the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 00:02 (seven years ago) link

i like the other stuff but it doesn't do it for me like that record

Jupiter is a pretty definitive post-hardcore album in my opinion, literally a hardcore band that stopped playing hardcore and started playing something else. Braid sounded like a hardcore band on Frankie Welfare Boy Age 5, and by Frame and Canvas were following more pop tropes than anything.

That said, Jupiter is not emo and I wouldn't have voted for it.

I think I can define what /isn't/ emo better than what /is/.

Guy Pidgeotto (Tom Violence), Thursday, 9 March 2017 00:05 (seven years ago) link

Well you have always been the most emo person I know!

Odysseus, Thursday, 9 March 2017 00:15 (seven years ago) link

Listening to that Crying album, it's v fun i dig it

Yoni Loves Chocha (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 9 March 2017 00:49 (seven years ago) link

This thread has inspired me to give Fall Out Boy another chance...the plan was to work my way through chronologically (skipping the first one), but From Under the Cork Tree was just not my thing at all so I gave up. Got to listen to about half of Infinity on High at work today and yeah this is way better.

cwkiii, Thursday, 9 March 2017 01:01 (seven years ago) link

i was at isis and piebald shows back in the day, those bands all knew each other b/c boston is small but NO ONE at the time would have called isis emo (or converge or cave in tbh)

Woo Los Compensinos did me the favor of playing the one song by them I really know (romance is boring) right off the bat.

Mordy, Thursday, 9 March 2017 02:39 (seven years ago) link

yo how was crying??

call all destroyer, Thursday, 9 March 2017 02:53 (seven years ago) link

Really great I had no idea it was such a small band making such a big sound

Mordy, Thursday, 9 March 2017 02:56 (seven years ago) link

i can't post while at work so i miss all these roll-outs. i also didn't get to listen to any album before this poll so my ballot was limited. in fact i only ranked a Top 10 but submitted a Top 25. not very emo i'm afraid. so if Bright Eyes has aged that badly i'm sorry. also Imago, i voted for A Story In White for my Aereogramme pick.

8/25

is it still just three ppl? crazy if so.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 9 March 2017 03:06 (seven years ago) link

yes guitar, drums, vocalist. and i'm always impressed when these huge voices come out of these small singers.

Mordy, Thursday, 9 March 2017 03:13 (seven years ago) link

is this the band l0u15 spilled the beer on?

just another (diamonddave85), Thursday, 9 March 2017 06:26 (seven years ago) link

lol yes well remembered (it was their merch tho and I cleaned it up with my shirt)

an uptempo Pop/Hip Hop mentality (imago), Thursday, 9 March 2017 10:58 (seven years ago) link

What I gathered from Youtube is that the synth tracks are pre-recorded and cued by the guitarist. Is that how it works?

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Thursday, 9 March 2017 13:05 (seven years ago) link

yeah there's a backing track

an uptempo Pop/Hip Hop mentality (imago), Thursday, 9 March 2017 13:24 (seven years ago) link

Listening to Three Cheers, I didn't rank it high enough. Just consistent hooky rock energy.

The thing is, this does sound like a pop version of 90s Dischord/post-hardcore to me. "Screaming Infidelities" just makes me think of a male Jewel or some shit.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Thursday, 9 March 2017 13:51 (seven years ago) link

This thread has inspired me to give Fall Out Boy another chance.

These days more than ever I really feel Folie a Deux is their only consistently great album, though most of Save Rock and Roll is strong.

YES

one of the most transcendent live shows I've ever seen, I felt very lucky to catch her when I did

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:07 (seven years ago) link

Another one I've never heard of

Odysseus, Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:08 (seven years ago) link

also I really hope she records a covers EP or something one day cause her covers are stunning (that I've heard, DCFC's "Photobooth" and Jawbreaker's "Accident Prone")

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:09 (seven years ago) link

speaking of covers, dashboard covers the title track on the EP they just put out

Mordy, Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:11 (seven years ago) link

Oh good! I voted for this.

cajunsunday, Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:13 (seven years ago) link

yay! amazing album and another one that i could see placing higher in ten years

devvvine, Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:13 (seven years ago) link

"Rejoice" is maybe the most shattering song I've ever heard. Also, a friend of mine works with profoundly at-risk youth and "Go Home" really struck a nerve.

...this. otoh, really did not stand up to a relisten for me.

lmao

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:27 (seven years ago) link

what a bummer if three bright eyes records placed and no desaparecidos

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:28 (seven years ago) link

no way Read Music / Speak Spanish doesn't place.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:28 (seven years ago) link

I did like this album but not heard it in years. I need to dig out my cd's and give the 3 albums I have a listen

Desaparecidos album I still love but ive never heard the recent one. was it any good?

Odysseus, Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:29 (seven years ago) link

Yeah it was solid as hell

Just in case it doesn't place, another classic from the Fork archives: http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/2288-read-music-speak-spanish/

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:29 (seven years ago) link

thank u for reassuring me simon

revised: how righteous for read music to place over every bright eyes record

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:29 (seven years ago) link

Lol. I love Read Music/Speak Spanish, but this is my favourite Bright Eyes album by a mile and this was third on my ballot and forever in my heart. This was the first 'weird' emo album I ever owned and the fact that it took me so many more listens to get into and interpret just made it all the more rewarding.

Haha waht

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:42 (seven years ago) link

So happy Julien Baker placed! Also, Desaparecidos is bound to place, and rightfully so imho. Lifted... indeed doesn't hold up well tbh.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:43 (seven years ago) link

Emoprog forever. My #2. Every track holds up. This album is all over the place in the best possible way.

tangenttangent, Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:43 (seven years ago) link

Ugly Organ is great so far!

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:46 (seven years ago) link

I ended up giving this one some nostalgia points

ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 9 March 2017 14:46 (seven years ago) link

I would invite a subpoll of 10+ minute emo album closers, Ugly Organ vs Lifted vs. Clarity vs. Is Terrified (and surely others)
