over/under for HOU/OAK is 36.5, which is the lowest I've ever seen in a playoff game. still think it'll go under, even 17-14 is more scoring than I can imagine for this game

NYG/GB is gonna be the best game on the slate, though as a Packer fan I'm pretty nervous since the Giants have a history of booting us out in Lambeau, and really all they need to do is keep drawing up that deep sideline route and Eli can pass 300 yards easy. hoping the Packers can continue to pile it on but the Giants defense is really good, they've allowed less points than any team besides the Patriots, which surprised me

frogbs, Tuesday, 3 January 2017 19:42 (seven years ago) link

if you look 2nd half of the season only i would guess giants are miles out ahead on their own in terms of scoring def. i think pack going to be made to look like their midseason mess again and giants will win a 24-16 type game. fuck the giants tho, really hope green bay wins.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 3 January 2017 19:50 (seven years ago) link

I think these are pretty big games for Mike Tomlin and Mike McCarthy. Either one of them lose a home playoff game, there would be a whole lot of noise. Obviously the Steelers have a better matchup, but Green Bay has been eliminated by the Giants before.

earlnash, Tuesday, 3 January 2017 21:54 (seven years ago) link

if marvin lewis can go 14 years without winning a playoff game, i think two guys who have won super bowls, are basically always in the playoffs, and have combined for one losing season out of 21 will be okay. neither of them has john elway as a gm

mookieproof, Tuesday, 3 January 2017 22:02 (seven years ago) link

yeah as much as people here want McCarthy to go away, his record speaks for itself. the whole "Rodgers would have 3 titles if not for him" feel bogus to me, it's not like ex-Packers are finding a whole lot of success in other systems.

frogbs, Tuesday, 3 January 2017 22:04 (seven years ago) link

The Bengals are owned and ran by Mike Brown. Whatever record Lewis had, I guarantee the Bengals would be much worse off if someone else coached the club and the 20 years of absolute futility before he got there I would use as an example. Lewis has had a bit of bad luck too, as his best two clubs were knee capped by losing their QB, one late in the season (last year) and Palmer in nearly the first play of the playoff game against the Steelers. Not that there are any excuses for how they lost the Steeler's game last year or whatever the heck happened to Andy in those games against the Texans.

System, Thursday, 5 January 2017 00:01 (seven years ago) link

there was some espn segment I saw that detailed how gb/McCarthy have lost 6 (?) recent playoff games on the last play. I suppose one could twist that anit-mccarthy somehow but I see that as p positive ie theyre right there, could've won much more than they have but for m/l the randomness of nfl outcomes imo

johnny crunch, Thursday, 5 January 2017 15:43 (seven years ago) link

you can also do a lot worse than make the playoffs every season from 09-16

johnny crunch, Thursday, 5 January 2017 15:52 (seven years ago) link

yeah exactly. any time someone says "Rodgers would have 3 rings under a different coach" I have to point out that he might have 3 rings anyway if you change the result of a couple of plays. McCarthy lost four OT playoff games in 10 years, that's rough.

frogbs, Thursday, 5 January 2017 16:25 (seven years ago) link

of course, losing on the last play or in OT has the additional element of not having locked the game up before then.

personally i think mccarthy is fine and gb talent level is perennially overrated.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 5 January 2017 16:28 (seven years ago) link

I do too. A lot of people don't realize that GB hasn't really been an elite level team since 2011, plus they seem to get hit hard with injuries every year. I do wonder what would've happened had they pulled the trigger on Marshawn Lynch, before Lacy they hadn't had a decent runningback in forever. Weird that McCarthy gets so much flack for underperforming while Bill Belichick is still considered the league's best coach, despite only winning one title since 2004. I mean those Patriots teams are perennial 1-seeds but they still lose, by sometimes surprising margins. They went 14-2 and lost to Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez for Christ's sake. Winning in the playoffs is hard.

frogbs, Thursday, 5 January 2017 17:06 (seven years ago) link

GB seems to always have garbage players elevated by the fact that they're surrounded by some great ones.

cannot understand anyone wishing to see Tomlin go, his career winning percentage is better than both Cowher and Noll. not sure anyone else could get that team to a better position than he has, in a conference w/the Pats and a couple of Peyton Manning-led teams.

nomar, Thursday, 5 January 2017 18:05 (seven years ago) link

every team -- except for new england -- has its up and down years, due to injuries or schedule or luck or whatever. if you have one of the top quarterbacks and your coach isn't fuckin jim zorn or something, you should be in the playoffs most years, and that's really all you can ask for. tomlin and mccarthy have exceeded those expectations; chargers coaches somewhat less so. that marvin lewis has done so well with basically shitty QBs is pretty impressive.

seriously tho, the patriots. super bowls are cool but in 16 seasons, in a salary cap era, they have 14 division titles, won at least 12 games 11 times, etc. etc. i h8 them but that's just insanely great

mookieproof, Thursday, 5 January 2017 18:55 (seven years ago) link

yeah I didn't mean that as a slight against the Pats

frogbs, Thursday, 5 January 2017 19:03 (seven years ago) link

I think McCarthy and Tomlin are definitely being tagged for not having the success of Belichick and the Pats. Fans and media kind of forget how unlikely a run like that really is...maybe only the Niners, Steelers, Packers and maybe the old Browns have had a similar decade run like that. Pats are getting close to eclipsing the Niners for length of the success and that club had 2 head coaches and starting QBs in the run.

It happens, keep in mind that John Madden got tagged for not winning back in the 70s. They lost the AFC title game or Superbowl to the championship club like 6-7 years in a row until they won it all. Cowher was totally Andy Reid until he finally got over and won a Superbowl.

As for Lewis and the Bengals, I don't think it is really 'shitty' QB play as much as they were just consistently good enough to make the playoffs kinda more like KC did for a few years there. Dalton has been a pretty good QB, he just has had a few shitty playoff games. Only playoff game they were a favorite was last year against the Steelers and it was all of 1 point. I know I am playing a bit of Captain save a coach, but these details get glossed over a bit.

earlnash, Thursday, 5 January 2017 22:42 (seven years ago) link

I think what makes Packer fans nervous is I think we all know deep down that we got lucky, finding an excellent and insanely durable quarterback in Brett Favre, and then having his replacement be Aaron Rodgers, who is on pace to finish his career as one of the greatest three or so quarterbacks of all time. Favre's debut was 25 years ago. Getting "only" two championships out of that seems, I dunno, kinda low? I mean it's not, but I think a lot of us feel that way. Getting Rodgers at least one more than say, Joe Flacco would be nice.

typical Gruden talking about Oakland not being off to a good start moments before Houston predictably cooled off and fucked away possession with three useless plays

they might have to adopt the CFL's rouge to break the deadlock in this one

oh that isn't a good sign, Raiders LT outright fell down as he tried to block Clowney

i could see this one being one of those AFC playoff games that's completely mundane and bland in the first half and turns into a bizarre barnstormer in the 2nd

i so badly want Oakland to win this. can't imagine waiting 14 years for this and being thrown into such a shitty QB scenario like this.

i haven't heard "uncatchable" called in years and they just called it in favor of seattle on a ball that was.......catchable

call all destroyer, Sunday, 8 January 2017 03:29 (seven years ago) link

hah yeah I just bitched on FB about that - the ball was definitely within his reach if he hadn't been held up by the defender. usually uncatchable was reserved for balls thrown like 70 feet over the receiver's head out of bounds or something.

don't know what to make of that game, the first 25 minutes basically what i expected and then green bay got some breaks and ultimately the hail mary that seemed to kill the giants. i think maybe green bay are actually good tho, cowboys game should be a treat.

Yeah, I really would love to see an odd breakout Superbowl between Atlanta and KC, but that's a snowball's chance in hades of happening. I'm tired of NE, Pittsburgh and f-in GB along with the fact that I don't want the Jerryboys to do anything good. I think there is a fair shot that the Cowboys will f it up at some point though.

Turned away and did not know until this evening that Rofflesberger got hurt in the end of the Miami game.

don't wanna jinx it but this is starting to remind me a lot of 2010, especially if they can get some more no-names to step up. strange that McCarthy, believe it or not, seemed to actually make some effective halftime adjustments

lol @ Odell Droppem Jr. punching the wall at Lambeau, you already proved how tough and manly you were when you were running shirtless in the cold
