tuesday, 18 April 2017 16:40 (seven years ago) link

i listened to (most of) the Pareene ep. They laugh a little too much at themselves, but it worked for Paul Lynde.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 18 April 2017 16:47 (seven years ago) link

i also completely forgot who Gorka was; too many characters to keep track of in this admin, needs streamlining.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 18 April 2017 16:49 (seven years ago) link

i haven't heard about Gorka in any other context besides Chapo.

i wasn't into it at first but now im fully immersed. honestly all of the radio shows/podcasts i listen to i hated at first, chapo included

The real Gorka phone call is worth hearing for reference, Adomian builds off of it really well and it's not exaggerated that much in places surprisingly.

The most recent premium where they take apart West Wing is top form.

West Wing takedowns are a dime a dozen. Keep it behind the paywall fellas.

duped and used by my worst Miss U (President Keyes), Thursday, 20 April 2017 14:04 (six years ago) link

IDK I have seen criticism of Sorkin's hackneyed writing but I haven't heard such a thorough analysis of the show as a theory of modern liberalism and predictor of the Obama administration.

yeah, someone was complaining that they bitch about the west wing in every episode, but they haven't dedicated 70 minutes to it yet. great episode. new cum town up too

flappy bird, Thursday, 20 April 2017 16:46 (six years ago) link

eternal sunshining West Wing out of the mind of the Dem electorate wd give us a fighting chance

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 20 April 2017 16:48 (six years ago) link

people would leave the clinic and say "Damn, what a horrible shitbag Joe Biden is."

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 20 April 2017 16:50 (six years ago) link

I dunno Dem staffers have 4 years to brush up on Gilbert and Sullivan lyrics

duped and used by my worst Miss U (President Keyes), Thursday, 20 April 2017 16:51 (six years ago) link

Lol ok so you never watched the show? I didn't either - Sorkin is a god awful writer who thinks you're an utter moron - but those analogies are like saying that unicorns and pegasi, despite being fictional, are a lot like horses, which are real

Sorry I just agree with prez keyes. If you subscribe to listen to some dudes talk for over an hour about how the west wing is like the Obama admin I have a town you should move to where that service is included with the rent

El Tomboto, Thursday, 20 April 2017 16:56 (six years ago) link

west wing is like the second most popular popular culture reference for centrists on the internet after harry potter. it's a noxious influence.

-_- (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 20 April 2017 17:05 (six years ago) link

Brendan was otm about Sorkin's irritating dependence on repetition.

flappy bird, Thursday, 20 April 2017 17:07 (six years ago) link

Can't wait to hear Chapo tear into the David Palmer administration too

duped and used by my worst Miss U (President Keyes), Thursday, 20 April 2017 17:08 (six years ago) link

sorkin's zingier dialogue always feels like the one liners people think of as comebacks an hour after the fact

nomar, Thursday, 20 April 2017 17:11 (six years ago) link

a theory of modern liberalism and predictor of the Obama administration.

So glad Brooklyn has been able to produce a radio hour in which the first black president's career can be revealed to have been secretly predicted by a shit network tv show

El Tomboto, Thursday, 20 April 2017 17:14 (six years ago) link

well, it "predicted" Obama in that the Jimmy Smits character in the later seasons was based on Obama

duped and used by my worst Miss U (President Keyes), Thursday, 20 April 2017 17:18 (six years ago) link

did they actually compare it to the Obama admin as a drawn out thing or just clown Sorkin? I'm down for the latter, the former does sound dumb

a landlocked exclave (mh 😏), Thursday, 20 April 2017 17:21 (six years ago) link

imo the trying to reason with republicans who were blockading was very West Wing-esque

apparently Obama recently mentioned about how if he knew they genuinely had no interest in doing work he'd have pitched full-blown single payer instead of a bill that was basically an olive branch

a landlocked exclave (mh 😏), Thursday, 20 April 2017 17:22 (six years ago) link

"we will do everything in our power to make sure you get no second term, including not doing our jobs"

"hey guys, here's the heritage foundation's healthcare bill, are we friends now?"
