That looks almost identical to a colourshifted cover of an album that's bound to place later

some of the songs on RIP are incredible too, yet another band that feels like they had a ton more to say

yeah I can't figure that out either

Yay, Los Campesinos! One of the most wordy albums I've listened to. Some many great lyrics on that one.

Marty8501 (Marty Innerlogic), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:20 (seven years ago) link

So many great lyrics I mean...

Marty8501 (Marty Innerlogic), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:21 (seven years ago) link

Listening to fireside. Reminds me a bit of Commander Venus/Bright Eyes. But I like it so far
also nobody nommed Commander Venus?

Odysseus, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:21 (seven years ago) link

btw i always thought of romance is boring as the beginning of the end for los campesinos but everyone's enthusiasm on the campaigning thread made me revisit it, and now i think it's their best album, all of the combustibility of the previous two records but magnified 100x

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:24 (seven years ago) link

ok count me in on the Fireside camp. Would've voted for this if I'd heard it.

Odysseus, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:24 (seven years ago) link

I'm listening to it again today and it's quite brilliant, sorry for not shutting up about Fireside I'll listen to everything else soon enough

an uptempo Pop/Hip Hop mentality (imago), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:27 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, I can see that (regarding Romance Is Boring). Though I think their later albums are also pretty good (haven't heard the new one yet, but loved the first single).

Fireside later on, 2003, released a more meat and potatoes rock album called Get Shot, which I also kinda like but never revisited (and is nowhere near as goos as Elite - they really dropped the ball). Anyone familiar with that one? I saw them live during that era and distinctly remember a very poorly attended tuesday evening show in Vera, Groningen. They broke up after that tour i believe.

Marty8501 (Marty Innerlogic), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:27 (seven years ago) link

Nowhere near as GOOD, damn typos.

Marty8501 (Marty Innerlogic), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:28 (seven years ago) link

Going to dig out all my issues of Skyscraper I imported from the states to see if there's any good articles on some of these bands.

Odysseus, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:29 (seven years ago) link

Marty, are you from Groningen?

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:30 (seven years ago) link

Where do you go after releasing an 'emo' album with a 12-minute krautrock workout in the middle?

jejune is great, wow

No, I live about 50 miles from Groningen (but I do work there). I'm a Frisian.

incredible album

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:36 (seven years ago) link

xp - OK, cool. Vera was more or less my second living room from the mid-90s to the mid 00s but I didn't see that Fireside show.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:37 (seven years ago) link

fun emo fact: I went on a date in Ottawa with a girl who freaked out that I knew who the Hotelier were, we bonded over shared emo loves, had what seemed to be a v nice time, and then I never saw her again until a few months later when she was out walking with some dude she was definitely dating. the end

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:46 (seven years ago) link

my issue with home is that the recording itself is not great but: those songs

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:47 (seven years ago) link

to make the most banal point ever, I like the raw sound and think it perfectly suits the rawness of the EMOTIONS

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:59 (seven years ago) link

idk when the mix is reduced to bass and drums in "in framing" and the bass sounds like it's being played in another room, it's mostly distracting, not raw

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:59 (seven years ago) link

Hi, another dutch northerner and Elite fan calling in :) Haven't listened to it in 10+ years but will put it on tonight. It's sort of an anomaly (and definitely the peak) in their oeuvre.

willem, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 16:02 (seven years ago) link

it's because the bass is abandoned and alone xp

Dang, seeing three of my favs—Romance is Boring, Brand New Eyes and especially Home—place so low is kinda crushing. Feel like if this poll were done five or 10 years from now Hotelier would be a slam dunk top 10.

man I hope not, they're one of the best rock bands on the planet at the moment imo

Dear You's slow critical rehabilitation has been amusing

Wow I wasn't able to check the thread since yesterday, a lot of interesting results!

gr8080 otm re: Promise Ring & Dashboard Confessional

Also I mentioned this in either the noms or campaigning threads and it probably got buried, but for all you new Fireside converts this is their most emo song imo:

that rainer maria record has some of my favorite lyrics ever on it

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 16:25 (seven years ago) link

also dear you was a very crucial record for me in college even though i prefer the sprawl bivouac

The amazing thing about Brand New Eyes is it's somehow not even Paramore's best album.

It's also one of the only Rob Cavallo-produced album I can remotely stomach. His tactless, over-compressed, over-loud modern RAWK sound is the embodiment of everything shitty about commercial rock in the '00s, but somehow this album makes it work because Williams takes it almost like a kind of challenge, seeing if she can out bombast it

i went on a blind date once to a rainer maria show

all the older punk bros i know scoff at Dear You, all the younger music bros swear its the best jawbreaker
