i srsly have a ton of stuff to nom but first I just wanna say this

Inner Life - I'm Caught Up (In A One Night Love Affair)

jay kay huysmans (NickB), Monday, 20 March 2017 23:50 (seven years ago) link

If there's a huge overlap with the disco poll I might set some rules, but I think it will work out fine.

OK, but 15 of the top 20 tracks from the Disco Poll have already been nominated, which looks like quite an overlap!

mike t-diva, Monday, 20 March 2017 23:55 (seven years ago) link

You cannot talk about even just "1970s SOUL/FUNK" without including disco, it doesn't make sense. I would be happy to exclude Eurodisco and other flavours that aren't part of the story but I don't think you can ban all overlap with the other poll.

Choco Blavatsky (seandalai), Tuesday, 21 March 2017 00:07 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, banning disco is crazytalk. NickB thanks for remembering Inner Life. That's a top 10 candidate for me and it completely slipped my mind.

gospodin simmel, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 00:13 (seven years ago) link

Another vote-for-whatever-you-want vote. This one should be all-encompassing. Exceptionally dicey interpretations of what qualifies won't get enough votes to disrupt anything anyway (and if the votes are there, then it's automatically no longer dicey, it belongs*).

*does not apply to President of the United States

clemenza, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 00:48 (seven years ago) link

You don't have to ban disco... just be reasonable and anti-completist

a but (brimstead), Tuesday, 21 March 2017 01:00 (seven years ago) link

In this context, I'm far less likely to vote for anything remotely Eurodisco, which even in the context of the disco poll was already a pretty distant threat.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 21 March 2017 05:20 (seven years ago) link

In other words ... no bassline, no vote.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 21 March 2017 05:21 (seven years ago) link

clemenza otm. Of course disco won't be banned.

Oh yeah, you're absolutely right. I was typing that list out really quickly. I was bound to make a few mistakes.

Also, where is Tuomas?

'Tis done. I thought I'd been thwarted, but it's on as "Let's Love Dance Tonight".

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 00:40 (seven years ago) link

I was dying to nom "I'll Bet You," but it originally came out as a single in 1969. Did we decide the rules about records like that?

Al Green - L-O-V-E
Isley Brothers - Footsteps in the Dark
Isley Brothers - Live It Up
Pleasure - Glide
Robert Palmer - Every Kinda People
Stevie Wonder - All In Love Is Fair
Stevie Wonder - Visions
Stevie Wonder - Too High

Futuristic Bow Wow (thewufs), Wednesday, 22 March 2017 02:04 (seven years ago) link

If it came out late in 1969 and charted in 1970 it's fine by me. I can't check every single release date, though, so let me know if something has slipped through.

off-topic: what's a good site for chart statistics?

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 06:52 (seven years ago) link

song-database.com is good and accurate for billboard charts (tho not complete for all charts). if you view too many chart trajectories, tho, it'll start asking you to register and pay lol. to avoid that i usually just search for the artist or song i wanna look up and just look at the peak or debut date/peak date that i'm seeking out (w/o clicking on the chart trajectory). for example typing "i'll bet you" into the songs search bar tells me that it entered the chart in the oct. 4, 1969 issue and peaked at #63 in the nov. 1 issue.

for approximate 45rpm single release date estimates i usually look at 45cat.com since the ppl entering info there seem to know their shit and like to quibble over totally trivial shit like months of release, matrix numbers, when it was reviewed in trade journals and other things i don't care about. anyway that site sez the 45 for "i'll bet you" was issued in august '69.
