It pats itself on the head at the end, but so many music videos are interchangeable and disposable it's pretty cool seeing one with a voice.

It kind of makes me interested in the economics of music videos, too. $100,000 seems like a ton of money to dump on a song that's extraordinarily unlikely to become a hit.

xp i would imagine YT's marketing/publicity budget is part of his contract with Atlantic and the line items for video per album released were set in ink well before the song was released... and given the label turmoil, they probably gave him a very large budget to work with as a sign of commitment. who, ultimately, is paying for that video is something of a different question.

yeah jesus not showing up for concerts, videos, etc etc is one of rap's greatest traditions

i reread the story of the big pimpin video shoot last year and it's always amazing

so i didn't think i "got" this artist for the longest time. i listened to jeffery yesterday though and oh man. i get it now.

the video is really interesting too i think, hes such a twitchy and concealed visual presence but in this video (and in the song) it seems like hes opening up, and the song is called safe, this is very compelling art to me

yeah, it's really, really direct. He usually keeps his head down in his videos (and even on his recent album covers). But here he's not hiding his face or obscuring his words at all. I love his wild stuff, but I'd very much enjoy a full record this open

he's the best recording artist of the past 2-3 years and it's not even close.

i find rap videos often do the thing where they cut every 1.5 seconds so you never really get a good look at their face direct into the camera for more than a word or two, appreciate videos like these with extended shots

Weird in the best way. Just hope he can score a proper hit with one of these songs. He's an underachiever chart-wise.

Those are my least fav kind of longneck posts. This is like when you kept insisting keef was lost in the weeds making shit no one would ever care about right when he'd just released what became two of his biggest records

Both artists dropped before streaming really made a real chart impact. Thug has not "underachieved" on the charts

wow... so far this sounds like yet another step up, even from Jeffery which I thought was brilliant. The production alone..

That's basically what I'm talking about. Since streams do count this time there's no excuses if none of these songs chart. Future managed to get it done with Mask Off, and now he's undeniably a top tier artist, even though I vastly prefer his pre-WATTBA music. Before that his highest charting song featured Drake and we all know those songs don't really count.

As for Thug, Pick Up The Phone was last year's song of the summer in my circles and his highest charting song, but it still only reached #47 on the Hot 100. Not even Good Times managed to make him into a household name. What I'm afraid of is that he has lost his window and will never be the star he could have been - if only the charts had been more like what they are today when he had his breakthrough. Jeffery was good, but it still lacked something. More people were talking about the dress than about the music.

I always liked Faneto, btw, and Can You Be My Friend is one of my favorite singles this year. Keef has still spent a good few years in the wilderness and he'll probably never be the star he could have been, even if those years probably were for the better in helping him figure out what he wanted to be and do.
