I'm gonna leak one of the albums on the list of 13 essentials. It's the Beastie Boys Liscense to Ill. This was the album that really turned alot of clue-less teens away from the dead corporate rock landscape of bon jovi and uh...I dont know, lets say Brian Adams...and put Rap in their pop parascope...ofcourse their was Run-DMC before that, but that was kind of a novelty--that song the did with aerosmith...kinda cute, but damn! Fight for your Right to Party...now that speaks to kids. PlUS it had a freakin guitar solo...MINT!

as nabisco said elsewhere about the posting of stupid shit on the internet, I don't really think "relax, dude's just an internet troll" excuses anything. like, just because the guy's deliberately being a dickass to piss me off doesn't mean I'm going to feel bad about getting pissed off!

(except I'm not even really pissed off, I've been lolling through most of the thread, but you guys hopefully get my point)

1. We need to organize. Get the word out.

2. We have to be strong and ignore every post of his and resist posting funny pictures, etc. Myself included.

3. We must be strong.

4. It will be tough.

5. Either that or hunt him down in his parents basement and feed him Cheeze Its until he pops like a fat stupid balloon.

Rap has contributed to rock a sense of fighting for itself because rock suddenly needed to fight for its existence, something that before the 80s seemed a given.

This is an insightful comment, the type I was hoping to get more of within this thread. I think Rock was on life support in the mid 80s. In the early 80s, hardcore had kicked some life into it, but hardcore became pretty shitty pretty quickly. There were remnants of it left over in the emerging underground Indie scene of the mid 80s. But its my opinion that this underground Indie is really what saved Rock. Rap/hip hop was just the latest incarnation of mainstream Pop that had been happening since al jolsen sang mammy. The impact that Rap had on Rock that I find important is its experimentation in production and found sound, etc that has been subtley adapted by modern day rock makers...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 September 2006 01:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Final impact:

"Rock" rolls off the tongue and invites other words, thus innovation.

"Rap" rhymes with "Tap", indicating an emphasis on "beats".

But aren't beats infinitely more ephemeral than ROCK? A beat dissipates; a rock sustains.

"I'm gonna leak one of the albums on the list of 13 essentials."

this is too pitiful to be a joke. i think this guy really just glosses over all this hatred and is gonna do what he came to do. wow.

seems that he's far far from understanding how very basic types of interaction should work. the way he views his blog is like a person who getting an email address and just repeatedly checking, seeing they have no mail, thinking it's curious, but not wondering why that might be.

like he's heard the term 'blog', seen that there are people who have high-profile ones, and just naturally assumes that he is in the same level in that particular forum, regardless of the fact that there's no screening, they are free, anyone can get one, etc. etc. like he earnestly believes that people will want to hear his fucking opinions, but puts no thought into the practicality of that, and ignores all observations to the contrary. it's mind boggling, i can't figure this out!

Amigo, if you think Rock is dead, then you really are out of touch...but then again most people are...except me ofcourse. I'm only slightly out of touch, but I'm aware enough to know that there is just as mcuch great Rock being made today as there was 40 years ago. The only difference is that society has changed, and that the best Rock being made today isnt generally heard on the radio...
Rock may not have the social impact it did in the 60s, but sonically you cans still find plenty of quality...
