not really feeling the new fat joe/remy that much
i mean it's pretty good but feels a bit directionless
new Roc Marciano - Rosebudd's Revenge is some great #conservativerapcoalition bait, fucking love him
with him, Ka, Westside Gunn, Conway the Machine, Your Old Droog, Meyhem Lauren, etc it's a good time to be a fan of boring street rap, i'm living good

vic/chris are the best. i posted that bacon vid upthread somewhere. new project out soon i think
― Spottie, Thursday, 23 February 2017 21:06 (seven years ago) link
W g herbo his new tape this year is his best overal project I think... "kill shit" from 2012 is a classic also
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 23 February 2017 21:07 (seven years ago) link
The new tape is called "strictly for my fans".

― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 23 February 2017 21:08 (seven years ago) link
Gonna counter: "Strictly For My Fans" is good, but "Fazoland" is far and away his best project. That whole tape is sensational.

"I'm Rollin" from Ballin Like I'm Kobe is still my favorite thing he's ever done, though I haven't heard the new tape yet.

"I'm Rollin" is so good. 4 My Fans has some great standouts—the outro is fantastic—but I don't think any of his other tapes have felt as complete and hung together as well as his first one
― Evan R, Thursday, 23 February 2017 21:39 (seven years ago) link
beats on the new roc marci are meh...

also there's a new starlito tape : https://starlito.bandcamp.com/album/manifest-destiny
― ANU (sisilafami), Thursday, 23 February 2017 22:19 (seven years ago) link
Xxxpost New Westside is good but really short, half is just instrumentals, more like a maxi single or short ep than a real tape
― blonde redheads have more fun (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 23 February 2017 22:24 (seven years ago) link
got it, i'll check it out

This Joe Gifted & Frontstreet track sounds like Frank O going to ATL without Calvin Harris stepping in between. I kinda love it.

You can definitely hear his influences fading in and out of his voice, lol, but it's a good song and performance.

the roc marciano album is good, but yeah sometimes the beats just seem off ...
also this is increasingly true, especially with dudes that are operating on a lower budget, but there's so many rap records now that just sound like shit, roc's vocals are mixed too low on some tracks, and could really use some EQing on others, like there's this whole generation of producers that really are just beatmakers used to sending ppl beats through dropbox and then getting a vocal track back, they don't really know how to make records like a dude like DJ Quik or Organized Noise or Timbaland or whoever....really frustrating, i remember some Your Old Droog track last year that was like jesus fuck did anyone listen to how hard these vocals are clipping for no reason?
― blonde redheads have more fun (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 27 February 2017 17:19 (seven years ago) link
yeah agree. i have my beef with the sound on a lot of the popular 808 heavy producers too. Probably why Mustard n them brought in Quik to finish YGs biggest hit, fill out the sound. http://hiphopdx.com/news/id.39927/title.dj-quik-goes-in-on-yg-jeezy-snoop-dogg-stampede-management-over-my-hitta-credit#

Xpost, probably more just the decline of budgets and the studio system. There aren't many guys like a Mike Dean anymore who can have a career in pro studios....I really loved the Odd Tape last year will check new Oddisee

Pro studios aside, a producer who can make great creative beats is not necessarily the same person who is able to do a great mixing job on it + the vocals, but often ends up having to be that person.
― change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 28 February 2017 16:59 (seven years ago) link
what is it with contemporary tv music broadcasts - why is the sound so flat and unengaging? sounds straight off the mixing board or smth, no reverb, no sense of space... and these are good musicians! I'm thinking a Zoom recorder in the studio would've done a better job

sorry that wasn't correct—he wasn't annoying, i found his production choices annoying, the "its dance music but he raps!" angle was forced imo and none of his songs were as good as vic mensa's one

apparently most of those tunes were songs members of the (largely non-pro) cast were into, and Arnold chose to incorporate them, some became kinda "anthems" for the cast & crew (who would also have motel parties similar to those in the movie)

idk its like Rae Sremmurd goes R&B, electronic pop w/ a sprinkling of vague rock-ness that feels like a spiritual parallel w/ early NERD
