two months pass...

no real updates here, the artzie channel still churns out videos that regularly settle in the 50k-100k range on plays, and the biggest future funk song has surpassed 3 million views:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ET6657PH9gQ

kind of curious if anything is gonna happen w/ this or its just gonna die out or its gonna go on forever unchanged

future funk died when they started adding shit vocals to everything

clouds, Friday, 19 May 2017 03:31 (six years ago) link

but it was a ripoff of french touch to begin with so

clouds, Friday, 19 May 2017 03:32 (six years ago) link

French touch was a ripoff of Chicago house to begin with so

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 19 May 2017 18:35 (six years ago) link

have you heard any??

clouds, Monday, 22 May 2017 15:50 (six years ago) link

yes

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 22 May 2017 20:52 (six years ago) link

french touch was a ripoff of chicago house

this is not correct

the late great, Monday, 22 May 2017 21:47 (six years ago) link

[thinker emoji] how not

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 22 May 2017 21:52 (six years ago) link

ripoff is much too strong of a word, i think. early french touch music has a warmth and pronounced downtempo / lounge influence that chicago house doesn't. early 90s chicago filter house has a jacking trackiness to the drums that french touch doesn't. they just sound different, and listening to something like daft punk's 95 essential mix you wouldn't confuse one for the other (even though the sounds are sympathetic and compatible and mix well). i will grant that toward the late 90s as the styles evolved they began to converge more and more, and chicago house was obvously a big influence on french touch. but a ripoff, no. not even what i would call an imitation.

this future funk stuff on the other hand ... i'm not sure if i'd even call it french touch influenced so much as daft punk influenced, and specifically "discovery" influenced ... i think lots of stuff on this thread would fit seamlessly on "discovery" and maybe that's the point?

the late great, Monday, 22 May 2017 22:01 (six years ago) link

they are both big genres though so you can find exceptions to the rule ... thinking of the very ruffest french tracks, stuff like bangalter's "what to do". that track in particular i guess i could see a case for it being a ripoff of the chicago track style. but i don't think "what to do" is what people have in mind when they're talking about french touch. i also have a much harder time thinking of chicago tracks that sound like french tracks.

the late great, Monday, 22 May 2017 22:09 (six years ago) link

i meant daft punk 97 essential mix, not 95

the late great, Monday, 22 May 2017 22:12 (six years ago) link

maybe though the extent to which you perceive french touch to be a ripoff of chicago or future funk to be a ripoff of french touch is one of those things that has as mucb to do with the listener as the text

the late great, Monday, 22 May 2017 22:19 (six years ago) link

idk ask any chicago house producer & they dont seem to see that much of a gulf between the styles lol

i also think its a bit reductive to say all this stuff would fit in on discovery ... theres way more use of japanese music & lyrics in this stuff

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 22 May 2017 22:20 (six years ago) link

(much of which was of course rip-offs of american music itself but )

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 22 May 2017 22:20 (six years ago) link

"any" chicago house producer? you've asked them all, i take it?

the late great, Monday, 22 May 2017 22:22 (six years ago) link

sorry, just being snarky

the late great, Monday, 22 May 2017 22:25 (six years ago) link

well, i find it hard to believe anybody could fail to distinguish between a french house track and a chicago house track, but like i said, maybe that has to do more with me than the music itself

and i admit i don't really know future funk well enough to make pronouncements on it ... my knowledge of it is strictly from skimming the tracks on this thread

on a somewhat unrelated note you should check out this comp

http://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/va-light-wave-today-tomorrow-cd/EM.1137CD.html

the late great, Monday, 22 May 2017 22:28 (six years ago) link

i think a lot of ppl here are just bitter about daft punk getting all this acclaim & the grammies & all that shit while they're still back in chicago communities playing for locals if they're lucky

Ugggh I hate this music. It's mostly just the choice of name since years back we started a little music forum on a site that shall go unnamed (starts with R, full of haters) that we called Future Funk Airlines. It was mostly meant as a cheeky allusion to Beats In Space etc. So now we have these kids popping in dropping their vaporwave future funk turds on us, idk I'm honestly having a hard time not taking it personally that this otherwise easily forgettable subgenre took our name.

My internet REALLY sucks so it would be a massive effort to dig thru all the rec's here to find anything passable, anyone who generally has good taste in music feel up to highlighting anything in particular for me? Cheers. (By good taste I basically mean whatever Fact/Resident Advisor rates. Yeah that's how I roll.)

viborg, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 00:49 (six years ago) link

I also had a quick dread today, seeing some 'future funk' crap in another forum, that this would be the next big thing and totally come to dominate popular EDM this year.

pure sugar rush, i don't care, i love it right now. the cheap/disposable discovery rip offs anyway.

this stuff doesn't sound like it was built for club systems.

Future Funk will not dominate over EDM because it's just a rehash of French House and that wasn't that big in the mainstream to begin with.

Is EDM even making the charts anymore? Last time I checked they were dominated by dancehall pop and tropical house and moomba and trap and reggaeton. No EDM. There's Bruno Mars doing his Chromeo thing... it's funky sort of but not future funky.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Tuesday, 23 May 2017 04:34 (six years ago) link

I thought EDM just meant 'bad electronic music'.

lol who cares?

Is EDM even making the charts anymore? Last time I checked they were dominated by dancehall pop and tropical house and moomba and trap and reggaeton. No EDM.

The only notable exception I can think of was Calvin Harris's This Is What You Came For from last year.

There's also The Chainsmokers, but they're not really EDM at this point, I think. I actually don't know, because I've avoided listening to anything by them all this time.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 23 May 2017 15:08 (six years ago) link

I don't think Future Funk is going to get EDM level success but it's not because it's a rehash - EDM was pretty blatantly a rehash too.

Are there any good City Pop compilations out?

Maybe should belong in the Japanese 80s funk thread but it’s being marketed as “future funk” for some reason

I read a thing recently where he was like "I put my first mix up on Bandcamp and it blew up. I still don't have any idea why."

I guess I can't comprehend how that's possible?

I mean, I live in the age of the internet ... I get it. I'm just trying to figure out if there was some vaporwave Reddit thread where this guy took off or something.

Maybe there's no answer.

just caught up with Dan Mason, looks like he's starting to make original music that's very much in the George Clanton vein, with his newest album coming out on the 100% Electronica label

this is kinda like when DFA would sign various bands who would inevitably come out sounding like LCD Soundsystem

anyway, dig the new sound Dan
