six months pass...

So, for whatever reason, I never checked out But You Caint Use My Phone. Listening first time now, and wow, it's pretty great.

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Friday, 10 November 2017 18:33 (six years ago) link

are any of her albums as good as the first? I love the first one but I've never given the rest enough time

akm, Friday, 10 November 2017 18:34 (six years ago) link

Well then I know what you damn well need to do with your weekend, friend.

And the answer is a resounding yes. As good and even better. She's amazing.

Fresh Toast (Old Lunch), Friday, 10 November 2017 18:37 (six years ago) link

Yup, there's not a bum album in the whole lineup. (I might not be the control group on this question tho.)

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Friday, 10 November 2017 18:57 (six years ago) link

Mama's Gun is fantastic. It's probably on my shortlist of all time favorites, honestly.

The only one I'd say is an outright misfire would be Worldwide Underground. But I haven't listened to it in a decade, so my mind could be changed on the matter.

It's not a misfire, but it's her most ephemeral (i.e. I look at song titles and don't remember how they go).

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 10 November 2017 19:08 (six years ago) link

I still love WU and looking at the titles brings back instant hooks (esp. Back in the Day, The Grind, Danger, and especially the jam that is Love of My Life Worldwide).

This is legit one of the most baffling ILM questions I've ever read. I don't mean to yell but YES THEY ARE, LISTEN TO THEM

the Hannah Montana of the Korean War (DJP), Friday, 10 November 2017 19:12 (six years ago) link

Her debut is still only her third or fourth best.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 10 November 2017 19:12 (six years ago) link

Weather Underground meanders, but it's worth it for "Back in the Day" and "I Want You" alone.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Friday, 10 November 2017 19:15 (six years ago) link

oops

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Friday, 10 November 2017 19:15 (six years ago) link

lol

Yeah, I'd wager the general consensus is that Worlwide Underground is the least essential but it's still pretty damn good.

Fresh Toast (Old Lunch), Friday, 10 November 2017 19:21 (six years ago) link

When I heard Wings' "Arrow Through Me" a decade ago, a friend and I wondered who the first R&B or hip-hop act would sample its magical hook.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 10 November 2017 19:23 (six years ago) link

uh, it came out garbled, but you know what I mean

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 10 November 2017 19:23 (six years ago) link

I still haven't warmed to the mixtape tbh, but I know someday it'll click like the rest.

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Friday, 10 November 2017 19:25 (six years ago) link

Worldwide underground is a lot of fun.

Top 3 imo

NA PT 2 - mamas gun - NA 1

Week of Wonders (Ross), Friday, 10 November 2017 21:00 (six years ago) link

i LOOOOVE the Caint Use My Phone mixtape!

kurt schwitterz, Friday, 10 November 2017 21:18 (six years ago) link

All her albums are brilliant. Even WU has I Want You, which is sublime

"Taste's very strange!" (stevie), Saturday, 11 November 2017 16:27 (six years ago) link

i've been listening to NA 1 and 2 nonstop recently. "Gone Baby, Don't Be Long" hasn't been mentioned in 6 years ott, somehow. it is one of the best songs OF ALL TIME

Karl Malone, Saturday, 11 November 2017 18:49 (six years ago) link

i really liked But You Can't Use My Phone a lot, i should listen to it more. great rainy night album.

brimstead, Sunday, 12 November 2017 00:25 (six years ago) link

there've been surprisingly few Erykah polls it seems.

piscesx, Sunday, 12 November 2017 01:33 (six years ago) link

My top 3: amerykah pt. 2, amerykah pt. 1, worldwide underground

Probably the #1 artist in the world who needs to make more music

een, Sunday, 12 November 2017 02:17 (six years ago) link

Amerykah Part 1 is probably the best album of the 2000s that isn't Voodoo imo.

monotony, Sunday, 12 November 2017 03:43 (six years ago) link

Worldwide Underground is her party album, which means that from some angles and in certain contexts it’s actually her best album.

Tim F, Sunday, 12 November 2017 04:15 (six years ago) link

love of my life IS a party jam

Week of Wonders (Ross), Sunday, 12 November 2017 04:22 (six years ago) link

erykah hasn't released a bad album or even one that's less than great iirc

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Monday, 13 November 2017 03:53 (six years ago) link

but you can't use my phone is great

k3vin k., Monday, 13 November 2017 04:14 (six years ago) link

It probably shouldn't (because its sentiments have never not applied really) but 'Twinkle' does feel tangibly more prescient nine years later.

nashwan, Monday, 13 November 2017 12:46 (six years ago) link

Worldwide Underground is a bit of a step down from the rest of her discog, but everything else is straight-up classic, particularly the New Amerykahs.

Cain't Use My Phone was awesome, if a little slight, with more obvious filler than any of her proper albums. But the great stuff was totally amazing.

bodak horseman (voodoo chili), Monday, 13 November 2017 14:23 (six years ago) link

I've always thought D'Angelo was a bit overrated (still great!) and Badu consistently underrated. Particularly, yes, the two New Amerykahs. People lose their shit over Voodoo, but these albums are just as ambitious and successful. And Mama's Gun, for that matter.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 November 2017 14:30 (six years ago) link

oh I'll say it:

Badu >>>>>>>>>>>> D'Angelo

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 November 2017 14:36 (six years ago) link

That said, I saw a Badu show once where she spent an eternity rolling around on a pilates ball.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 November 2017 14:42 (six years ago) link

I don't see that as a mitigating factor

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Monday, 13 November 2017 14:48 (six years ago) link

Badu = Bjork >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> anyone else, basically

Anne of the Thousand Gays (Eric H.), Monday, 13 November 2017 14:48 (six years ago) link

Say what u must. Dialogue is cool . I invite it. But please do me a favor if you can , Black & Jewish Twitter, just don't use the word "problematic " any more. 😂Y'all using that too much . 🙄.. oh and read the article.

erykah otm

marcos, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 19:12 (six years ago) link

the article is awful tho

khat person (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 19:18 (six years ago) link

call out culture is bullshit and yes people should stop calling things problematic on twitter but if you can read that interview and not come away from it never wanting to hear anything erykah badou says ever again then youre nuts

khat person (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 19:19 (six years ago) link

the interviewer was dumb i thought

erykah was erykah

the little annotations they did were really stupid

marcos, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 19:20 (six years ago) link

idk what was different about her in that interview compared to any other interview she's done in the past 20 years?

btw i think about when she said "u on twitter tho, oppressin me" all the time

marcos, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 19:21 (six years ago) link

following up a bit about her support for farrakhan and accusations of anti-semitism with "hitler was a wonderful painter" while speaking to a jew is a bit gauche

khat person (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 19:30 (six years ago) link

STFU erykah and make some good new music

(•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 19:31 (six years ago) link

hitler had real issues with perspective, unsurprisingly

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 19:32 (six years ago) link

i thought it was funny tbh, esp when she immediately follows up w/ "okay, he was a terrible painter"

marcos, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 19:34 (six years ago) link

In general, Erykah Badu has given more to me in my lifetime than the entirety of social media comment threads.

Tarr Yang Preminger Argento Carpenter (Eric H.), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 20:21 (six years ago) link

I thought the article was great and the interviewer came off much worse than she did.

If you claim to see some good in every human, Hitler is logical person to mention as an extreme you go to. She wasn't thinking of the larger scope or people cherry-picking this bit. Just backing up her claim.
