Let's talk about BoJack Horseman, the new Netflix animated series (starring Will Arnett, Alison Brie, Amy Sedaris, Aaron Paul, etc)

I really really enjoyed this after it hit its stride later on in S1

not sure what else I have to say at the moment but the underwater episode is one of the finest animated half hours of TV I've ever seen

People watch it for the world and for the characters, who continue to get deeper and deeper.

i haven't seen that much rick and mordy but it doesn't seem to be very similar to bojack other than being a cartoon with an alcoholic protagonist

It's weird how between this and The Leftovers the two best shows on tv are explorations of depression and how it's ok to live that way. (Not counting Twin Peaks because it's transcended tv in many ways.)

We've been rewatching all three seasons. It's completely amazing. I have no idea, as I said before, why this isn't a 500-post thread, because this show seems almost precision-tailored to ILX. Oh, and it also follows an exciting arc: each season is slightly better than the previous one. Can they keep that going?

My Family Guy/Simpsons comparison to Rick & Morty was with the aim of showing up the latter in comparison to this tbh, but it's fine to like both I guess

Yeah surprised that ILX not all over this. Judging by my circile of friends - a lot of people (me included) were turned off by the first half of teh first season and it's been a struggle to convince them to give the show a second chance. I admired S03 but felt S02 remained the emotional apex

I can only speak for myself, but after hearing a hundred good things about this show I watched the first few episodes and thought, huh, this is not amazing and in fact I didn't like it at all. So when months/years later I heard the show gets better I just thought, well, I bet it does!

I guess some people just don't deserve this show

I don't really understand the Rick & Morty/Family Guy/Simpsons analogy. If anything it's more like this: Rick and Morty:Bojack::South Park:The Simpsons

xp i watched the pilot on Amazon, was pretty solid. a bit darker and less laugh out loud funny than the Warburton version but there were some solid superhero satire.

Never thought I'd be almost crying to a Nina Simone song on a snarky cartoon horse show

And also if you only just watched the first few episodes of season 1, you effectively haven't seen the show afaic, it's not like it just "gets better" like more adept, it goes in a completely different direction you can't really prepare for

yeah at first the show is quite glib about bojack's alcoholism and loneliness but then it actually actively explores it in a more human and seriousway, and he reaches some real rock bottom nadir moments which i found genuinely affecting

it's a good show

I like this show but some of it hits way too close to home that it just bums me out

it's very strange that the show that best depicts the actual effects of depression on victims and people in their lives is a pun-heavy show about a man-horse/horse-man but then again we live in strange times

I think that's what makes it work tbh, most depressed people (ime) don't constantly feel depressed, it's all about feeling it when the descent hits. the animal puns are like those stretches of time when you fleetingly forget you're a fuckup

that and i think that making it about goofy animals means it can get dark in a way that a live-action real people show would struggle with

imago's trolling take on Rick & Morty bizarre and comically off the mark.

I'm gonna give Bojack another spin. First three or so episodes I watched were not exactly inspiring.

The trouble with skipping episodes is that you miss stuff that sets up later payoffs. Just drink it all down and trust me that it gets good

I think you need to see 1.03. That sets up a lot of stuff. 5 and 6 are good as well. So, like, take it from 3?

You could jump to 1.08 (the Herb Kazazz episode) if you want to check how good it gets, and then double back, perhaps?

I reckon 7 is just as devastating as 8 in its own quieter way

Imago's comparison is bad because rick n morty is much closer in quality to bojack (arguably better in some ways) than family guy or South Park for that matter are to the simpsons

maybe not modern but Ren and Stimpy was top quality pretty much out of the gate

Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Battlestar Galactica - and those are just the Bs! - Fargo, Party Down, Justified, The Wire, The Americans ...

Comedies seem to have it tougher, since so much timing and whatnot stems from chemistry and being comfortable with one another, writers and actors alike.

most animated comedies i think of took a couple years to cohere. king of the hill, simpsons, etc

id argue so far s3 of rick & morty seems like inarguably the most consistent so far
