Any discoveries folks?

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 00:07 (seven years ago) link

realising just how great mesarthim are. looooads i'm excited to hear though

illbient microtonal poetry Surbiton (imago), Tuesday, 20 December 2016 00:09 (seven years ago) link

mesarthim are the new gods

Frobisher, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 00:24 (seven years ago) link

everyone in the world seriously needs to hear this https://mesarthim.bandcamp.com/album/the-great-filter-e-p

it's only 21 minutes of your time. holy shit.

illbient microtonal poetry Surbiton (imago), Tuesday, 20 December 2016 00:26 (seven years ago) link

Really dig Comet Control! It should be in the general EOY poll!
Ignored Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard until a few hours ago due to a general inclination to ignore bands with ridiculous names, but I really liked it.

Frobisher, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 00:26 (seven years ago) link

xp fully agree!

Frobisher, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 00:26 (seven years ago) link

I doubt anything from this poll will make the general poll as either nobody here votes or they dont vote for the same metal albums

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 00:28 (seven years ago) link

i think mammoth weed wizard bastard are from the 'we couldn't think of a good name so here's the shittest and most ridiculously doom-cliche-filled thing we could think of inside thirty seconds' school of band naming

i quite like the name though lol

Astronoid = favourite discovery so far. It's just magical

dance band (tangenttangent), Tuesday, 20 December 2016 00:31 (seven years ago) link

I dont think many people put metal albums in their top 5 and with needing 10-12 votes to get in the 77 you need those people to vote high

and seandalai says most people who vote in this poll dont vote in the big poll (esp the lurkers iirc)

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 00:32 (seven years ago) link

Metallica will likely make the big poll

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 00:33 (seven years ago) link

I've tried too hard to keep on top of new releases over the last couple of years so in the rollout it's usually either stuff I've heard (and liked to some extent more often than not) or just not interested in. That said, I will give Moon Tooth and Mesarthim a proper go.

And I just... don't get Cultes des Ghoules at all.

ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 00:35 (seven years ago) link

v happy I stanned for Astronoid as much as I did

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 20 December 2016 00:40 (seven years ago) link

"What's this? It sounds great". It was Deftones again.

I am also unmoved by CdG. I want them to sound more like the atmosphere their album art generates and they never do.

dance band (tangenttangent), Tuesday, 20 December 2016 00:41 (seven years ago) link

Me too! xp

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 20 December 2016 00:56 (seven years ago) link

is Xoth gonna save my life like Astronoid has?

alpine static, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 00:57 (seven years ago) link

Totally different beast, Cthulu-referencing, scrappy, fun as fuck... melodic tech-thrash? Maybe? I'm bad w/ subgenres

https://xoth.bandcamp.com/album/invasion-of-the-tentacube

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 20 December 2016 01:04 (seven years ago) link

I'll bet Xoth makes it. It only took three or four votes to get in the top 100. If three other ppl said they really liked the album then it's prob in, and if it hasnt shown up yet, that means it got more votes than expected...

fuck like fight like fuck (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 20 December 2016 01:46 (seven years ago) link

Xoth was top 10 for me

Yelploaf, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 01:52 (seven years ago) link

Enjoying the Anicon. Picked up the Xoth CD/download on bandcamp just now - really enjoying that even if it hasn't placed.

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 03:11 (seven years ago) link

I wanted to like the Ulcerate more. It's impressive, but I guess too oppressive. OTOH, Nails, The Body, Zao, Wormrot and Trap Them have been handy for channeling rage since November, so perhaps I'll warm up to other extreme stuff too. Bossk, Slabdragger, Boss Keloid, Discharge, Revocation and Ihsahn are other new ones I've been listening to this week.

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 03:23 (seven years ago) link

If it weren't for the vocals, I just might have included that Xoth album too. Riffs!

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 03:32 (seven years ago) link

I didn't really like the Ihsahn album, I think some of the electronic elements seemed either heavy-handed or just plain goofy.

Tom Violence, Tuesday, 20 December 2016 03:34 (seven years ago) link

Glad to see Wrong, Occult Burial and Cadaveric Fumes placing. So far I've wishlisted Skaphe (reminds me of the churning murkiness of Aevangelist), Wormrot, Howls of Ebb (don't know why I didn't get around to this when I loved "Vigils of the 3rd Eye"), Eight Bells, Chthe'ilist, and Inquisition.

Those Mesarthim keyboard melodies are super cheesy. Filter out the screeching, blend the guitars in with the other synths, and you have bad elevator new age music. Clown college wallpaper. Fighting off some stupid cold virus everyone is getting and didn't want to wake up, so I'm unfiltered ;)
