Partway through this one--just got to the hammer incident--and it's quite astonishing.

five months pass...

my new favorite: Real World recaps with Dave Holmes & Mike Doughty called 'Truu Stowray'

It's only partly recap - the rest is reminscences about what they were both doing at the time of the first season (1992), recollections about sexuality, music, New York City, etc

it's great. I'm only a casual RW fan but the conversation itself is really good

episodes are short, 30-40 minutes, and they just have a great conversation flow that is tbh kinda rare among the podcasts that I listen to. I said on FB, so many shows spend so much time explaining their pop culture references to each other or to the audience in a way that just grinds things to a halt so often. Dave & Mike just go, they are on each other's wavelength and it just has such a snappy good pace

and I suuuper love Dave Holmes so that helps

Yoni Loves Chocha (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 19 July 2017 17:28 (six years ago) link

I quite like the Supercontext podcast. Two guys pick a particular pop culture item and dissect it, with an emphasis on its context within wider culture. My only problem is that some episodes feel too short - they end rather abruptly, when it seems like the conversation has more ways to go.

don't know why it took me so long to listen to this but First Day Back is like the platonic ideal of the form. it has a million little tropes that i usually roll my eyes at but is just so perfectly put together that it doesn't matter at all. lol i feel like steve coogan saying "liquid football" but seriously it is that good. this season takes the true crime format as a jumping-off point into something more inchoate and submerged and personal.

I'm enjoying RuPaul's podcast, "What's the Tee?" co-hosted by Michelle Visage. Just look down the list of their guests, there's bound to be someone you like. I just heard The B-52's episode and the Maria Bamford one

I spam this all the time but true crime lovers, check out Bloody Murder, a comedy crime podcast done by my bf and his mate Tara, they have a particularly fun line in "Aussie as" stuff. Lots of swearing.

If we're doing self-promotion: Mutts is a podcast where I talk to ppl who, like myself, have a complex relationship to their national/cultural/ethnic identity. It's been dormant for a while but there's a new ep coming up!

I also have a Portuguese cinema podcast but it's, err, in Portuguese, so probably not worth plugging here.

I should also mention i finally am catching up with More Perfect and damn what can you say, the man Abumrad knows how to make a podcast

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 3 October 2017 16:14 (six years ago) link

Well if it’s self promotion time ... I’ve been recording and editing a podcast for a friend of mine for the last two years.
It’s a monthly half hour show where he plays 78s from the 1900s-50s loosely based around a theme.
It’s called “78Man Presents” and new episodes go up on the first Wednesday of the month.
Tomorrow’s episode is about birds, and features a ludicrous record from the 30s by a choir of canaries!

My show is called Giving theb Mic to the Wrong Person, which started last year as a way to talk to people about their cultural obsessions, but this year has morphed with the addition of two co-hosts as ripping on the dumber aspects of online fan culture from an increasingly leftist perspective. We’ve done episodes on everything from the history of Go to how kayfabe works to extended conversations with local comic shop owners.

Our latest ep started with talk about getting overwhelmed with information into more of how Watchmen worked as a comic versus failing as a film. Also we mention Comet the Superhorse.

The only semi-recent podcast I stopped listening to altogether was Maron's WTF. I just got kind of tired of him, but it's been a few years so maybe I should check it out again.

LA Times has a new 6-ep investigative series called Dirty John
True crime, 2 eps already up, it’s pretty good so far if you are into that kind of thing.

I stopped listening to Maron years ago but when I did my take was basically: people's complaints about this dude are that he's an asshole/antagonistic towards his guests, but that at least lead to interesting discussions in the past. But when he became super-popular he lost that impulse and became a sycophant instead, letting ppl use his show to do the same vapid PR shite for their latest project that you'd see on, like, a late night talk show. That and the spectacularly ill-informed musician interviews is what got me to jump off WTF.

I'm digging the podcast Showcase. It's Radiotopia's limited series showcase. They started out with a 6 part series on sound by Damon from Galaxie 500. Now they're running a series about 1980s arcade game conspiracy theories.

Uncivil is a new good one, telling undertold (or completely untold) stories of Civil War heroism by enslaved and free black people alike.

I'm really into Chris Molanphy's Hit Parade podcast. Each episode is dense with facts and figures, but also context and humanity.

As for Maron, I think I like WTF more now than ever. He's not nearly as neurotic as he's been for the past 20+ years, and it's a good look for him.

I’ve just started one focused on interviews with musicians, primarily of the avant-garde jazz persuasion. The first episode is with Roscoe Mitchell; the second will be up in two weeks and will feature Matthew Shipp. Listen here: http://burningambulance.blubrry.net (also findable on iTunes)

This could also go into the Chapo thread, but I’ve recently been digging “Michael & Me,” where Luke Savage & Will Sloan watch a Michael Moore-type agit-prop flick, mostly from the Dubya era. Lotta weird/bad memories, but I like how the Canadian hosts critique Michael Moore’s approach from the left, not to mention taking great joy at the lazy-ass responses from batshit right wingers.

loved the 3 second rule episode of between the ears, more experimental/musical/soundarty than "radio show", but still awesome.

Need to institute new laws saying:

1. no podcast shall commence with 5-10 minutes of the hosts talking about the Skype problems or whatever they just had before getting recording going
2. no stretches of dead airinterspersed with faint tacky-tacking as one host desperately Googles something to get up to date with the other host, and which nobody bothers to edit out
3. no more ads for Blue Apron, which seem to have overtaken squarespace is the no. 1 irritant

Mince Pramthwart (James Morrison), Wednesday, 6 December 2017 00:54 (six years ago) link

I don’t have a lot of time for the “two dudes talking and riffing for 1-2 hours” format

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 02:50 (six years ago) link

Me either, but usually if they edited it properly it would be a hell of a lot more tolerable

I have been listening to lots of history podcasts covering the early years of the 20th century, and the amount of ads for Square Space, Stamps.com, 1-800-flowers, Blue Apron, Me Undies is fucking insane, sometimes 30% of the episode. Stuff You Missed In History Class is the worst offender. I want to link to them but not going to now.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 16 January 2018 00:02 (six years ago) link

Yeah, some podcasts are overboard with the ad reads. Do they get paid even if no one uses them? I always wondered that. I also wonder if there are different tiered ad reads. Some of the podcasts I listen to reads each ad for like 30 seconds, others will take a minute and half, two minutes to read the same ad.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Tuesday, 16 January 2018 00:15 (six years ago) link

Definitely most of these high profile post-Serial podcasts are jacked to the brim with ads. It can be nuts.
