Maybe it's because my formative experiences as an Evertonian were FA Cup runs with thrilling home wins in front of capacity crowds, followed by agonising exits ('77 & '80 semis, '81 quarters), I really really hate going out of the Cup. I think my dad was the same (never heard the last of the '53 semi). Maybe also because, by January, it's the only possible thing we can win.

Home defeats seem especially bad. I never saw a Gordon Lee side (Gordon Lee ffs) lose at home in the Cup. (We did, but I wasn't there).

(League Cup. Doesn't count)

Michael Jones, Saturday, 7 January 2017 18:34 (seven years ago) link

actually winning the cup didn't shake the bitterness then? :)

illbient microtonal poetry Surbiton (imago), Saturday, 7 January 2017 18:36 (seven years ago) link

No, not really. Actually being at Wembley to see us lose to a Frank Jr goal in 2009, 29 years after Frank Sr scored that stupid bobbling 119th min header for West Ham at the Elland Rd semi replay brought it all back. Football is awful.

in our admittedly feeble cup run defence btw this from lfw is also spot on. the worst thing about the 21 years is we were barely ever moved to give a fuck

While it’s typical football fan madness to complain about the outcome of a random draw, is there not a fucking bone in that velvet bag they could maybe throw us one year? [..] Three ties with Blackburn, four separate matches with Luton Town, three with Sheffield United, three with MK Dons, two with Nottingham Forest, two with Burnley, two with West Brom – it’s like watching the plates go round and round in a motorway service station café.

Re: QPR - reached the 4th round in 2012 and 2013, surely? Beat MK Dons and WBA after R3 replays, respectively. Doesn't make it much better, mind...

(Checking a bit further, QPR have won seven FA Cup ties since reaching the quarters in '95)

roll it just over the line, stop it, pick it up, gently jog back imo

illbient microtonal poetry Surbiton (imago), Saturday, 7 January 2017 21:15 (seven years ago) link

bah this is what i get for not checking my own facts. damn u internet

- 96 vs tranmere was the last time qpr passed the 3rd round without needing a replay
- since 96 qpr have reached the 4th round four times: 2000,01,12,13
- since 96 qpr have been pitted against the exciting luminaries of chelsea(x3), arsenal (walloped by six), everton (walloped by four), and charlton

still wank

when was the last disrespectful tap-in? dimly recall a lower league kerfuffle a few years ago maybe

r|t|c, Saturday, 7 January 2017 21:31 (seven years ago) link

Having been kicked from pillar to post in one match, a 15-year-old [Robbie] Fowler was made to write a letter of apology to Bury’s reserve team manager after rounding the goalkeeper and stopping the ball on the line to kneel down and head it in.

nice to see bbc comparing ali al-habsi to a genocidal iraqi politician, because they both have the same first name.

Bein' Sean Bean (LocalGarda), Saturday, 7 January 2017 22:54 (seven years ago) link

^^ you tweeted that as well and I'm probably daft, but how are they comparing him to a "genocidal Iraqi politician" exactly?

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 7 January 2017 23:30 (seven years ago) link

They're comparing him to the cousin of a genocidal Iraqi politician, no? The original joke was in pretty bad taste too

Number None, Saturday, 7 January 2017 23:34 (seven years ago) link

oh wait, it's a direct quote from the commentator

Hearing a female commentator on MotD now, a first?

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 7 January 2017 23:46 (seven years ago) link

Jacqui Oakley's been on there for ages

Number None, Saturday, 7 January 2017 23:47 (seven years ago) link

Never heard her before, soz. But good to hear.

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 7 January 2017 23:49 (seven years ago) link

Anyway, LG was implying that the BBC were making a comparison to Chemical/Comical Ali with their headline. But the commentator says "it gets more comical every time you see it" at the end of the clip and I doubt he was inferring anything

I refuse to believe that Millwall beating Bournemouth is the "biggest cup upset of the weekend". Just fuck the very idea of that being an upset.

calzino, Sunday, 8 January 2017 00:07 (seven years ago) link

Pleat described a Sutton players attributes today as being "tall, strong, black" so anything's possible with the Beeb

Oh man

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 8 January 2017 00:29 (seven years ago) link

we have a commentator on local bbc who always compares the likeness of any non-white players with one particular 90's era non-white player. It doesn't matter if there is no discernible likeness at all, it is always "he looks a bit like Baldry" who he probably once described as our very own Trevor Sinclair.

Leeds united getting handed their own arses in that first half, but there is no way the big lads up front for Cambridge can run around like that for another 45
