I like the promise ring. Does that make me emo?

I think Dashboard and Promise Ring are the emo bridges too far for me― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, March 8, 2017 8:46 AM (eight minutes ago)

this is interesting bc for me personally, promise ring is THE emo band and dashboard is embarrassing kabuki
i'll willfully admit that if the tables were turned and dashboard's debut were released in '96 and promise ring's in 2000 i would probably feel the opposite.
― gr8080, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:01 (seven years ago) link
and speaking of post-2000 blindspots... holy shit this fireside album!
― gr8080, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:02 (seven years ago) link
I just really hate the promise ring's vocals for some reason, idk maybe I'll get past it like I have with literally every other personal emo roadblock ever lol
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:03 (seven years ago) link
I listened to the Los Campesinos album but it was a bit of a slog tbh. I enjoyed the Dashboard album but it was a late cut. I've always had the impression that Promise Ring were cringey-emo but I loved 'Nothing Feels Good'. I'm guessing it will be pretty high.

I'm glad I don't give a shit about genre purity so I can take some credit for Sleep and Release and Young Machetes placing

Yay, Los Campesinos! One of the most wordy albums I've listened to. Some many great lyrics on that one.

Listening to fireside. Reminds me a bit of Commander Venus/Bright Eyes. But I like it so faralso nobody nommed Commander Venus?
― Odysseus, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:21 (seven years ago) link
btw i always thought of romance is boring as the beginning of the end for los campesinos but everyone's enthusiasm on the campaigning thread made me revisit it, and now i think it's their best album, all of the combustibility of the previous two records but magnified 100x

I'm listening to it again today and it's quite brilliant, sorry for not shutting up about Fireside I'll listen to everything else soon enough

Yeah, I can see that (regarding Romance Is Boring). Though I think their later albums are also pretty good (haven't heard the new one yet, but loved the first single).
Fireside later on, 2003, released a more meat and potatoes rock album called Get Shot, which I also kinda like but never revisited (and is nowhere near as goos as Elite - they really dropped the ball). Anyone familiar with that one? I saw them live during that era and distinctly remember a very poorly attended tuesday evening show in Vera, Groningen. They broke up after that tour i believe.

Going to dig out all my issues of Skyscraper I imported from the states to see if there's any good articles on some of these bands.

Marty, are you from Groningen?

Where do you go after releasing an 'emo' album with a 12-minute krautrock workout in the middle?

fun emo fact: I went on a date in Ottawa with a girl who freaked out that I knew who the Hotelier were, we bonded over shared emo loves, had what seemed to be a v nice time, and then I never saw her again until a few months later when she was out walking with some dude she was definitely dating. the end

my issue with home is that the recording itself is not great but: those songs
― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:47 (seven years ago) link
to make the most banal point ever, I like the raw sound and think it perfectly suits the rawness of the EMOTIONS
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:59 (seven years ago) link
idk when the mix is reduced to bass and drums in "in framing" and the bass sounds like it's being played in another room, it's mostly distracting, not raw

Hi, another dutch northerner and Elite fan calling in :) Haven't listened to it in 10+ years but will put it on tonight. It's sort of an anomaly (and definitely the peak) in their oeuvre.
