I think it was "So Cold" and "The Sound" that Youtube was giving me.

Dashboard Confessional sounds like the most emo band of them all

never heard them!

I've already fallen in love w Lifetime thanks guys :D

as far as random discoveries go that angel hair record is pretty entertaining jehu impression.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:11 (seven years ago) link

Isn't it more extreme than Drive Like Jehu? DLJ played at 45 maybe?

Catching up with this now as well. It's so nice! The vocalist reminds me of the Less Than Jake guy. I don't mean that in a bad way.

this poll reinforces the fact that i have no idea what emo is (bedhead, really?) -- i didn't nominate anything, just voted for the shit i liked

good rollout so far tho! (mrs mordy's emo boy comment is a fave.) count me among those who tried blood brothers several times to no avail

mookieproof, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:30 (seven years ago) link

bedhead is the most wtf so far when it comes to emoness

yeah something like that, a hardcore band that heard jehu and tried to imitate that sound

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:34 (seven years ago) link

all you blood brothers fans should also check out the Past Lives album and the first Jaguar Love album (but for the love of God stay far away from the second!), they were their equivalent of the Sparta/Mars Volta split

I love it so much, the production is a bit flat but they had such a cool sound, and it's wild to hear johnny give'r on such vibrant, poppy songs

My #4 has already placed, as well as two other things in my top 20 (Saetia and Very Emergency). My #4 was The Swiss Army Romance, which for my money was easily the best DC album.

Crimes is one of my favorite albums of all time, truly an amazing piece of work. I still haven't really gotten into Young Machetes. Maybe I'll give it another shot tonight. I didn't vote for any Blood Brothers because I'd never thought of them as emo. Same with Refused and Unwound. But that's the interesting part about the way this poll was run, the relative emo-ness of an album seems to influence its ranking.

Rainer Maria should show up. I voted for three of theirs, one in my top 15.

My favorite Lifetime album is the one from the 70s with Tony Williams on it, but I'll give their 90s albums another shot.

the ilx emo poll: the greatest juno discovery thread of all time

― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Tuesday, March 7, 2017 7:34 PM (two hours ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

in typical fashion I now feel a bit bad (ok not actually that bad) for getting folks on the juno train for this poll cause on re-re-relistening I'm now convinced only the 1st album is emo "enough", the 2nd is mor like every new guitar genre of the last 25 years thrown in a magical blender

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 03:30 (seven years ago) link

i hadn't really thought about that. the first album is 100% emo from a thematic standpoint, the second less so but it has that dna more than like 5 things that have already made the countdown.

i really wish juno was on spotify and/or my CDs weren't in storage.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 03:53 (seven years ago) link

I ordered my CDs like two weeks ago but they're still not here yet :( :( :(

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 04:02 (seven years ago) link

yeah it's def more emo than say Refused. interestingly it shares a producer w/ Leaves Turn Inside You

Re: Songs From Under The Cork Tree, it has some key anthemic tracks but imo they don't hit critical capital A anthemic FOB til Infinity (i looooove the Babyface tracks, he understood their theatricality, I mean he turned Thnks Fr The Mmrs into a demented FOB Broadway showtune )

Infinity is when Patrick & Wentz really mindmeld & when the band starts just routinely facemelting

anyway i guess we'll get to that :)

Yoni Loves Chocha (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 04:09 (seven years ago) link

i'm listening to swiss army + the problem w/ it is that with the exception of the title track the best songs on it (screaming + again i go unnoticed) both show up on tpyhctftm - and as better versions! (places' "screaming" has that excellent penultimate elongated "your hair is everywhere" refrain which swiss army's version appears to be missing)

So happy to see two more instant Fireside converts. It's like that scene in High Fidelity where John Cusack goes, "Let's sell a couple of Beta Band albums," and the moment he puts the record on in the store a customer wants to buy it.

Going through the Aereogramme discography this morning because it's been far too long. I never heard their Michael Jackson cover before:

They also did a brilliant 'In the Fishtank' session with Isis, which I had completely forgotten about.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 11:36 (seven years ago) link

Someone on the Britpop thread wanted to do a poll on the Glasgow scene. I'd be so up for that.

idk the first four songs on the that album (after the intro) are kind of an opening emo salvo before the album drifts into abstraction. it counts i think!

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 13:18 (seven years ago) link

No, Holland :)

― ArchCarrier,

well dont go claiming Lanarkshire bands for Glasgow then!!! ;)

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 13:36 (seven years ago) link

But Wikipedia says

Aereogramme were a Scottish alternative rock band from Glasgow, formed in 1998, consisting of Craig B. (vocals, guitar), Iain Cook (guitar, programming), Campbell McNeil (bass) and Martin Scott (drums). Prior to their split in 2007, the band released four studio albums.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 13:41 (seven years ago) link

no, i didnt mean them, i meant all those Bellshill bands that would get nommed for a glasgow poll and the delgados/mogwai who are from motherwell/hamilton

xp Wait, what? You want to exclude Mogwai from a Glasgow scene poll because they grew up 15 miles from the city?

Big LOL at that picture.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 13:52 (seven years ago) link

Realised I've still never heard an entire Dashboard Confessional album - I'll listen to whatever places highest.

Leaves Turn Inside You is a good record I used to absolutely love but it's another I didn't feel quite right voting for.

this poll reinforces the fact that i have no idea what emo is (bedhead, really?)

I'm not sure anyone does. I like music with complex rhythms and dissonant guitars and I like melodic hard rock anthems.

never liked 'em really (I saw them open for SFA in NY about...7-9 years ago? and found them super irritating) but I admire any band that far outlives the early hype cycle

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 14:21 (seven years ago) link

tbph i'm seeing them for the opener, i couldn't name a single one of their songs

<3 <3 my number 1, pretty much the soundtrack to my angsty late teens, a beautifully emo indie album musically and lyrically.
