I haven't been too keen on recent Paul Weller but this one is him at his soulful velvety best imo

you're going to have to do better than "at his soulful velvety best" to get me to listen to Paul Weller...

Headphone Jack (seandalai), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 01:00 (seven years ago) link

I had to come up with something...it's a nice track if you like smooth, lush 70s soul. Sounded perfect strolling in the countryside yesterday morning

An Alan Bennett Joint (Michael B), Tuesday, 24 January 2017 01:50 (seven years ago) link

I have just been listening to that Senyawa album from late last year, I think. It is totally out there world music drone type gear with some marvellous Tibetan throat style chanting vocals.

i really like this SACRED PAWS - Strike a Match debut

Very much enjoyed the new Temples (not the mathrock one) single "Strange or Be Forgotten" -- kinda Super Furry Animalish. I guess they were playing it live last year but recorded it this year...

Man. The new Julie Byrne album just knocks me off my feet, every time. Whispery folky singer-songwriter so good I've not heard since the last great albums by Julie Doiron or Laura Veirs ~ and both have been a while. So stark, so gorgeous.

Aimee Mann - Goose Snow Cone
Japandroids - North East South West
Japandroids - True Love and a Free Life of Free Will

Have you heard Julie Byrne's live cover of Photobooth by Death Cab? She takes it to another level... there's something about her performances which really gets to me and I usually hate that emo lyrics + folk guitar combo.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Tuesday, 31 January 2017 18:29 (seven years ago) link

She recently showed up on my release radar, enjoyed it but couldn't figure out if it was the kind of singer songwriter material the world has plenty of already

niels, Tuesday, 31 January 2017 19:49 (seven years ago) link

Hell no. She's really something else. Give her a shot.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 31 January 2017 19:59 (seven years ago) link

Julie Byrne's "Prism Song" was one of my favourites from 2014, so cool to be reminded me of her now. Will need to check the album out :)

Everything Moves Towards The Sun (Ross), Wednesday, 1 February 2017 07:58 (seven years ago) link

I like her but I wouldn't say she's something else, I'm just a sucker for that kind of stuff (Alela Diane, Marissa Nadler etc.). I prefer Rooms With Walls and Windows but this one is solid too.

Dinsdale, Wednesday, 1 February 2017 08:51 (seven years ago) link

Have you heard Julie Byrne's live cover of Photobooth by Death Cab?

I think you're thinking of Julien Baker.

Hah I was thinking Julien Baker. I love her.

I also like Julie Byrne but yeah I was actually talking about Baker.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Wednesday, 1 February 2017 17:41 (seven years ago) link

I'm not much into emo lyrics but her singing is very genuine so I'll buy in... also she's such a good guitar player! I'm yet to hear a live performance of her where she doesn't have a great tone on her guitar.

she has a dedicated thread FYI. I think she's gonna have a huge year.

Tears On Fire sounds like a merger of Wicker-Man style folk with Air. It works, I think.

Currently into Julie Byrne's new one, Robyn, Kid Koala and Rose Elinor Dougall (ex Pipettes)

Great lists. Very happy to see some more love for Do It by Rae Morris. I only discovered it when Popjustice made it their single of the year. I've been obsessively watching the video since then.
