This is lower than I expected - good record!

Also I have to admit, Say Anything are a real blind spot for me.

good to know that i'm at least as good at drums as the moss icon guy

I gave this a vote but I think it might be the drumming that holds me back from loving them as much as I 'should'? I always feel like they should be tighter (or else more loose and free/noisy).

Jersey's best Dancers and Hello Bastards both would have made my top ten.

i voted for a different tbs record but tbh this one has it all

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 16:46 (seven years ago) link

it's not particularly recorded well and the songwriting is pretty disorganized and they would make way better records than this and yet it's so special

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 16:47 (seven years ago) link

yeah I never listened to much TBS-esque music because those first two TBS albums did it all so perfectly. Never had any need for imitators (or, tbh, any more TBS albums)

Evan R, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 17:02 (seven years ago) link

haha GET IN THERE!

Campaigning, even in the last hours works folks!

Odysseus, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 17:03 (seven years ago) link

A board I used to post on thought this album was one of the best records of the 00s. They weren't wrong.

tt and I voted for this on the strength of one listen

is this black metal?

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 17:07 (seven years ago) link

It sounded good on the basis of one listen, although I didn't vote for it.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 17:08 (seven years ago) link

― Lebro v. Wade (Spottie),

hah, no.

First released in 2002, here is the original description of the album:

City of Caterpillar's debut LP is finally here. The 7 tracks spread out over 44 minutes sway with hypnotic fury and a nervous energy and passion lacking in a lot of bands these days. I personally have been waiting for this record since my former band played with them a couple years ago and they totally schooled us. It was one of those shows where you can't even think straight after and you want to stop playing guitar after they play because you'll never get it as right as they have. I eagerly checked my mailbox for the master once it had been recorded and once it arrived it proceeded to own my stereo for a month straight.

City of Caterpillar have been touring like crazy leaving many wondering, "where the fuck did these guys come from?" Sure the members play or have played in a number of well known and seminal bands, but listing them is redundant as City of Caterpillar have come into their own without riding on the coattails of previous projects. It's obvious they're not new to writing and playing as their live shows and recordings are consistently too strong to simply be attributed to an accident or luck. This is the record that will make even the most jaded hipster take notice and start listening to hardocre again (whether we want them to our not)

Odysseus, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 17:13 (seven years ago) link

never heard of this

gr8080, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 17:17 (seven years ago) link

"Hey! They're not part of it" made me choke on my coffee.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 17:18 (seven years ago) link

city of caterpillar is some hardcore ass shit

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 17:21 (seven years ago) link

Is this the band that sounds like Explosions in the Sky but with Henry Rollins on vocals?

ArchCarrier, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 17:21 (seven years ago) link

lmao i was literally gonna say those words just now

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 17:23 (seven years ago) link

Not that that's a bad thing, mind

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 17:25 (seven years ago) link

If anybody likes City of Caterpillar then they should check out Malady. It's one of the guys from them + the singer from PG 99.
I think Robotic Empire reissued it this year

or you can listen/but digitally here https://thearchivistlabel.bandcamp.com/album/malady

Odysseus, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 17:26 (seven years ago) link

xp - Haha, what?! Must be true then. And no, not a bad thing at all - I really like this.

ArchCarrier, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 17:31 (seven years ago) link

oh wow i know we're all talking about city of caterpillar but i just want to say:

a) lifetime album is huge fun and
b) bedhead is not what i expected at all and it's v quite lovely

Mordy, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 17:33 (seven years ago) link

I was in the middle of 'When was the last time...' and was like damn this sounds like explosions in the sky w hardcore vocals (so not exactly but close enough) xp

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 17:34 (seven years ago) link

yeah hadnt heard that lifetime record feels like ive been missing out on something
