Tempted to say 27 is "Ear" by Ng.

xpost yeah #9 seems like it should an obvious one! i'm thinking it's a jazz album that i've seen before somewhere but i'm drawing a blank..
#27 drives me crazy. skipped through multiple pages of sky/cloud themed covers yesterday but no :/

18 is definitely not Urban Hymns, the tops of the trees are completely different.

Not completely. Being "painted" versions, they are a little different. Have to say, "Urban Hymns" would not really belong in this collection, so I'm entirely sanguine about it being something else. Then again, Badly Drawn Boy also sticks out as being unlikely, but there it is.

ok I just did my time in the rym list trenches (● • Dots • ●,Art with Blob, Blot, Blotch, Spot, Point, Stain and........(this is real Art!), Abstract-Minimalist Cover Art) but I didn't come across #9. I'm thinking it's a '50s/'60s jazz or lounge album but beyond that I have no idea. I'm thinking the white text on the black background is the label name/logo but I'm not sure what label it would be.

#9 sure looks like one of those "Persuasive Percussion" type album covers from Enoch Light on the Command label, but I just looked through 750 Discogs thumbnails and didn't see it:

I thought it might be on Arista based on the white vaguely A-shaped blob top left.

nashwan, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 16:39 (seven years ago) link

27 feels like it could be something Grateful Dead/Jefferson Airplane-related. I've looked through tons of Hot Tuna/New Riders/Relix records and nothing so far.

I'm starting to think EAR NG could be EAH NG?

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 21:11 (seven years ago) link

I made this atrocity with Gimp and submitted it to Google Image Search with relevant keywords (like record, album, jazz etc.) and I got nothing. I did find some great-looking jazz posters doing that though.

Are they 8 cyclists with big Chinese hats viewed from above, or balloons?

Mark G, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 22:24 (seven years ago) link

Here was my unsuccessful rabbit hole for #9.

I decided that the white blobs in the upper left said Al Hirt, and that the main graphic was 45 labels made to look like hot air balloons. Then I found that Al Hirt had released a medley of "We Can Fly" and "Up Up and Away" as a single, so I went through every Al Hirt album compilation and then album cover on Discogs. No such luck.

How did you find it?

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 15 February 2017 05:41 (seven years ago) link

I am embarrassed to say that I used Photoshop to cut it out, undistort it to square, then darkened the upper section to look black. That was enough for Google Image Search to get a fingernail hold and find some matches.
What else could I have used those 20 minutes for, though?

attention vampire (MatthewK), Wednesday, 15 February 2017 05:47 (seven years ago) link

Fantastic. Kind of like that sleeve too.

I can find no evidence to support my hope that EAR / NG was a weird alternate cover for "Social Living" by Burning Spear. Shame

willem, Wednesday, 15 February 2017 16:17 (seven years ago) link

well found! impressed that it looks absolutely nothing like what my eyes resolved the small version to

(blue sky, clouds, thought the tentacle tips might be something like a top-down view of a soaring eagle wing-tip, folksy faux-retro poster-style font something like Desdemona, twee as hell... guess I have an overactive imagination)

another one that seems not to fit at all with the others, too. pop-punk from 2007?

andrew m., Wednesday, 15 February 2017 16:51 (seven years ago) link

Wow, kudos! I really thought it was going to be another 50s/60s cover a la the doo wop one; the font looks completely different in miniature.

"Metal Sharks, Not Clouds" is gonna be the name of my new pop punk emo band.

Dinsdale, Wednesday, 15 February 2017 20:10 (seven years ago) link

I didn't think a reverse img search would work but inspired by MatthewK I did an incredibly crude mock-up of the cover in Photoshop - literally splodges of dark blue with some yellow loosely resembling the visible letters. GIS interpreted it as a poster but once I changed the term to album I spotted the Four Year Strong record and immediately thought 'wow so close, it actually has the right colours letters at the end of the words but too different a font - maybe they have an alternative similar cover for it' - after a few more minutes realised the roboshark in the top right was a perfect shape match.

Then I got cocky and tried to do the same for the one under Badly Drawn Boy but the only thing coming up anywhere close is this Pentangle record.
