Yikes, "Sky Walker" is not good.

self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Thursday, 24 August 2017 17:08 (six years ago) link

Sounds like he was going for some kind of Rae Sremmurd vibe and coming up short. Will this be on the album? I hope not...

MikoMcha, Friday, 25 August 2017 05:40 (six years ago) link

barf this is awful

yeah, not enjoyable.

can I unhear this

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 25 August 2017 15:00 (six years ago) link

obv this is far from an ideal miguel single but i don't hate it. it actually could fit pretty seamlessly into the dreamy middle section of kaleidoscope dream.

also i like wildheart and defended it at the time, but i'll be happy if he bends back towards radio music instead of following his rock star muse even further down that rabbit hole. despite this song i think it will be good for him... he made better music when he was trying to get played on R&B radio

J0rdan S., Friday, 25 August 2017 15:16 (six years ago) link

AIWIY is his best album

k3vin k., Friday, 25 August 2017 15:34 (six years ago) link

This could easily have fitted on Kaleidoscope Dream and (especially) on Wildheart, it doesn't feel like such a radical left turn for me. Travis Scott should be nowhere near it obviously, but it's otherwise fine.

Matt DC, Friday, 25 August 2017 15:46 (six years ago) link

travis scott sounds good on it i think... it nods at his sound w/o being a direct rip off. my main problem is that i can't credibly buy miguel singing about his haters

J0rdan S., Friday, 25 August 2017 15:59 (six years ago) link

It's not the subject matter I have a problem with; it's the intrinsic lameness. He sounds like a colossal doofus

Evan R, Friday, 25 August 2017 16:00 (six years ago) link

also I he could tone down the boyishness and maybe turn up the grown-man factor a bit. like the song is this close to having a line about how warm coco feels good in his tum tum

Evan R, Friday, 25 August 2017 16:03 (six years ago) link

lol oh dear. it is not completely awful but it is very... meandering? and yes goofy. sounds like an interlude that shouldn't have been extended to a full-length song.

he made better music when he was trying to get played on R&B radio

i agree with this!

dyl, Friday, 25 August 2017 16:13 (six years ago) link

I wish he recorded more R&B and not these pieces of chewy toffee.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 25 August 2017 16:15 (six years ago) link

im not defending this song exactly (tho i do like it more than you guys) as much as the direction it would indicate he's heading in, which i think is healthy

J0rdan S., Friday, 25 August 2017 16:19 (six years ago) link

imo this makes a nice "welp 2017" bookend to the new taylor swift single

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Friday, 25 August 2017 18:50 (six years ago) link

idk this sounds fine to me. flow is sremmurdish?

flopson, Friday, 25 August 2017 18:58 (six years ago) link

i agree w J0rdan about the direction; wildheart was too rock for me

flopson, Friday, 25 August 2017 19:01 (six years ago) link

I agree with the direction that takes Miguel into taking his shirt off.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 25 August 2017 19:02 (six years ago) link

this would fit in seamlessly among the vibey ballads on the back half of Sremmlife 2 (patti cake, do yoga, swang)

flopson, Friday, 25 August 2017 19:04 (six years ago) link

will not stand for the Sremmlife 2 slander but I agree the rock direction was getting grating. His voice was made for R&B

Evan R, Friday, 25 August 2017 19:07 (six years ago) link

i'm not slandering srem2! i think this song is just fine

flopson, Friday, 25 August 2017 19:13 (six years ago) link

seems fine to me. not amazing but not awful

||||||||, Friday, 25 August 2017 22:53 (six years ago) link

this is great yall trippin

Spottie, Friday, 25 August 2017 22:59 (six years ago) link

Sounds like a blah Miguel track to me (rather than an atrocity).

This single kind of reminds me when Janelle Monae put out Yoga a couple of years ago. It didn't really fit in with what she'd be doing before (musically and quality-wise) and sounded like she wanted to try and desperately get that summer hit. With the Janelle single, it did give her her first solo Billboard entry but thankfully didn't start the campaign for her third album (although I'd just like signs that there will be a third album at this stage). Hopefully Sky Walker isn't anywhere near Miguel's next album. The song in the Snoop clip sounds much more promising.

kitchen person, Sunday, 27 August 2017 17:58 (six years ago) link

Now THIS sucks.

who's MIgue?

Spottie, Thursday, 7 September 2017 16:20 (six years ago) link

Miguel is bad now :(

Evan R, Thursday, 7 September 2017 16:28 (six years ago) link

yeah this one isn't good at all. produced by pop & oak tho. fwiw given that it's 2:30 it seems more like a little teaser thing than something serious.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 7 September 2017 17:25 (six years ago) link

ok this version of "skywalker" is pretty great https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwVwpAjB6vY

also this song is still the shit to me

His new look reminds me of the grownup version of a child actor from "The Cosby Show" or something.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 September 2017 13:49 (six years ago) link

i think the dreads are hot & these arrangements really lean into like the whole neo-soul stoner vibe

J0rdan S., Thursday, 21 September 2017 13:53 (six years ago) link

It's not the dreads so much as the shirt.

I like that "Skywalker" version – more of this, please, not power chords.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 September 2017 14:02 (six years ago) link

"Come Through and Chill" is good and I'm glad he's outgrown his rawk phase, but I'm not really feeling driftless beach bum Miguel at all.

Evan R, Thursday, 21 September 2017 15:34 (six years ago) link

On All I Want Is You and Kaleidoscope Dream (and even the Mischief tape) he was so hungry for the music he was making, he was just fiending for it. Not he seems so indifferent and disengaged. Not into it at all; feels like he's lost his muse and doesn't even care to replace it

Evan R, Thursday, 21 September 2017 15:36 (six years ago) link

i can tell you what his muse is, it's weed

J0rdan S., Thursday, 21 September 2017 16:00 (six years ago) link

I thought his cat was :(

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 September 2017 16:08 (six years ago) link

I guess this confirms "Come Through and Chill" was an album preview.
