endless poetry is very personal and romantic (almost a manifesto), also funny (cake scene wth), and invigorating

Probably going to have to miss this on cinema because I'm getting a cold.

This dude's old enough that seeing this thread revived filled me with dread.

He's pretty confident that he'll get past 100 and he does seem in really good condition.

Although the route of the artist who does annoying shit to annoy his parents is a bit hippie-ish and I don't know if I need to hear another tribute to the counterculture, and its annoying from a Western POV there was counter-balance in 1) Parra's 'boring' teacher/poet, 2) his parents were fascists, and Chile was a fascist state.

I really liked Parra's 'Anti-poems' (should be re-issued imo) and this short story about Lihn by Roberto Bolano is fantastic: http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2008/12/22/meeting-with-enrique-lihn

xyzzzz__, Monday, 9 January 2017 11:39 (seven years ago) link

Love that. I'm always going to have an appetite for tributes to the counterculture. I think it just caught me at the right time, I really enjoyed it

ogmor, Monday, 9 January 2017 12:01 (seven years ago) link

Might be able to see it Thursday if this cold goes away fast but probably not. The disc is out in March.

dance of reality was unexpectedly one of the greatest films i have ever seen about sons and fathers.

endless poetry def has its moments, but i found a rather long portion of the middle a bit indulgent, or without using that tired word, a bit whimsical. esp as he is so pretentious, and his actual art did not seem that impressive (i felt something similar watching paterson... admittedly this might be my feelings about much poetry). i think its also his son's performance. theres something a bit too plain about him. which might have been the point. but the younger actor who played AJ as a child was a more expressive actor than his own son playing him as a young adult.

StillAdvance, Monday, 9 January 2017 15:57 (seven years ago) link

two weeks pass...

went to a double bill of the two latest ones today; dance of reality I enjoyed much more this time around, endless poetry started to wear me out after a while for the reasons others have given and also because I'd kind of had enough AJ by then - per xelab above, he undeniably has a childish streak (and is 1000% a hippy lol) & this can make two two-hour films feel like a real marathon. Pamela Flores (in a double role as mother/lover in EP) is easily the best thing about both films.

Oh also as a fan of disgusted walkouts from Cambridge's merlot-and-popcorn types I had to lol at sitting through 3 hours of jodorowsky (inc an 18 rating for "strong torture" in dance of reality) only to decide that a woman menstruating is just too much

Got the Dune documentary. A little annoyed that there was no mention of Henry Cow involvement.
Interesting about his hatred of film stars shaping the film industry. Makes you wonder why he thought putting up with Dali was a good idea other than respect for his work.

Richard Stanley's accent fascinates me. There should be a documentary about south African accents.

Don't think I really praised Dance Of Reality enough. I found that scene of the father working with the horse very moving when he looked so happy.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 12 February 2017 02:17 (seven years ago) link

dance of reality is seriously incredible.
i hope he finishes all the other films he has planned in this current series.

He comes across as so much more likeable and practical than Gilliam that one could almost imagine that he wasn't as completely impossible and then you remember he was gonna cast Dali and Welles and ah well t was a nice dream a beautiful dream

Young Jodo was such a completely different person to current Jodo. Read any interviews c. "El Topo" and be prepared to be immersed in glorious batshit insanity.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Thursday, 16 March 2017 23:42 (seven years ago) link

I do wonder if they could have done Dune without Dali because his conditions were just insane.

I enjoyed Endless Poetry but much less than Dance Of Reality. I thought it was a shame that his father's redemption was taken away. I've got mixed feelings about how miraculous and wonderful everything is treated as, on one hand it makes everything seem underwhelming because it's not living up to his hype, on the other hand Jodorowsky seems to really believe in it all and there's something really nice about how much value he places in art, even if it's in a cliched and arrogant way. I thought some of the poems were really nice.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 19 March 2017 23:14 (seven years ago) link

I wonder if you actually wonder if they could have done it without dali

The night before all about day (darraghmac), Sunday, 19 March 2017 23:34 (seven years ago) link

Why would the film studio care about Dali? Especially when he was asking for so much.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 19 March 2017 23:40 (seven years ago) link

I can wonder if you actually wonder that without having a conversation about it

But can we just clarify if you are sitting there pondering whether or not one of the five billion other people on the planet couldn't have played the three minute role in question

Because that seems an extraordinary thing to do. Extraordinary.

I had the same reaction to the documentary as the author of the tor.com article. Went in expecting to be fascinated as per other people’s recommendations, but about halfway through something inside snapped, the emperor had no clothes, and it made me furious.

The Island Of Dr Moreau documentary is waaaayyy better but I still think the Dune one is worth a go.

I think his other films have their moments (especially Holy Mountain) but Santa Sangre and Dance Of Reality are the only ones I love.

Holy Mountain > Santa Sangre > El Topo

I've never seen Tusk, The Dance of Reality or Endless Poetry (or Fando y Lis, though I own the Anchor Bay box set that has it).

I really like The Dance of Reality. Has more heart than his other films, while still being batshit crazy.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 23 April 2020 21:54 (three years ago) link

It's funny how the world's caught up to Jod - not just all the music videos and even fashion photo shoots that have stolen from The Holy Mountain over the years, but the fact that there are probably a half dozen telenovelas crazier than Santa Sangre by now.

So those script scans upthread from march 2015 (Alejandro Jodorowsky) ...

In March 2015 a script, an apparent early draft of Dune written by Jodorowsky, appeared on eBay. When asked on Twitter about it Jodorowsky replied: "Es un falso guión con un dibujo idiota." ("It is a fake script with an idiot drawing.")

namaste darkness my old friend (ledge), Thursday, 4 November 2021 13:59 (two years ago) link

Oh wait... In August 2018 however, official copies of the Jodorowsky's Dune script were sent out to backers of Jodorowsky's "Psychomagic, an art that heals" project on Ulule (https://www.ulule.com/jodorowsky/), and this script is almost identical to the "fake" script.

like everything else related to Dune, if you didnt get it before the remake came out, you are going to be paying a lot more for it now..

(goes to ebay, searches for Bruce Pennington cover of GEOD and then faints.)

my opinionation (Hamildan), Tuesday, 23 November 2021 13:12 (two years ago) link

This is a book of original art by Moebius & HR Giger. Did Christies really think it would fetch only $35K?

dinnerboat, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 21:55 (two years ago) link

Oops – should have read to the end (1 of 10-20 copies). Yeah, $3M is something.

dinnerboat, Tuesday, 23 November 2021 21:57 (two years ago) link

A big chunk of that book is available online in decent scans. The storyboards are great. I think there's no way a quarter of that version of Dune as seen in the sboards would've made it onscreen.

‘The Holy Mountain’ is way more preposterous and lurid than even films like Fellini’s ‘Satyricon’ or Pasolini’s ‘Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom’

Dan S, Saturday, 16 April 2022 00:41 (two years ago) link

It is the ultimate 1973 film

Dan S, Saturday, 16 April 2022 00:42 (two years ago) link

of the experimental films from that era, though, I liked Kenneth Anger's 'Lucifer Rising' (1972) and its Bobby Beausoleil score

still haven't seen Pink Narcissus (1971)

Dan S, Saturday, 16 April 2022 00:51 (two years ago) link

There were regular double bills of El Topo and The Holy Mountain in Toronto for many years while they were being kept out of distribution in the States by Allen Klein. Apparently it was a contractual requirement for them to be shown together; I watched them both on the same night and that was WAY too much Jodorowsky at once.
I just saw Santa Sangre recently, with no particular expectations, and was really pleasantly surprised. For a filmmaker who I tend to think of as having a narrow range of effects (doing one particular thing very well), there was a lot of humour and emotional depth to the story that was entirely compatible with the usual grotesquerie. The Dance of Reality, which I saw a few years ago, was soulful in the same way, but I had supposed that that was a recent development in his style, related to the film being autobiographical. I'd probably rank him above Fellini now.

Halfway there but for you, Saturday, 16 April 2022 01:05 (two years ago) link

he doesn't even come close to Fellini
