I also found it interesting how much more conventional (by its own measure) the pre-Frank episodes were. Like in the first few episodes they actually gave a shit about running the bar and increasing profits and were more just socially awkward dudes, and Dee actually briefly gave a shit about Artemis, etc.

My brother got me the DVDs for one Christmas (I'd never seen the show), and he'd only seen post-Frank eps and he kept remarking, surprised at how it was so different than the ones he'd seen and how Charlie's voice was deeper and everything and he wasn't all that insane. it was still a weird show but way more confined.

agree that Mac Day is way up there. RIP Country Mac.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 00:03 (seven years ago) link

in the early eps Charlie could read, Mac was not gay, etc. Things took a little while to solidify.

the Gang Broke Dee about killed me the other night, Lavell Crawford playing "Landslide", Dennis's Morbsian reaction to the infantile comedy around him.

oh and Charlie as Serpico in "Bums: Making a Mess Over the City" (except for the moments where they self-referenced it"), "To the Mare", his spin doctors mix tape....

"The Gang Sells Out", particularly for the one line:

"Gangsters don't sing!"
'What are you talking about? you ever hear of gangsta rap?'

I think this poll might need to happen actually. after a 5-month nom process

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 00:05 (seven years ago) link

xpost yeah - when Charlie was playing Bones and yelled some trash talk, my bro said "THAT'S more like the Charlie I'm used to". I still love all those early eps too, they were just funny for other reasons. Frank brought it to the next level tho. Sort of like he was their Douche Sensei, they all had this shitty behavior in them and he showed them how to use it.

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 00:06 (seven years ago) link

"We gotta definitely do a song about how we do NOT diddle kids...
*sings*
Do not diddle kiiiiids, it's no good diddling kids"

'There is no quicker way for people to think that you are diddling kids than WRITING A SONG ABOUT IT!'

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 00:14 (seven years ago) link

the image of Frank crawling out of a couch mostly nude is forever seared into my brain

akm, Wednesday, 18 January 2017 13:58 (seven years ago) link

you don't associate with any of these characters?

the ghost of lorax past (FlopsyDuck), Thursday, 19 January 2017 03:56 (seven years ago) link

I just watched the Gang Broke Dee yesterday. It was the only episode I missed that season.
Is "Landslide" an actual comedian? He looked familiar.

the ghost of lorax past (FlopsyDuck), Thursday, 19 January 2017 03:58 (seven years ago) link

yes, he's Lavell Crawford. used to be on ComicView, and recently also Breaking Bad.

he was the dude who had one of my favorite bits on ComicView, where he was saying some woman came up to him and asked him if he was Men at Large, and he replied "BITCH, I ain't BOTH of em!"

Neanderthal, Thursday, 19 January 2017 04:02 (seven years ago) link

or that might have been Bruce Bruce. can't recall, but he was funny as hell back in the day

Neanderthal, Thursday, 19 January 2017 04:05 (seven years ago) link

If curious, Lavell Crawford's has a standup special on Netflix from a few years ago. It's good.

iirc he went back in the closet as soon as the boat started flooding

yeah he was only temporarily "out" during brief period when he thought there was no god. But God then proceeded to sink the ship etc.

feel like the other characters wld still be interested in mentioning the development tho

lag∞n, Thursday, 19 January 2017 15:22 (seven years ago) link

all of them are so self-absorbed all of their views of other people are one-dimensional

mh 😏, Thursday, 19 January 2017 15:42 (seven years ago) link

mac being gay has been a big topic of conversation over the years, he finally admits to it and they just drop it, unbelievable

lag∞n, Thursday, 19 January 2017 15:52 (seven years ago) link

it's no longer a weapon

dee still hates being called a bird though

mh 😏, Thursday, 19 January 2017 15:58 (seven years ago) link

was getting caught up on some seasons 8 & 9 eps that i missed. Dee's tossed off "oh I got my nails done like Flo Jo" in Charlie rules the World almost killed me. I love Kaitlin Olson so much.

will, Thursday, 19 January 2017 16:09 (seven years ago) link

last night's had moments but was the weakest of the season so far, appropriately meta since Charlie and Mac's moms really are pretty crappy characters.

evol j, Thursday, 19 January 2017 16:21 (seven years ago) link

Mac's mom yelling "I smell like shit!" in that one episode still makes me howl

Neanderthal, Thursday, 19 January 2017 17:00 (seven years ago) link

i died at charlie thinking mac was talking abt getting soup

lag∞n, Thursday, 19 January 2017 17:03 (seven years ago) link

yesterday's was funny, didn't quite live up to its premise though

voodoo chili, Thursday, 2 February 2017 22:19 (seven years ago) link

"What are the rules?" was pretty brilliant

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 2 February 2017 22:26 (seven years ago) link

Charley as Brendan Dassey was uncanny.

dan selzer, Thursday, 2 February 2017 22:27 (seven years ago) link

i take it the reason i found no lolz was that i haven't seen Making a Murderer?

A big shout out goes to the lamb chops, thos lamb chops (ulysses), Thursday, 2 February 2017 22:33 (seven years ago) link

Love how the show has amped up the production budget as well. Helicopter shots of the city were pretty great and fit the format.

Everything Moves Towards The Sun (Ross), Thursday, 2 February 2017 22:36 (seven years ago) link

Felt like that was a bit if true detective 2 or night of.

But the direct references were making a murderer and the jinx

dan selzer, Thursday, 2 February 2017 22:57 (seven years ago) link

illegal stuff, feeding people to people, stuff like that

mh 😏, Thursday, 2 February 2017 23:16 (seven years ago) link

First use of the c word on Always Sunny, right? I'm sure they weren't even allowed 'fuck' just a few seasons ago...

chap, Thursday, 9 February 2017 23:39 (seven years ago) link

I'm kinda thinking the male stripper episode might be the best of this season. It's definitely Sweet Dee taking her lunacy up perhaps up to the same level as Dennis.

earlnash, Thursday, 16 February 2017 04:37 (seven years ago) link

Drown it in the brown...

earlnash, Thursday, 16 February 2017 04:51 (seven years ago) link

That was amazing all around.

earlnash OTM

Everything Moves Towards The Sun (Ross), Thursday, 16 February 2017 06:19 (seven years ago) link

I love it when Dennis and Charlie get together, that's an underexplored pairing. first Nightman Cometh and now Daddy and Boy!

evol j, Thursday, 16 February 2017 13:37 (seven years ago) link

also: find someone who looks at you the way Mac looks at male strippers.
