fuck buying tidal for a music video tho

Fluffy Saint-Bernard (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 3 February 2017 04:41 (seven years ago) link

I tried most of the big streaming subscription services in 2016 and... Tidal's pretty good? idk, everyone loves Spotify

mh 😏, Friday, 3 February 2017 14:33 (seven years ago) link

when i looked at tidal last year their catalog was tiny compared to spotify, they had well under half of the stuff in my main spotify playlist. maybe its expanded now?

ciderpress, Friday, 3 February 2017 14:37 (seven years ago) link

Spotify has the worst sound quality of all of them. Apple Music is p good

ten months pass...

Ah, the time of year when I can listen to this without feeling any weirder than I already do for listening to it in the first place. Love this song.

I have to admit, with no offense to the Grimes family, when that Ajit Pai video came out last week, I was like "why does this guy seem so familiar? Oh yeah, Grimes' step-dad!"

lol wtf seriously?

flappy bird, Saturday, 16 December 2017 22:10 (six years ago) link

love the video

niels, Sunday, 17 December 2017 09:45 (six years ago) link

Ha, I'd missed that Christmas track. Nice.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 18 December 2017 13:21 (six years ago) link

Wait Ajit Pai is Grimes step-dad? I can’t find anything on google confirming this.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 18 December 2017 16:17 (six years ago) link

No, I just meant he looks like it in the video. Indian man wearing sunglasses indoors while smiling eerily and waving a weapon around.

how's life, Monday, 18 December 2017 16:20 (six years ago) link

also, just for clarity's sake, by weapon I'm referring to the hatchet in the grimes video and the nerf gun in the ajit pai video.

how's life, Monday, 18 December 2017 16:22 (six years ago) link

Really hope the new One kicks ass so ppl will admit the last one was eehhhhaaaite

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 26 December 2017 00:38 (six years ago) link

yeah because the massive amount of enjoyment I've had from that album would somehow be invalidated by her releasing another great record

attention vampire (MatthewK), Tuesday, 26 December 2017 00:51 (six years ago) link

The release of Art Angels is the best thing that’s happened in the past five years.

treeship 2, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 01:05 (six years ago) link

if the new one sucks there is no chance d-40 will admit art angels was a radiant masterpiece, so I think we all hope it's good

ogmor, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 15:06 (six years ago) link

only thing approaching Art Angels for me the past few years is the Fever Ray s/t

omar little, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 18:27 (six years ago) link

Visions >>>>>>>>> Art Angels. Not holding out much hope for the next one.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 18:30 (six years ago) link

my take is
Art Angels >>>>>>>>> Visions

we should poll

ANU (sisilafami), Tuesday, 26 December 2017 18:36 (six years ago) link

Visions revealed a promising artist. Art Angels made good on that promise.

Moodles, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 19:24 (six years ago) link

art angels is alllllright imo, kind of feels like she's dodging the spotlight but not in a way that feels confident or purposeful

its a progression from visions but i think visions promises a lot more, or contains more potential in its dna

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 26 December 2017 19:27 (six years ago) link

i agree. i like art angels a lot, but the 3 year gap between albums compounded the disappointment... it really sounds like she skipped an album in between the two, which we know she did... there's a dearth there, despite both albums being great.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 19:37 (six years ago) link

Crystal ball desserves more love

kolakube (Ross), Tuesday, 26 December 2017 19:37 (six years ago) link

But albums are brilliant and Grimes rules. If the new album is half as good as any of them we’re good. Frankly a bit afraid it might not live up to expectations, no idea how you can follow up and improve on what she has done so far.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 26 December 2017 20:47 (six years ago) link

i revisited art angels the other week and i’m sorta with deej. only about half of it really hits imo (kill v. maim, pin)

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 26 December 2017 20:50 (six years ago) link

yeah both albums are great but there's one missing in there. it's hard to explain but her catalogue feels weirdly sparse & empty, the leap from Visions to Art Angels is too big and incongruous, it feels like the third album in a trilogy and Visions the first.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 22:04 (six years ago) link

iirc grimes' evolution in sound between visions to art angels was partly due informed by her live touring

kolakube (Ross), Tuesday, 26 December 2017 22:08 (six years ago) link

She made an album then scratched it. That material was, I guess, the missing link in her development

treeship 2, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 22:23 (six years ago) link

right, that's what i was saying. i'm not criticizing her decision, we're not entitled to that work if she doesn't want to release it, i'm just saying the missing link sticks out to me when I put Visions next to Art Angels

flappy bird, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 22:24 (six years ago) link

although worth noting that the REALiTi demo- a recording that people worship- is from that scrapped album

flappy bird, Tuesday, 26 December 2017 22:25 (six years ago) link

there are a few duds on Art Angels - Belly of the Beat feels meandering and SCREAM is completely out of place - but the highs (nearly all the rest of it) are so high that it doesn't bother me much and I would definitely put it above Visions even though Visions is a bit more of a cohesive whole

as far as the unreleased material goes I really hope that David gets a proper release someday, that's one of her best tracks

ufo, Wednesday, 27 December 2017 01:37 (six years ago) link

Realiti (aka the best song from the 2010’s) is the missing link you’re looking for.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 27 December 2017 01:44 (six years ago) link

^ best song psshaw.

kolakube (Ross), Wednesday, 27 December 2017 01:49 (six years ago) link

i mean it's very good but realti's sort of taking on a life of its own iirc

kolakube (Ross), Wednesday, 27 December 2017 01:50 (six years ago) link

*taken

kolakube (Ross), Wednesday, 27 December 2017 01:50 (six years ago) link

could that not be because it's one of the best songs of the 2010s?

attention vampire (MatthewK), Wednesday, 27 December 2017 01:53 (six years ago) link

Indeed it could, point taken

kolakube (Ross), Wednesday, 27 December 2017 01:56 (six years ago) link

Yes. It’s very frustrating. The live video of her performing it is something else.

It’s insane for someone to write a song like that but have so much other great material they don’t even bother releasing it.

treeship 2, Wednesday, 27 December 2017 02:17 (six years ago) link

artists can do whatever the fuck they want, if it comes about the audience then that's where shit goes south tbh

kolakube (Ross), Wednesday, 27 December 2017 02:19 (six years ago) link

I agree. Still.

treeship 2, Wednesday, 27 December 2017 02:19 (six years ago) link

cheers mate, it is a great song

This feels like the truth is more dialectical than that but sure

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 27 December 2017 16:52 (six years ago) link

Yeah probably an overstatement on my part, probably should take it easy. Steering this convo back to realti as a missing link (and perhaps "go"), how much do you all feel realti demo gave an indication to her direction on art angels? Feels like it still had a lot of the vocal presence of visions. When California hit on art angels it felt like that summed up where she was at for her audience

kolakube (Ross), Wednesday, 27 December 2017 20:21 (six years ago) link

I'd say your right, Realiti is kind of the zenith of the Visions style whereas Art Angels shed the buried-vocal feel in its quest for high pop.

attention vampire (MatthewK), Wednesday, 27 December 2017 20:28 (six years ago) link

These are the rare and unreleased songs:

Gloam
Ham Mermaid
The Crazy Doctor
World Brain
Behaviour
The Eye
whoknoidontno
Voignamir
emancipated reality vixen
Fifteen Minutes To
Black Hair
Unknown Track (unplugged)
(Things That Were Not)
Unknown Track #02
Saturn Princess
Fragments of The Future
Ya vas Lyubil
David
Sleepwalking
Go (SXM Version)
REALiTi (Demo)

Surely at least an EP connecting Visions and Art Angels can be made from these (Go and Realiti as singles)

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 27 December 2017 21:32 (six years ago) link

i get the feeling she's made a purposeful decision to not release that material, for whatever reason

treeship 2, Wednesday, 27 December 2017 21:33 (six years ago) link

Iirc she didn’t feel Realiti was that good (which is bonkers) or didn’t feel like it belonged on her newfound art pop sound for artangels. I suppose that applies to all of those... she didn’t feel like they were part of the new era.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 27 December 2017 21:37 (six years ago) link

maintain that album version >>>>
