his Alex Jones impression is insanely good

I think they'd have better luck with an Eric Andre episode.

idk i don't think "minor celebrities talking politics" is a good road to go down for these guys

adam, Tuesday, 7 February 2017 20:00 (seven years ago) link

like that's too close to joe rogan for comfort

adam, Tuesday, 7 February 2017 20:00 (seven years ago) link

yeah I agree with that, inasmuch as they need guests I'd prefer they bring in people from different segments of the left to provide some different angles of commentary

i did enjoy how giddily that princeton historian got into the incel vs volcel dichotomy of history

goole, Tuesday, 7 February 2017 20:14 (seven years ago) link

haha what ep is that

global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 7 February 2017 20:14 (seven years ago) link

I was hoping they'd ask TH whether it was hard to do surreal comedy now that real life is so surreal. Maybe they'd have ask e or 4 times but I'm sure the answer would be interesting.

the thing is there *is* a kernel of interest there in terms of the futility of making fun of Trump, having to find new modes of comedy, etc but instead they...just made fun of Trump for an hour

ep 50. matt karp

Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 7 February 2017 20:25 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, show's less than a year in, and even with the improvements, they still can get overwhelmed or over-awed at a guest. Sometimes this is okay, like with the Adam Curtis ep, and sometimes not.

International House of Hot Takes (kingfish), Tuesday, 7 February 2017 20:28 (seven years ago) link

will did ask the question though, it just didn't go anywhere.

and yeah I agree they should stick to having other journos and political ppl on rather than celebs- Heidecker is a miserable interview, very smug & aloof & not willing to give much.

Hideo Kojima would be a dream guest for Felix, I feel.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 7 February 2017 20:29 (seven years ago) link

I like the Matt Karp ep and want to check out his book.

I think he also pops up on the post-election ep to help bag on people.

International House of Hot Takes (kingfish), Tuesday, 7 February 2017 20:35 (seven years ago) link

does anyone remember which episodes they do Ben Shapiro readings on? besides #68 and #79

flappy bird, Tuesday, 7 February 2017 21:00 (seven years ago) link

Heidecker is just not a terribly interesting interview imo (tho I like him a lot as a performer)

idk i don't think "minor celebrities talking politics" is a good road to go down for these guys

otm. i listened to "the Blob" ep (re the Iran deal/ foreign policy est generally) on the way to work this morning. not a laugh riot but still funny and really informative deep-dive with a knowledgeable and likeable guest.

constitutional crises they fly at u face (will), Tuesday, 7 February 2017 21:11 (seven years ago) link

though if they do go down this road there are certainly folks that would be preferable to Heidecker (of whom I am a fan btw)

constitutional crises they fly at u face (will), Tuesday, 7 February 2017 21:19 (seven years ago) link

i thought this episode was fine and that tim quite enjoyed it and was good natured enough

A view of the recording. The college radio DJ in me is thrashing at their lack of self-monitoring headphones, and that Brendan is still recording everything straight to laptop, which means they're going to keep losing shows.

the new premium episode sounds great, but yeah i saw that pic & wanted to scream at the screen BUY SOME HEADPHONES

flappy bird, Thursday, 9 February 2017 18:27 (seven years ago) link

guys bear with me but i think the sitting around with mics and not treating it like a serious show is...part of their thing idk

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 9 February 2017 19:59 (seven years ago) link

they gotta have the right vibe maaaan

marcos, Thursday, 9 February 2017 20:02 (seven years ago) link

i don't care as long as the episodes sound as good as the one today, and as long as they don't lose another episode because of a fucking cat

flappy bird, Thursday, 9 February 2017 20:17 (seven years ago) link

The Heidecker ep was pretty weak imo, otm about it just turning into an hour of making fun of trump (except for the Shapiro stuff which is always good). Ironically it's Matt of all of them who falls most into the trap of "OMG he's so dumb!" which makes him sound like the average liberal on facebook.

After hearing all the Cernovich/Gorilla Mindset references I really wish they'd do a reading series. I can't bring myself to read it but I want to know what's inside.

I dunno, the dude's twitter is bad enough:

International House of Hot Takes (kingfish), Thursday, 9 February 2017 21:24 (seven years ago) link

the pisspiggranddad interview was interesting but it was pretty weird how they didn't seem interested in following up on his 'lol we don't have child soldiers as long as you don't think 14-year-olds are children' comment

I'm having a hard time with the ppg interview - maybe I'm not ironic enough but the interesting topics are getting buried in Metal Gear jokes and lulz.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 19:31 (seven years ago) link

yeah, they aren't very good at interviews.

I'm starting to get a bit annoyed with the attention these dudes get. Even in relation to other podcasters, like Michael Brooks, the sidekick on the Majority Report, is ten funnier and smarter than these guys put together. Listening to them is like the taste of Mountain Dew on your tongue for an hour.

duped and used by my worst Miss U (President Keyes), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 19:42 (seven years ago) link

Well, that's the stylistic difference, isn't it? Majority Report is Sam Seder's show, so it would come down to how much you dig Adam Seder's stuff.

International House of Hot Takes (kingfish), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 19:48 (seven years ago) link

Adam Sam Seder

International House of Hot Takes (kingfish), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 19:49 (seven years ago) link

Sure. Hes got his own show too. But yeah I like Seder a fiction more than the Chapos

I liked the PPG episode but generally I value the dumb joeks more than the sociopolitical import

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 19:57 (seven years ago) link

i'm just going to assume that they did an episode about the power puff girls

increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 19:59 (seven years ago) link

re: quality of interviews, they vary wildly. the Adam Curtis and Ricky Rawls eps were good. generally I prefer them to stick to journos.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 20:04 (seven years ago) link

And there you go. These guys are just getting a lot of attention because they're both serving a function and offering seen as new and different to a lot of people. Similar to how Air America(incl Sam's show) got plenty of focus when they started broadcasting.

International House of Hot Takes (kingfish), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 20:43 (seven years ago) link

Offering something seen as new and different, I should say

International House of Hot Takes (kingfish), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 20:44 (seven years ago) link

the hour-of-Mountain-Dew comparison is where I'm at too. these guys are just so deeply jaundiced about everything that it starts to drag on my soul listening to them for too long. I followed them on Twitter and then immediately unfollowed the most exhausting guy (I think Will?) and honestly I'm probably gonna cut the cord with the whole outfit before too long.

Scahill's Intercepted is much better at interviews

true. i dug the one with Matthew Karp a lot. been meaning to pick up his book.

i wonder if the whole 'laughing at dads in family court' thing is kind of misguided and not a good look idk

global tetrahedron, Wednesday, 15 February 2017 04:28 (seven years ago) link

A lot of the interviews have been good, I think the problem was probably the guest this time.
