i agree - and weirdly the worse he gets the more people keep hyping him. that last contract was fucking criminal - he's still dining off it.

the more certain people keep hyping him anyway.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Thursday, 23 February 2017 23:08 (seven years ago) link

He has won the England Player of the Year award four times, in 2008, 2009, 2014 and 2015. With 51 goals in 109 international caps, Rooney is England's all-time record goalscorer and fourth most-capped player.

Ppl who treat this as the defence as opposed to admitting it as the problem are imbeciles

But really, this. But wheel in all his stats for united too. Clipboard player, fuck off.

I love the fact that he's totally irrelevant to this Utd team now

Still though, at the press conference before the St. Etienne game 90% of the hacks' questions were about Rooney. They just can't quit him

Number None, Thursday, 23 February 2017 23:15 (seven years ago) link

I've a pet theory that Moyes and Rooney were a poisonous goodbye from fergie but twas Moyes signed him to that contract, if Moyes had anything to do with it, or if Moyes was in a position to do anything but at the time. There's a theory in there somewhere tho def

any idea that he has taken up the xavi role or something and that explains why there is a such a huge drop-off after 2013/2014 is bullshit obv. he just is a player whose primary attribute was consistent attacking output which he no longer provides.

Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 23 February 2017 23:43 (seven years ago) link

taken up the sausage role iirc

Everton have been given royal treatment since they arrived in the East African state.

The wild chants for Rooney, along with stomping performances by Maasai cultural dancers, created a spectacle to behold.

'A little reducer'

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

Martin Keown

Former Arsenal defender on BBC One

I think Wayne Rooney is saying (to the referee) 'I got there as quick as I could', but it was very late and it is a painful one for Joe Gomez. A little reducer from Rooney early on. I hope he doesn't regret that.

No lie there.

rooney gets even worse and the same cult of morons around him continues to boost. before the match tonight bbc live text, essentially rooney's political base, said "if only everton had two rooneys" - i think it was shearer. it all sort of makes sense as the language around the fa cup becomes more and more brexit, though would prefer if liverpool everton didn't get dragged into some pride of britain affair.

seems england or english football just won't give up on this useless moron - i swear the last two everton games i've watched on motd he's given the ball away for a goal, and yet there's some desperate narrative that needs to act like the world would be a better place if only we had 7.6 billion wayne rooneys, all chuntering into each other.

anyway - the atmos seemed good - and welcome vvd. kinda hoping his performance and goal and general ego combined with his productive hectoring of karius might suggest one player in this team has a backbone as well as talent.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Saturday, 6 January 2018 01:14 (six years ago) link

Good post. And of course it was Shearer stanning for Rooney; he's his mirror image in today's football, TWP could be Shearer's son. Both are essentially Brexit players: entirely opportunist, morally bankrupt, infantile and hyper-capitalist. Always first in line to swap embodying one unpopular opinion for the next. I'm sure they'll have a right laugh at the next debauched wedding of some footballing millionaire dummy they'll both attend. (Hope they'll grab a cab afterwards instead of driving themselves. For other people's sake.)

have to admit that VvD at Liverpool is genuinely exciting. I placed a bet on VvD scoring tonight. Nothing to pride myself about, but he's the unique kind of player you kind of expect to score on his debut for Liverpool. 84m for VvD isn't a lot if he's a good fit and the fans grow to love him. He's already proved worth the money more than Bale has managed in years and years at Madrid. If it's a perfect fit, it's a perfect fit. That's invaluable nowadays.

I'm trying to get into baseball. As in seriously trying, reading the threads, the books, the websites. I watched most of last season and most of the play-offs, and pretty much thoroughly enjoyed it. But I just don't feel I can *connect* to it like people who grew up with it. I feel like I'm way behind you guys all the time, which is frustrating.

The whole transfer and trading stuff ~is a mystery to me~ for one. In football, club A just buys Wayne Rooney from club B for an insane amount of money, and he'll still be shite. It's comforting to know how things play out. I'm trying w/ baseball, believe, but it's not easy.

♫ very clever with maracas.jpg ♫ (Le Bateau Ivre), Saturday, 6 January 2018 03:01 (six years ago) link

When you saw you "watched most of last season", were you watching one team in particular or just random games? Because I think most people connect to baseball by being a fan of a team first more than the game in general, especially during the regular season.

Screamin' Jay Gould (The Yellow Kid), Saturday, 6 January 2018 03:40 (six years ago) link

xp yeah i deeply appreciate (while also suspecting they're entirely bullshit) your moral/political takes on sport, but it's tough to master other idioms. bobby spirals is perhaps a savant
