"breathe" is my favorite michelle branch single and is pretty much a 100 percent perfect song imo

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Monday, 13 March 2017 18:04 (seven years ago) link

I just listened to the song and was like, wow she really sounds like LDR. And it's not even the same Black Keys dude!

how's life, Monday, 13 March 2017 18:06 (seven years ago) link

None of them.

Coolio Iglesias (Turrican), Monday, 13 March 2017 18:18 (seven years ago) link

I don't remember how any of these sound and maybe I should be grateful considering the presence of Puddle of Mudd in the list.

Dan.S., Monday, 13 March 2017 18:38 (seven years ago) link

2. P. Diddy & the Bad Boy Family - "Bad Boy For Life"
3. P.O.D. - "Alive"
4. J. Lo ft. Ja Rule - "I'm Real (Remix)"
5. Sum 41 - "Fat Lip"

i only remember these ones (and even then "i'm real" is really nondescript and i can only sort of opaquely remember it)

Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Monday, 13 March 2017 18:42 (seven years ago) link

"crush" > "everywhere" > "ugly" > "this is me (remix)" > "fat lip"

the original non-remixed "this is me" (which was being played on trl earlier and i believe went #1 at one point) would have been my favorite of them all tho

dyl, Monday, 13 March 2017 18:45 (seven years ago) link

i voted 'Alive' - for me it's completely tied down to that time, fall 2001, along w/ 'Youth of the Nation' and 'Boom.' the premise of the 'Alive' video was some Final Destination shit iirc, like there's a big bus crash and car accidents and these people barely survive and it's like 'omg life comes at you fast, it can change at any moment, value every second,' and of fucking course it was reevaluated after 9/11 to be unintentionally meaningful. i would've voted 'Fat Lip' because it's a better song and i still blast it semi-reg

flappy bird, Monday, 13 March 2017 20:19 (seven years ago) link

Whoa. Someone who's not me did one of these!

billstevejim, Monday, 13 March 2017 21:06 (seven years ago) link

i picked this date because all these songs/videos - and others like 'How You Remind Me,' 'Chop Suey!,' 'IZZO (Hova),' 'Stay Together for the Kids,' and that Ryan Adams song with the Twin Towers in the background are burned into my brain. I watched a lot of MTV after 9/11. the VMAs happened on 9/9/01 - I vividly remember seeing the videos for 'Hash Pipe' and 'Get Ur Freak On' for the first time that night. that was also the night I found out Limp Bizkit was a band and not a rapper. a couple weeks later MTV repurposed an all-star cover of 'What's Goin On' that was originally supposed to be about AIDS for 9/11 first responders relief.

The Elton John video "I Want Love" with Robert Downey Jr was def in heavy rotation.

VMAs that year was def on a Thursday night - Sept 6. There was a very brief half-assed Aaliyah tribute. Pretty sure this was the same day they taped most of the video for "What's Going On" since a large fraction of the contributors were also present at this show. A good poll (if it hasn't been done already) might be to choose the worst post-9/11 reaction song since all of them were flaming garbage.

billstevejim, Monday, 13 March 2017 21:41 (seven years ago) link

I fondly recall being 11 and knowing these songs, but Bubba Sparxx' Ugly is the only one that really holds up. One of my favorite music videos of all time.

I'm surprised that Puddle of Mudd track was pre-9/11

piscesx, Tuesday, 14 March 2017 02:57 (seven years ago) link

that was the 'why they hate us' vmas. missy dedicated 'one minute man' to aaliyah, britney and the snake, macy gray's 'MY ALBUM DROPS' dress, alicia keys doing (lol) 'für elise' into 'fallin,' DAPHNE AGUILERA

i watched it in canada

maura, Tuesday, 14 March 2017 12:24 (seven years ago) link

anyway the obvious winner here is the dream song. they had some jams

maura, Tuesday, 14 March 2017 12:25 (seven years ago) link

I might recognize them if I heard them, but I genuinely have no idea what any of these songs are. Carson would be so ashamed.

Milkwalker's World (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 14 March 2017 12:35 (seven years ago) link

the riff in bad boy for life bangs

Yes. It's ridiculous. I got a Yamaha RS7000 that summer and I remember the first beat I made with it was unintentionally a BB4L rip-off. It's so jerky and the sound quality is terrible, it just needs a saxophone solo.

"Alive" on instinct, having not heard it in 15 years. Listening now it holds up IMO.

The drums on 'Bad Boy for Life' are soooo nasty.

i heard "alive" on the radio today coincidentally, hadn't heard it in ages. i liked it better in 2001.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 15 March 2017 17:48 (seven years ago) link

The chorus of "Alive" sort of always reminded me of the chorus in Paul McCartney "No More Lonely Nights."

flappy bird, Monday, 20 March 2017 14:31 (seven years ago) link

I'm surprised anyone else hears it. When I first heard the chorus, it sounded really familiar & '80s. And I've never been able to figure out a closer cognitive match.

billstevejim, Monday, 20 March 2017 16:34 (seven years ago) link

Puddle of Mudd was a good band.

god this list is depressing. it is certainly the late 90s. the ugliest trashiest year for pop imo. pretty sure this is the year i decided fuck the this i am only listening to Beck and indie rock from now on.

Voted for "Fat Lip." Mostly for the PG13-version-of-Gummo vibe of the video.
