I put it in my Netflix queue last week, still waiting for the first discs to arrive. Part of the cuteness discrepancy is lighting. Summer and Julie were semi-villains for the first half of the season, I guess, so they get bad lighting. You left out the best part of S1 - Anna.

Watched the second season from BitTorrent, up until the last ten episodes it really wasn't bad. The lesbian love triangle was better than I remembered, or maybe the third season was just terrible.

milo z (mlp), Monday, 12 June 2006 19:57 (seventeen years ago) link

i dont know. anna is little too easy for my liking. no personality conflict at all.

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 12 June 2006 20:09 (seventeen years ago) link

now, in a way, all i want to do for the next few days is watch world cup during the day and season 1 of the o.c. at night.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Monday, 12 June 2006 22:43 (seventeen years ago) link

do it.

jeffrey (johnson), Monday, 12 June 2006 22:45 (seventeen years ago) link

ALSO, lots of scenes with ryan and seth biking and skateboarding the pier with big smiles on their faces and adoring glances at each other. i almost expect the theme from 'courtship of eddies father' to kick in.

rrrobyn - do it

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 12:31 (seventeen years ago) link

i am going to do it except swap watching the world cup part for lying around and playing videogames.

first marissa-less OC promo shot?

Heh, it's embarrassing that I know this, but that's an old shot: my sister had a poster of the four "teens" in that exact same pose, with Marissa to Ryan's left. Looks like they edited her out and slapped the adults next to Ryan. Produces a weird effect; they all look so nonchalant about the death of one of their own!

reddening (reddening), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 23:52 (seventeen years ago) link

they're in shock you heartless monster

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 15 June 2006 02:03 (seventeen years ago) link

your 'sister'. riiiight.

i had no idea julie was so tall. maybe sandy and kirsten are just teenytiny.

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 15 June 2006 13:03 (seventeen years ago) link

WOAh check out my post from May 19th, 2006 12:45 PM. that .gif WAS lisa robin kelly shaking her farrah wings. now im scared.

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 15 June 2006 13:05 (seventeen years ago) link

24 episodes in to season 1 now. More stuff I've noticed:

sandy is clearly the star of this show in the first season. a much more humorous sandy than the season 3 perpetually pissed off sandy. dialogue between sandy and seth and sandy and caleb is unfailingly gold.

they sure talk about death cab for cutie A LOT

i had forgotten how goofy the luke character became following the whole school finding out his dad is gay. like goofy to the point where everyone is embarrassed by him.

the whole oliver ordeal was a bore.

kirstens drinking was already being made a point of early in the first season. when did she end up going to rehab? the end of season 2?

it seems they are using some kind of hook em in device which involves two characters repeating a, generally offhand, exchange word for word that two other characters had 5+ episodes before. i wonder if it was noticeable when watched weekly.

if this was early 2004 I'd be saying please get rid of jimmy and hailey but since its mid 2006 i already know that they did. thanks!

in the few moments that ryan isnt running around either punching people or saving them, he is actually really likable.

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 13:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I liked Jimmy up to the point where he just became the whipping boy - if all nothing else works, have him fail/get beaten up/etc..

milo z (mlp), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 21:04 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, he's a bore. plus this whole high morality road he takes when julie boffs the richest guy in town or her daughters ex-boyfriend. noone seems to be particularly offended that he embezzled a bunch of money. i did enjoy calebs 'ha ha you sure know how to piss people off, jimmy!' reaction though.

sunny successor (katharine), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 14:14 (seventeen years ago) link

four months pass...
this episode was better than the entirety of last season (which admittedly I only watched part of).

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 3 November 2006 14:57 (seventeen years ago) link

And all it took was cage fighting.

lindseykai (lindseykai), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:05 (seventeen years ago) link

also marissa's little sister = 10000x more interesting than marissa. although i've forgotten who luke was and hence who the two twins are supposed to be.

also I was really hoping ryan was getting it on with julie cooper but alas.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:09 (seventeen years ago) link

I HAVENT WATCHED IT YET. i fear marissa not being there. is julie a drug addict yet?

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:18 (seventeen years ago) link

it was totally good! could've been a bit darker - it'd only been 5 months since marissa's death after all - but it was sufficiently dark. ryan changed his mind re: coming back to pool house a bit too quickly really. but made up for that by agreeing to julie's revenge plot. julie cooper-nichol-roberts still awesome.

(whoa, what up with ilx highlighting spelling 'mistakes' in red?? new coding! funnnnnyyyy)

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:25 (seventeen years ago) link

do you have the new version of firefox? that highlighting started happening for me when I installed it. doesnt happen in the explorer browser at work.

i cant even remember who killed marissa. i keep thinking oliver but that was like season 1, no?

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:30 (seventeen years ago) link

haha, yes, i just realized this minute that it's b/c i upgraded firefox. okay, i turned that option off.

haha, that guy who she was going out with, the scruffy blond guy, did it. i think his name starts with b.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Marissa's little sister much less hatable this season.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 3 November 2006 15:54 (seventeen years ago) link

Volcek ran them off the road.

rrrobyn OTM about Ryan changing his mind. Why do they resolve issues so quickly? They did the same thing last year with Ryan's brother; he left town at the end of the season premiere. For such a melodramatic show, there's almost no tension because you know exactly what will be resolved each week. The writers need to learn how to work a cliffhanger.

lindseykai (lindseykai), Friday, 3 November 2006 16:48 (seventeen years ago) link

right, Volcek - i was thinking Bolcek or Bolduk or something for some reason.

those patent leather buckled kneehigh boots marissa's sister was putting on were crazy for a 14 yr old. wait, is that how old she is? this show...

kind of sad about summer and seth too. but roffles about summer going environmentalist at brown.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Friday, 3 November 2006 18:04 (seventeen years ago) link

ok, i finally watched this. listen, why does ryan always run back to chino every time something goes wrong? julie is from the hood too but she opts for pills and landscaping like any normal person would. and that whole thunderdome scene. i dont know. kinda gay.

and i just cant see a scenario in my mind where miss 'eww!' summer would suddenly care about caged chickens. obviously its not going to stick, but still.

i think caitlin is going to be a lot of fun. not sure what the twins are there for.

i bet summer's dad smells like potatoes.

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 14:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I loved the first two seasons of this show, thought last season was okish, but that season opener was complete garbage. I think it officially jumped the shark when Surfer Johnny jumped off the rocks, but I'm on the verge of abandoning it for good. Summer a hippie? Cagefighting? WTF? Although, the Summer storyline was at least good for the "It's your turn to jam on the didj" line.

what was up with those deliberately faked out photos of taylor in france? i thought i was watching a wes anderson film for a minute there.

and TWO EPISODES THIS WEEK! Wed and Thurs. wee!

sunny successor (katharine), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 01:18 (seventeen years ago) link

whoa, how is this on tonight? ok it is.
and hottness factor up! :
1) taylor shows up in summer's dorm room! in her bed! wearing black lacey thing! has nice new hairstyle. says "do you wanna come in and snuggle!" hahaha. summer says "eww" of course, but in a nicey way.
2) tia freakin relic hunter carrere appears to be the new highschool headmistress!

so far no new hott guyz though. but then, i never expected that really from this show. plus, am not the target market. well, maybe a sub-target market.

i agree that it's been going downhill since beginning of season 2 but it still has many entertaining qualities.

hahaha, i bet summer's dad smells like potatoes and disinfectant and some kind of expensive cologne that julie buys him that smells more like girls than guys.

XPOST! yaay!

haha, tv just told me they're showing US election coverage at midnight. (and prob already on other channels but i only have local channels b/c i am antenna/airwaves-only person.)

i agree that it's been going downhill since beginning of season 2 but it still has many entertaining qualities.

I dunno, the second season (esp. lesbo plotline) was a bit of a recovery from the Oliver episodes.

Then it sucked again when Ryan's bro showed up.

From the Moon to Pluto Back Down to Earth (Rrrickey), Friday, 10 November 2006 12:48 (seventeen years ago) link

It was all OKish until they did that comic book montage presentation. And Summer is officially the most unbelievable character on television and anyone's interaction with her only makes everything even more unbelievable (wtf Ryan brushing everyone off except Summer, just because?)

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Friday, 10 November 2006 15:01 (seventeen years ago) link

i like how julie insinuating that summer's dad leave means 'they broke up' and the easy plot device of moving to seattle allows julie to keep the house and prob a big divorce settlement/alimony and we get to start all over again with her!! haha, tv!

but seriously, i want to see more messed up behaviour - i mean, marissa DIED. maybe julie will start seeing a therapist and get it on with him? i also think taylor is going to mellow a bit and then she and seth, y'know.

but the whole show is still a bit stuck in 2004. and that's the first thing that needs addressing.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Friday, 10 November 2006 15:13 (seventeen years ago) link

is it just me, or is ryan's new haircut making him look a little:

sunny successor agrees: gay dad always trumps slutty mom (katharine), Friday, 10 November 2006 15:17 (seventeen years ago) link

haha, yes! too short on sides
i want to see seth with a short haircut. then we'll see what happens to his indieboyness. or like shaved head and beard.

i love how hairstyles on this show are like a driving force. clothes not so much lately - they need to get back to understanding the real motivators for the show, c'mon.
