iirc in previous years we get a vote spot for a game that didn't come out that year? i'd really like to vote for witcher 3 which was def my game of the year... i'm just a year late to the party.

Mordy, Wednesday, 4 January 2017 15:54 (seven years ago) link

Yeah I'm gonna have the same this year, an extra slot for "game of not-2016" and "biggest disappointment". might even add some other "fun" cats

Subnautica

Though its another never quite finished Steam Early Access open world survival game, I think 2016 is its year of impact.

I'm going to close the nominations in about a week, fyi. Waiting until the end of year music stuff is outta the way. Let's say Feb 1 for now.

why ruin a good tradition? (Will M.), Monday, 23 January 2017 22:07 (seven years ago) link

good, one week should give me time to finish this huge backlog of games i need to play before voting

Mordy, Monday, 23 January 2017 22:16 (seven years ago) link

srsly tho i've been meaning to bring this up somewhere + this seems as good a place as ever. surely i'm not the only person who basically ignores new games until they've come down significantly in price (unless they're truly special), right? this means that i'm rarely playing the game in the year that it was intended to be played but for some reason this doesn't bother me at all. unlike music where i feel a compulsion to "keep up," i really don't mind getting to a game 1-3 years late or even 5-6 depending on what it is. i still haven't played xcom 2 yet but altho i'm sure it's excellent i'm positive i can wait until it's $15 before i dish out.

Mordy, Monday, 23 January 2017 22:18 (seven years ago) link

i do the same thing sometimes, it doesn't happen as much with mobile and browser games which is probably part of why they place so well. Still, some voters still play the big ones, so they place sometimes...

Depending on time and interest, I'm considering re-polling old years in the future. Since this is C&P number 10, maybe do year 1 again in the summer/fall? I also wanna keep up the "generations" polls though, so not sure if it'll fit. These things take a lot of work :/

why ruin a good tradition? (Will M.), Monday, 23 January 2017 22:24 (seven years ago) link

well they're super appreciated i think coint & plick (and generation polls, and other video game polling) probably the best polling on ilx, a place known primarily for its extraordinarily prolific approach to polls

no, of course not. usually buying a game new is a sucker's bet- a good game doesn't rely on being topical or current, and game development heavily incentivizes releasing games that aren't finished yet. buying a game when it's new, in most cases, makes no more sense to me than buying a 3D TV or whatever the second it comes out - there's no real advantage to being on the bleeding edge except bragging rights. there are of course exceptions.

increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Monday, 23 January 2017 22:34 (seven years ago) link

Yeah I am in this boat, hence my nominations (apart from WoW, teacher/mother/secret lover) being small iOS games that I can play in a few commutes.

Also if it's early enough to ask - since it sounds like people may be picking through the poll results for recommendations at various future dates, any chance of returning to putting the system(s) in CRTL-F friendly text with each entry?

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 23 January 2017 22:59 (seven years ago) link

mordy, xcom 2 is $12 in this month's humble monthly! + you get a bunch of other games with it
but yeah, i have a massive old backlog using the same principles, cheap cheap cheap
the only brand new games i generally get tend to be multiplayer because it actually does matter getting in early on those. though i got Overwatch six months late, would've have regretting it at release
(and the odd phone game)

Nhex, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 01:32 (seven years ago) link

Yep, I have the same approach as mordy, down to Xcom 2, which I plan on checking out once it's down to $11. I do deviate from the pattern with some brand new games if I'm pumped enough to check them out, though. Like no mans sky. Sigh.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 24 January 2017 02:31 (seven years ago) link

I also wait until games are on sale. Still haven't played The Witness yet because the best deal is usually 33% off for a $40 game. It was 50% off right around Christmas and I probably missed my best chance.

there's no real advantage to being on the bleeding edge except bragging rights. there are of course exceptions.

The main one being if there's a big multiplayer component, I think? They're usually more fun close to release before everyone knows what they're doing, and later on it's just the hardcore players who are super good. Although a lot of these games probably get better over time through patches for balance etc.

xcom 2 runs v poorly on my mbp but it seems really fun maybe i'll just dish out for the ps4 version (and play it on my mbp w/ beautiful resolution and a controller)

Mordy, Friday, 27 January 2017 23:08 (seven years ago) link

took me a sec to understand you there, what a world we live in now

Nhex, Saturday, 28 January 2017 09:01 (seven years ago) link

omg The Witness is on sale again. Now I just need $20.

billstevejim, Saturday, 28 January 2017 09:48 (seven years ago) link

i beat the original xcom last night (somehow the first time i played it i got up to the final mission before abandoning it so it took almost no time at all to finish it - and it was a cakewalk), restarted the 2nd one this morning. it really is so v good - the reviews are right that basically everything about the original xcom they improved on. and playing it thru the ps4 means that the graphics are crisp and it runs perfectly. i don't love the controller scheme quite as much as using a keyboard + mouse but it is good enough that it really doesn't bother me. i'm really glad it's good too bc i played stellaris last week and man is it disappointing. it's super buggy & boring. the basic framerate is like yr most conventional, standard 4x game but w/out any kind of propulsion or momentum. there literally feels like there's no reason to play. i have v specific complaints about it that maybe i'll save for when it places (either on the main poll, or the most disappointing game side poll or both). on the plus side despite its major flaws i do trust paradox to do right by it eventually. it's not totally bereft of interesting ideas.

Mordy, Sunday, 29 January 2017 20:38 (seven years ago) link

framerate was def supposed to say framework*

Mordy, Sunday, 29 January 2017 20:39 (seven years ago) link

i plan on playing xcom2 very soon as well (and the last guardian).

Karl Malone, Sunday, 29 January 2017 20:40 (seven years ago) link

Hitman
