best movement of "a quick one, while he's away" by the who

"You Are Forgiven" is the best, up until the silly mock operatic ending.

The intro a capella is so glorious--not sure if it qualifies as a whole movement if it only lasts ten seconds though.

They revived this for part of the 2015 tour, first time in 47 years. I saw the Foxwoods (Casino in CT) show that May, and it was fortunately still in the setlist. It wasn't barnstorming (largely due to, oddly enough, Zak Starkey's relatively muted performance), but came off as quaint and charming. Most of the audience, sadly, either sat (for the only time that night) or went to the bathroom.

When Who fanatics say, "Why don't they play more obscure stuff?" it's because most of their audience doesn't give a shit and apparently gets confused and disoriented when they hear something they haven't heard before.

Seriously, since they expanded Live at Leeds to feature the full concert (including Tommy etc.) the version of 'A Quick One, While He's Away' on that has pretty much become the definitive version for me, or the one that I've listened to the most at any rate. I vastly prefer it to the studio version, and while we're at it I'm more likely to listen to the live version of Tommy than the studio album too.

Billy Childish likes to cover the You Are Forgiven segment, he's done several versions of it with his various bands and plays it live a lot, when he plays live which he hasn't much recently.

I can imagine if they did "Dogs" live, the audience might cry if they thought that they'd dropped 'Baba O'Reilly" in preference.

Is the "dang dang dang..." part considered a section of Soon Be Home or You Are Forgiven? That's the highlight for me.

You Are Forgiven section on Rock n Roll Circus is the best thing ever, especially if it owns the dang dang bit. That Lennon/Yoko noise is quite revealing: Once he would surely have appreciated the humour in the original, but now he and his wife proceed to suck out the fun, the pisstaking, the cheek of the thing, and regurgitate it into atonal 'primal' wibbling that is no fun at all.

i was obsessed with The Kids Are Alright when i was a kid, and played their live "A Quick One" endlessly. it was one of the first songs i learned how to play, my brother played drums and i played guitar and we had all the parts figured out from tabs.

i really don't like The Who but i always love that bit in Rock N Roll Circus where all the band come and sit/stand together at the start of this. i've literally never seen a band do that ever before or since.

I'm not really much of a Who fan either but I go into mini phases of obsession with this song

Am a medium level Who fan but this, um, suite seems to distill what they were good at to its essence.

The Who were half a million dollars in debt, their last two singles had flopped in the UK, they were back to playing at the Marquee, and basically couldn't get arrested when they did the RnR Circus. It wasn't even a matter of playing like they had something to prove; they just did what they'd done a few dozen times in the US that year. They had no idea how good they were. Of course, everyone else on the bill was floored by it (and it was one of the reasons the Stones shelved the special for 28 years, as they didn't look great by comparison).

i think maybe i had only ever listened to the rock'n'roll circus/live at leeds versions of this bc i am listening to the studio version now and it sounds really weird and unfamiliar (and bad)

Yeah, the studio version isn't great, but then I loathe the way that album sounds. I'm sure I've said this before, but I don't think they made a great sounding studio album until Who's Next.

I think My Generation sounds great, as do all the '60s non-album singles. But yeah, apart from a few songs, A Quick One is poorly produced.

I still dig the studio version, though; like what I said about their 2015 live rendition, it's quaint and charming rather than menacing and powerful. But I vastly prefer the RnR Circus and Leeds versions.

I just had to watch the Rock'n'Roll Circus performance of this again. Fuck, Moon is on fire and the climax of 'You Are Forgiven' is electrifying as fuck. So much energy and intensity. The Stones played like a wet fart in comparison.

Yeah, that's the thing: the Who played more shows in the summer and fall of 1968 than the Stones had played in the preceding three years.

The Stones arguably were putting out the better records, though.

I always wished Peter Brötzmann had made Low-Life with John Entwistle instead of with Bill Laswell.

It's really, really difficult for me to imagine any other bassist working with Moon so well.
