Yeah it is

Carlotta's Portrait (Ross), Thursday, 6 April 2017 21:01 (seven years ago) link

i thought it was his darkest standup yet (last thing he did was Horace & Pete) but very good.... just hope he's ok!

flopson, Thursday, 6 April 2017 21:04 (seven years ago) link

it is v dark but not uncharacteristically so imo

sweet to see it dedicated to Garry Shandling at the end

Οὖτις, Thursday, 6 April 2017 21:08 (seven years ago) link

he definitely frontloads it with the darkest stuff

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 6 April 2017 21:17 (seven years ago) link

the email chunk is still p funny

I also laughed a lot @ the magic mike > boyfriend stuff

johnny crunch, Friday, 7 April 2017 12:57 (seven years ago) link

i really enjoyed the stuff about heaven

the goat joke on SNL lol wtf

k3vin k., Sunday, 9 April 2017 04:21 (seven years ago) link

That whole monologue was great. "I know you can hear in my voice that I'm white..."

Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr, and Violent J (誤訳侮辱), Sunday, 9 April 2017 12:43 (seven years ago) link

yeah the laundry thing was really good

k3vin k., Sunday, 9 April 2017 16:20 (seven years ago) link

Was expecting guy to maybe start fading out (last few seasons of his show have been mostly zzz IMO) but his new standup is sharp as hell. Great SNL monologue too. Still top of the pack.

circa1916, Sunday, 9 April 2017 16:26 (seven years ago) link

i was fading on him until i watched horace & pete a few weeks ago. i found the thread and tried to rave revive it, but in retrospect i was performing CPR on a corpse in the haunted woods. anyway, i thought horace and pete was flat-out brilliant and it made me excited about whatever he does next.

Karl Malone, Sunday, 9 April 2017 16:33 (seven years ago) link

I watched the first episode of H&P and felt like he was maybe, uh, up his own ass a bit, taking to heart his ~grim truth telling sad clown/artist~ space but that was probably a shitty read on it. Will give it a full watch soon enough. Probably when I'm less depressed.

circa1916, Sunday, 9 April 2017 16:46 (seven years ago) link

every single episode is more depressing than the one before, all the way through the end

Karl Malone, Sunday, 9 April 2017 16:49 (seven years ago) link

i think the reason the corpse cannot be revived is because it's really not a show i'd recommend to anyone. it's so fucking sad. it's reaaaaaally sad, relentlessly so.

Karl Malone, Sunday, 9 April 2017 16:50 (seven years ago) link

that eliminates about 99.9% of his audience but it's too bad because the format of the show is so unique. but even that is offputting - imagine sitting down to an 8-hour play with 10 intermissions. but somehow it works so well.

Karl Malone, Sunday, 9 April 2017 16:53 (seven years ago) link

the first episode is easily the worst, it leans heavily on the "sad assholes talkin bout politics" stuff which is definitely the weakest part of the show

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Sunday, 9 April 2017 16:56 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, I think fundamentally it did come down to "this is too bleak for me right now and I know it's just going to get worse" so I put it aside. One day.

circa1916, Sunday, 9 April 2017 17:27 (seven years ago) link

good monologue

SSN Lucci (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 9 April 2017 17:57 (seven years ago) link

The birthday clown piece seemed like something he brought in with him. Really well done.

Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr, and Violent J (誤訳侮辱), Sunday, 9 April 2017 18:01 (seven years ago) link

Didn't really find much of the Netflix standup funny.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Sunday, 9 April 2017 20:00 (seven years ago) link

I did like when he used the audience member's "CHRIST!!" thruout the "years" bit

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Sunday, 9 April 2017 20:05 (seven years ago) link

most of that monologue was at least two years old; had heard it in concert.
the giraffe bit was relatively new and cracked me up tho

It's like he gave himself the challenge of the toughest subjects to build a comedy set around: abortion, 9/11, ISIS beheadings, rescue dogs, etc.

who even are those other cats (Eazy), Monday, 10 April 2017 01:34 (seven years ago) link

Loved the quick bit about people before Christ counting down years and not knowing why. Much of it was very good and much better than whatever the last special was.

this occurred to me, too

i recall louie saying in an interview that he was listening to a george carlin set in the car or something and carlin led with an abortion joke, which impressed the hell out of louie. the show was in missouri or something. maybe that was his inspiration. i feel like this is a stevolende post.

That's awful.

Heavy Doors (jed_), Tuesday, 11 April 2017 03:28 (seven years ago) link

It's not funny. His delivery is terrible. I like him but no.

Heavy Doors (jed_), Tuesday, 11 April 2017 03:30 (seven years ago) link

He's not doing material...

Evan, Tuesday, 11 April 2017 04:32 (seven years ago) link

four months pass...

I'm assuming (based partially on his dodgy non-response) that there's something there, and also that he knows there's no way to address it without tarnishing his brand and rep, so he'll never do so unless someone forces his hand. Depressing but hardly surprising.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 24 August 2017 02:17 (six years ago) link

two weeks pass...

so this movie of his sounds like an extraordinarily bad idea huh

I understand your reservations but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised if you watch Pootie Tang with an open mind.

Scott Staph (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 12:44 (six years ago) link

ha, for real I made a game effort of watching Pootie Tang once upon a time and just count not stand more than half an hour

i keep starting his different shows and not finishing them. started horace & pete and baskets and the new one with whatsherface as a single mom but i never finish them. i also have that weird "should i still listen to my Swans albums?" feeling now with him because the internet says he is a sex criminal.

scott seward, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 13:02 (six years ago) link

he doesn't have a lot of creative involvement in Better Things iirc. adlon directed the entire upcoming season

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 13:03 (six years ago) link

Horace and Pete is a little much for me. It's like watching 5 Louis C.K.s talking about Louis C.K. stuff

crüt, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 13:06 (six years ago) link

I basically loved H&P for its audacity, though the scenes of characters discussing the election were uniformly terrible

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 13:10 (six years ago) link

Better Things is wonderful

Haven't watched Horace & Pete, but Better Things season 1 was fantastic. I didn't get around to it until it was on Hulu for free, so I guess I'll catch season 2 in a year or so.

grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 13:57 (six years ago) link

I found BT a bit hit-and-miss (and the privilege levels on display a little much) but I hear very good things about S2.

New interview:
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/11/movies/louis-ck-rumors-wont-answer.html

Premise sounds like prime Louie, in a potentially good way, but hard to imagine walking up to the box office and saying "Two for I Love You, Daddy."

Eazy, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 16:54 (six years ago) link

cast looks great but the meta-ness of it (an accused famous pervert making a film about another accused famous pervert in the style of an homage to the latter) might be a bit too much for me

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 16:59 (six years ago) link

and the way people talk about the "blood in the water" aspect in that piece made me a bit queasy, like the allegations actually *add* value

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 13 September 2017 17:03 (six years ago) link

yeah the whole "I'm not going to talk about this I'm just going to make a provocative movie about it but btw I am not talking about it" is jarring

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 13 September 2017 17:06 (six years ago) link

wtf is wrong with him. why would you make a movie like this unless you want to promote the pervy rumors about you
