the spectacular casting that would be olivia colman v a young spunky man to boost ratings

Well I predict every role on British television will be played by Olivia Coleman by the end of the year, so this may be not far off.

Michaela Coel

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Tuesday, 31 January 2017 09:39 (seven years ago) link

she would be great!!

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 31 January 2017 09:55 (seven years ago) link

xp to chap: she's already been in doctor who as someone else, which means she's definitely in the running

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 31 January 2017 09:58 (seven years ago) link

Nina Sosanya, as payback for Fear Her (and she's great)

yesss

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 31 January 2017 10:01 (seven years ago) link

Good at comedy, great hair, excellent "fuck off and die" expression, that's basically all you need for a Doctor

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 31 January 2017 10:07 (seven years ago) link

Jonathan Pryce would be incredible but he'd make an even better Master.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 31 January 2017 10:29 (seven years ago) link

Elizabeth Sladen would be amazing casting, but that's a moot point. I want a thirteenth capable of playing malice and sarcasm. My favorite doctors (T. Baker, Ecc, Pertwee, the glimpse of John Hurt, even Tennant in his best moments) are most capable of playing nasty and hard-edged. They're arrogant and brought to compassion by the influence of their companions. The whackier incarnations (Davison, C. Baker, McCoy, Smith, much of Capaldi) don't do as much for me.

Moot doesn't really cover it, she's dead.

It's quite a challop to claim that Peter Capaldi isn't particularly capable of playing nasty and malicious!

Matt DC, Tuesday, 31 January 2017 10:50 (seven years ago) link

otm, he makes pertwee look like wet lettuce in that regard

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 31 January 2017 10:51 (seven years ago) link

Is it? It wasn't mean to be –– his performance reads to me churlish and tongue-in-cheek rather than outright nasty. It always feels to me as if Moffat, et al. were afraid to let him truly off the leash. I'm not saying he should've played the Doctor as Malcolm Tucker, but a step in that direction might've been invigorating. As is, he was kind of lovable crank; a grandpa who'll snarl and then triple-pay you for mowing the lawn.

potential grizzly (remy bean), Tuesday, 31 January 2017 10:56 (seven years ago) link

I preferred Capaldi's weirdo, emotionally unavailable take in his first season vs. Cool uncle in the 2nd. But splitting hairs.

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 31 January 2017 11:02 (seven years ago) link

I think the distinction between "the Doctor can play" and "the actor playing the Doctor can play"?

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 31 January 2017 11:03 (seven years ago) link

Yeah Capaldi was excellent (and a real dick) in his first season. Became less interesting in his second but then everything did.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 31 January 2017 11:27 (seven years ago) link

Hayley Atwell wants to be the Doctor and would be great and just had her US crime procedural show cancelled I think? So that feels doable.

I also wouldn't object to Eddie Redmayne tbh although obviously he's too big already plus he'a already basically playing the doctor in a film series which has only just started.

JimD, Tuesday, 31 January 2017 13:08 (seven years ago) link

OMG yes to Atwell, please. She's just the best and should probably be in everything, but I'll settle for Who

Alternately: Jason Statham, Tommy Davidson, Dabney Coleman, Nina Hagen, Bill Hader, CCH Pounder, or Jesse Camp.

Tim Roth has apparently been floating his name. Now that'd be a thing.

Grace Jones

Jenna Louise Coleman would be a good Doctor. Just saying. But I think she's going to be busy with Victoria for a number of years.

A talking corgi

erry red flag (f. hazel), Tuesday, 31 January 2017 15:12 (seven years ago) link

Oh christ it's going to be Billie Bloody Piper isn't it?

chap, Tuesday, 31 January 2017 15:20 (seven years ago) link

Jason Statham as the Doctor but only if he is playing it like he's in the Transporter movies

ornate orchestral arrangements (DJP), Tuesday, 31 January 2017 15:21 (seven years ago) link

would prefer his character from Spy as the Doctor

erry red flag (f. hazel), Tuesday, 31 January 2017 15:38 (seven years ago) link

Billie Piper might actually be cool. Yank speaking, but I've never actually understood the hatred for her. Lots of bad writing she suffered through, but she was a fine performer IIRC

rb (soda), Tuesday, 31 January 2017 15:55 (seven years ago) link

Billie Piper in and of herself is fine, it's the baggage that comes with what RTD did with Rose that is my problem.

ornate orchestral arrangements (DJP), Tuesday, 31 January 2017 16:00 (seven years ago) link

Yeah I don't object to her as a person/actress, but she should no way ever be in Doctor Who ever again (over here she's slightly tarnished by the baggage of her tabloid relationship with Chris Evans (not Captain America Chris Evans) as well).

chap, Tuesday, 31 January 2017 16:10 (seven years ago) link

Atwell would be great, can certainly carry a leading role

Tim Roth slept with someone I know therefore can't be Dr Who as it's too ick. Also I have a weird feeling that he's a terrible actor

Tim Roth would not be right at all.

What is Toks Olagundoye up to these days?

ornate orchestral arrangements (DJP), Tuesday, 31 January 2017 16:50 (seven years ago) link

six months pass...

Can't for the life of me find the current Who thread. What do we think of the bizarre companion rumours?

chap, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 11:03 (six years ago) link

Not gonna say more other than seems a bit off that the majority of female companions have been gorgeous 20 somethings, and the first male companion to a female Doctor is him.

chap, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 11:05 (six years ago) link

Not v keen on anyone who has endorsed a Garry Bushell 'book'

Gulley Jimson (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 30 August 2017 11:08 (six years ago) link

It's kind of a jerk move to have the first companion be a more well-known actor than the Doctor

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 11:37 (six years ago) link

(If that is the case.)

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 11:37 (six years ago) link

I guess Billie Piper was slightly more well known than Eccleston back in 05?

chap, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 12:30 (six years ago) link

I liked him in Law & Order UK

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 13:39 (six years ago) link

He's not terrible, but he's kind of a poor man's David Jason/Dennis Waterman hybrid

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 13:43 (six years ago) link

I don't think I've ever seen him act.

He's excellent in Law & Order UK. I might be alone in really liking his turn in Coronation Street as well. I'm basically totally pro-this as Bradley Walsh the actor is a very different beast from Bradley the game show host (though I think he's brilliant on The Chase as well but absolutely get how only knowing him from that and Wheel of Fortune and that would make you wary).

It's great how Americans don't get the baggage that goes with UK celebs, I think Corden* and Tate (and probably Barrowman) went down way better outside the UK where they all arrived with tons of baggage.

* I know you have him now, but when he was in Doctor Who he was very much ours

ailsa, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 23:17 (six years ago) link

true. I had no reservations with Corden at the time and still rate his first episode very highly.
