So happy to see two more instant Fireside converts. It's like that scene in High Fidelity where John Cusack goes, "Let's sell a couple of Beta Band albums," and the moment he puts the record on in the store a customer wants to buy it.

Going through the Aereogramme discography this morning because it's been far too long. I never heard their Michael Jackson cover before:

They also did a brilliant 'In the Fishtank' session with Isis, which I had completely forgotten about.

Someone on the Britpop thread wanted to do a poll on the Glasgow scene. I'd be so up for that.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 11:44 (seven years ago) link

Are you from Glasgow?

Odysseus, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 11:46 (seven years ago) link

No, Holland :)

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 11:50 (seven years ago) link

that Fireside record is very cool incidentally

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 13:15 (seven years ago) link

in typical fashion I now feel a bit bad (ok not actually that bad) for getting folks on the juno train for this poll cause on re-re-relistening I'm now convinced only the 1st album is emo "enough", the 2nd is mor like every new guitar genre of the last 25 years thrown in a magical blender

idk the first four songs on the that album (after the intro) are kind of an opening emo salvo before the album drifts into abstraction. it counts i think!

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 13:18 (seven years ago) link

No, Holland :)

― ArchCarrier,

well dont go claiming Lanarkshire bands for Glasgow then!!! ;)

Odysseus, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 13:28 (seven years ago) link

Haha, oops!

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 13:36 (seven years ago) link

But Wikipedia says

Aereogramme were a Scottish alternative rock band from Glasgow, formed in 1998, consisting of Craig B. (vocals, guitar), Iain Cook (guitar, programming), Campbell McNeil (bass) and Martin Scott (drums). Prior to their split in 2007, the band released four studio albums.

I know, never trust the internet, but you are the internet too, Odysseus.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 13:41 (seven years ago) link

no, i didnt mean them, i meant all those Bellshill bands that would get nommed for a glasgow poll and the delgados/mogwai who are from motherwell/hamilton

xp Wait, what? You want to exclude Mogwai from a Glasgow scene poll because they grew up 15 miles from the city?

Big LOL at that picture.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 13:52 (seven years ago) link

Realised I've still never heard an entire Dashboard Confessional album - I'll listen to whatever places highest.

Leaves Turn Inside You is a good record I used to absolutely love but it's another I didn't feel quite right voting for.

i'm seeing these guys tnite!

Mordy, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 14:17 (seven years ago) link

this poll reinforces the fact that i have no idea what emo is (bedhead, really?)

I'm not sure anyone does. I like music with complex rhythms and dissonant guitars and I like melodic hard rock anthems.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 14:20 (seven years ago) link

never liked 'em really (I saw them open for SFA in NY about...7-9 years ago? and found them super irritating) but I admire any band that far outlives the early hype cycle

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 14:21 (seven years ago) link

tbph i'm seeing them for the opener, i couldn't name a single one of their songs

Mordy, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 14:22 (seven years ago) link

<3 <3 my number 1, pretty much the soundtrack to my angsty late teens, a beautifully emo indie album musically and lyrically.

I think Dashboard and Promise Ring are the emo bridges too far for me

I like the promise ring. Does that make me emo?

― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, March 8, 2017 8:46 AM (eight minutes ago)

this is interesting bc for me personally, promise ring is THE emo band and dashboard is embarrassing kabuki

i'll willfully admit that if the tables were turned and dashboard's debut were released in '96 and promise ring's in 2000 i would probably feel the opposite.

gr8080, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:01 (seven years ago) link

and speaking of post-2000 blindspots... holy shit this fireside album!

gr8080, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:02 (seven years ago) link

I just really hate the promise ring's vocals for some reason, idk maybe I'll get past it like I have with literally every other personal emo roadblock ever lol

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:03 (seven years ago) link

I listened to the Los Campesinos album but it was a bit of a slog tbh. I enjoyed the Dashboard album but it was a late cut. I've always had the impression that Promise Ring were cringey-emo but I loved 'Nothing Feels Good'. I'm guessing it will be pretty high.

album of the year, every year

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 15:09 (seven years ago) link

I'm glad I don't give a shit about genre purity so I can take some credit for Sleep and Release and Young Machetes placing

Yay, Los Campesinos! One of the most wordy albums I've listened to. Some many great lyrics on that one.
