“So… it’s a little complicated. I may seem a little bit evasive here, and I don’t mean to. It’s not entirely certain whether I am or am not. I might be. I might be, but I might not be. That really is the truth. Just to be clear, to dispel any potential weirdness, it has nothing to do with my relationship to anyone on the show or Rob or Charlie or anyone like that. It’s partially a creative and personal decision. We may be taking an extended hiatus between season 12 and season 13. So I’m certainly staying open to the possibility of doing more, but there is a possibility that I will not.”

The reason for his possible departure became more clear following Uproxx’s interview, with NBC announcing that Howerton had been cast alongside Patton Oswalt in a sitcom pilot from Seth Meyers and SNL’s Mike O’Brien called AP Bio. Should that pilot go to series, it would likely seriously cut into Howerton’s time for It’s Always Sunny, which could explain the show’s possible hiatus.

Charlie Day already has a career in films, Mac wants to work behind the camera and Dee got a sitcom...considering that Glen Howerton missed out on stuff like Guardians of the Galaxy and other films, maybe he feels like time is passing and if he wants to be something else other than Dennis - he's got to take the shot. I doubt any of those guys figured that It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia would last this long anyway and still kinda be rising.

If they lay off six extra months before doing another season, it might make the debut even bigger next time.

earlnash, Friday, 10 March 2017 04:41 (seven years ago) link

tbrr that pilot will never make it and he'll be back and they will have an extended joke about it xp

if not, good for him

I would be fine with Always Sunny ending on a high note even if I will miss it

they did a lot of character coda stuff! nothing for Frank or Dee, but the bit with Charlie and the waitress was something. and has anyone noticed that the dude who plays Cricket is a pastor on the other fx show Baskets? as if it exists in some parallel comedy universe or a world before Always Sunny

who was howard up for in Guardians?

Chris Pratt's character. I thought I read somewhere that Rob McElhenney was up for that role too but I can't find anything about it now.

LOL @ Dennis being labeled the moral compass of the show

have not read that post yet but calling dennis the moral compass of the show seems like not getting the show to me

he def tries to keep the rest of the gang in line

lag∞n, Friday, 10 March 2017 17:12 (seven years ago) link

lol "moral" compass is stretching it tho. voice of reason seems more accurate

k3vin k., Friday, 10 March 2017 17:16 (seven years ago) link

that wld prob be better tho even reason is a reach maybe "bossy vain one"

great episode and finale, I'm ok with them ending if it has to. They've had a really consistent run.

Οὖτις, Friday, 10 March 2017 17:20 (seven years ago) link

the line Dennis wants them to toe is uh, some sort of different morality

otm charlie is morally ok but misguided

apparently they have signed on for 2 further seasons but they're taking a hiatus after this season and glenn howerton might not be back for the next season (this has probably been posted upthread)

thought last season was really ropey but this season was A+++

charlie finally hooking up with the waitress then being not that into it was very good

lag∞n, Friday, 10 March 2017 18:39 (seven years ago) link

all the sexist "don't be so emotional" stuff w the waitress + Dee was great, esp contrasted w Mandy who was completely dispassionate the entire time

Οὖτις, Friday, 10 March 2017 18:47 (seven years ago) link

it was kind of a contrast between women they knew and were increasingly shitty to, versus this woman outside the group they seemed to be bending over backward in an attempt to avoid confrontation over the truth

so many ways of not treating women as human

haha yes

some of the jokes this season have veered a lil into good boy ally territory this season imo, seams showing

charlie's precisely as amoral as the rest, just less ambitious or scheming!

This is actually pretty impressive!

Charlie's scheming has really only focused on the waitress and on that subject it has been shown he can get pretty ambitious.

Not to mention his leprechaun trapping

Realizing I was several seasons behind - like, most of them - I've been catching up at a rapid pace, and so far they've all been awesome ... until the start of season 7 (where I'm at). "Jersey Shore" and "Frank's Little Beauties" were both pretty lame and obvious, in both their over their topness and obviousness. I mean, they both had their moments - Jersey Shore in particular - but overall kinda lame. Anyway, I know it will get better, but we were talking about worst episodes and, well, I'm there.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 March 2017 20:07 (seven years ago) link

Jersey Shore worth it just for the um sex scene under the boardwalk

Οὖτις, Monday, 13 March 2017 20:16 (seven years ago) link

+ Charlie's beach romance night w the waitress

and drinking sunscreen

Οὖτις, Monday, 13 March 2017 20:17 (seven years ago) link

Sex scene is the sort of thing I was talking about. Of course they were going to see something like that, just telegraphed. Same with Mac and Frank adrift in the raft (which other show had this same gag, I'm racking my brain ...). Same with Dee's hair in the ride. And armed robbery and murder accessory ridiculous even for this show. I did like Charlie's arc, though by this show's standard of continuity... how could he have never seen the ocean, he was in Atlantic City the previous season.

But yeah, it had its moments, just didn't seem like it was trying at all. Better than Frank's Beauties by far, though.

Archer? Did that have him adrift at sea? No, "Review"!

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 March 2017 20:25 (seven years ago) link

Hah, beat me by seconds.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 March 2017 20:25 (seven years ago) link

I didn't like Frank's Beauties, no argument there. I do agree Dee and Dennis' crime spree was a bit too OTT.

rum ham

jersey shore is classic! RUMHAM

lag∞n, Monday, 13 March 2017 21:10 (seven years ago) link

came to post rum ham, not disappointed when I got to the bottom of the thread

mh 😏, Monday, 13 March 2017 21:50 (seven years ago) link

Rumham was a very Dumb Homer moment. But, like, even that - it's sort of sideways funny but all the effort to hide booze is just very ... yeah, dumb Homer. I mean, when they revealed the sunblock bottle ruse, I was just counting the seconds to Charlie drinking straight sunblock. When the guy came by the bar to regulate the child pageant, I was just counting the seconds till his reveal as a pedo. And so on.

I dunno, I like the show and I like the Gang (in a way), but now that I think of it, all three eps of season 7 push things a bit too far with lesser results, imo. Including lots of fake blood, now that I think of it. Dee's CGI hair wound, Frank's broken nose, Charlie jet-vomiting blood capsules, all a little too TV-world for me. And this is coming after weeks of binging on past seasons, which I've loved without exception, iirc.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 March 2017 21:56 (seven years ago) link

(Obviously I am being nit-picky, the show is hilarious, just a weird lull I've hit.)
