My inclination would be to count "I Want You Back" as 1969. Even though it didn't hit #1 until 1970, it had already entered the Top 10 on the last Hot 100 of 1969 (I checked). When you add in dyl's point about the two-week lag time, it was definitely ubiquitous before 1970 had begun--which wasn't true of "Rainy Night in Georgia" or "Didn't I." Agree with JF's general point that the charts should be the arbiter, not release dates (much less the release date of whatever album the song is on).

I'll also fully disclose that I'm one of the few tortured souls who is not moved by "I Want You Back" (even right now as caught up in a real-life "I want you back" moment) so that factors into my date-of-release pedantry.

Cerrone - Supernature

I know it's nigh impossible to genre-police this poll, but really?

Choco Blavatsky (seandalai), Monday, 20 March 2017 16:57 (seven years ago) link

Might it be a good idea to exclude tracks which have already made the Disco Poll Top 100 in 2013? (This would also remove "Supernature", FWIW.)

mike t-diva, Monday, 20 March 2017 17:07 (seven years ago) link

Meh, some people's ballots are going to be heavy on rock-funk, others' on quiet soul, others' on yowsah yowsah yowsah. The fun will be in seeing how they all balance out.

We're up to 615 tracks now.

ArchCarrier, Monday, 20 March 2017 22:21 (seven years ago) link

If there's a huge overlap with the disco poll I might set some rules, but I think it will work out fine.
In the albums poll, most of the funk ended up in the lower half because not enough people voted for it. I don't think Cerrone has a big chance of getting anywhere near the top, but good for them if they manage to.

ArchCarrier, Monday, 20 March 2017 22:27 (seven years ago) link

Couple more:

Johnny Guitar Watson - A Real Mother for Ya
The Isley Brothers - Love the One You're With
The Intruders - (Win, Place, Or Show) She's a Winner
Diana Ross - Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going to)
The Wiz Stars - A Brand New Day

The Wiz Stars - A Brand New Day

Which version is this? The Broadway or movie one? (I'm in the camp that actually prefers Quincy's full torpedoes ahead approach.)

ArchCarrier, Monday, 20 March 2017 23:01 (seven years ago) link

Interesting, and never heard it. That's the movie version, only reversing the second and third verses so that it ends with the choir-backed one. I like it!

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 20 March 2017 23:10 (seven years ago) link

I suspect it might be some fan edit, but the single version is obviously great too.

Inner Life - I'm Caught Up (In A One Night Love Affair)

jay kay huysmans (NickB), Monday, 20 March 2017 23:50 (seven years ago) link

If there's a huge overlap with the disco poll I might set some rules, but I think it will work out fine.

OK, but 15 of the top 20 tracks from the Disco Poll have already been nominated, which looks like quite an overlap!

mike t-diva, Monday, 20 March 2017 23:55 (seven years ago) link

You cannot talk about even just "1970s SOUL/FUNK" without including disco, it doesn't make sense. I would be happy to exclude Eurodisco and other flavours that aren't part of the story but I don't think you can ban all overlap with the other poll.

Choco Blavatsky (seandalai), Tuesday, 21 March 2017 00:07 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, banning disco is crazytalk. NickB thanks for remembering Inner Life. That's a top 10 candidate for me and it completely slipped my mind.

gospodin simmel, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 00:13 (seven years ago) link

Another vote-for-whatever-you-want vote. This one should be all-encompassing. Exceptionally dicey interpretations of what qualifies won't get enough votes to disrupt anything anyway (and if the votes are there, then it's automatically no longer dicey, it belongs*).

*does not apply to President of the United States

clemenza, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 00:48 (seven years ago) link

You don't have to ban disco... just be reasonable and anti-completist

a but (brimstead), Tuesday, 21 March 2017 01:00 (seven years ago) link

In this context, I'm far less likely to vote for anything remotely Eurodisco, which even in the context of the disco poll was already a pretty distant threat.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 21 March 2017 05:20 (seven years ago) link

In other words ... no bassline, no vote.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 21 March 2017 05:21 (seven years ago) link

clemenza otm. Of course disco won't be banned.
