did i share in the nominations/campaigning thread that: a few years ago i was dating someone with whom i had perfectly aligned '90s emo tastes (we even went to a hot water music show together); one night we were hanging out in her apartment and she was talking about how "sea anemone" really reflected her experience of depression and alcoholism and the general feeling of being displaced in your own life. then she played it, and we started to make out, and it was one of the most emotionally intense experiences i've ever had in my life
story is kinda lol and earnest in the telling but for real, what a song

brad which album?
i really hope a future lived in past tense places bc i've rarely had such a singular "i'm in love with everything about this" moment in my first listen to an album

i voted for perfecting loneliness, which i think is better than any jawbreaker album, but orange is also just incredibly wonderful. i wanna write a song like "chinatown" one day

I think you mentioned a general 'I made out to sea anemone once' but the specifics are good ty

I mean I probably made out with a particular ex while listening to some of these records but she also told me that converge reminded her of the shitty hardcore band I was in at the time so I don't think she was really paying attention to the music

So this is weird: For years the Milwaukee Brewers used "Lemon Yellow Black" as the song they played during the between innings grounds crew cleanup at Miller Park at every game. Now I can't hear that riff without thinking of Prince Fielder and summer and plastic cups of cold domestic beer.
― Evan R, Friday, 10 March 2017 16:54 (seven years ago) link
My makeout story is about 'Edge of the Deep Green Sea', so maybe next time.

lol @ brewers, that is awesome

This is Blake's MO really. I love it but it's kind of what he does.
Also I'll dissent on all this Jets to Brazil > Jawbreaker nonsense.

I rode with a bunch of friends through a blizzard to Lancaster, PA to try to see JTB. The ride took several hours longer than anticipated, and we got to the club just as the front doors were opening and people began filing out, singing "Sweet Avenue" as they strolled past us.

xp Damn, that's a lineup! Yeah, I think there was some fluky thing where two tours crossed paths are were put onto one bill ($6! at a pretty big club). I couldn't even drive yet, but I can't imagine what the older Fugazi fans must have though. Emo was pretty derided in punk circles here around that time (lots of bad jokes about Tickle Me Emo dolls and shit), and the city had kind of a conflicted relationship with The Promise Ring back then

Simon, are you from Ottawa? I'm trying to work out if I might have seen your hardcore band.

Also Compound Red's record would have been my ballot/nomination. Feel like they're mostly forgotten. But there's a SDRE vibe to them, maybe Fireside (from what I remember, haven't listened to Fireside inawhile)

And with that, Brad persuades me to give this a chance.
I should give it a listen too.

true story: i wrote an email to Jim Adkins asking him if "goodbye sky harbor" was about A Prayer for Owen Meany bc it was my favorite book and he replied about a month later thanking me for writing and confirmed that yes it was about A Prayer for Owen Meany and it was his favorite book too

I don't mind Bleed American tbh, although "Sweetness" is the real standout.

i meant to tell this story when static prevails placed, but i took my then eleven-year-old brother to see JEW play to a crowd of about 25ppl on a school night in 1997.
when clarity was all his freshman-year friends' favorite album a few years later he had major cool points
