Pie vs. Cake

I voted pie but I have to mention the deconstructed cheese course my daughter had when we went out for a birthday dinner for my wife Thursday — pear spice cake with blue cheese frosting, served with candied walnuts and port sorbet. Sometimes cake is the proper structure for playing around with flavors.

there's no food that can't be improved by turning it into a pie. can't say the same about cake. too easy a decision.

pies won the space race against cakes and you could actually survive atmospheric re-entry inside a pie - FACT.

The only time I've ever missed a flight was when I overstayed at a House of Pies in Los Angeles.

apple pie is one of my favourite foodstuffs

my current recipe i use olive oil for the crust - not bad and terrible like it sounds.

i love a Black Forest Gateau but it doesn't outweigh all possible piemutations

Rock Wokeman (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 10:53 (seven years ago) link

Can't believe this shit tbh.

Pizza is not a pie. It's stuff-on-bread. You'd never say cheese-on-toast was a fucking pie.

Quiche is not a pie either, ffs. It's stuff-on-pastry. A pie has a LID. That's how you know it's a pie. Cottage pie. Fish pie. Defined by their lids.

A sausage roll is not a pie, either, not everything with pastry is a fucking pie.

Cheesecake is a CAKE. That's why it's called cheeseCAKE.

Americans are foul and wrong. First they elected Trump and now this.

more than any other food, even passable pies and cakes sometimes just feel like big hunks of stuff, and eating them becomes a very self-conscious process of piling this inert matter into your mouth. even the most disastrous cake is recognisably human in its origins, but the worst pies are inedible, anti-human husks, baked deposits that instill a dasein dread and are only fit to be buried deep in the earth. a truly awful pie makes the world colder and gloomier

on the other hand they can both be delicious

Sandwich involves bread.

A pie has a LID. That's how you know it's a pie. Cottage pie. Fish pie. Defined by their lids.

false, pumpkin pie, sweet potato pie etc don't have lids

quiche is a pie

marcos, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 14:46 (seven years ago) link

if you have to bake it in a pie dish then it is a pie

marcos, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 14:46 (seven years ago) link

but i admit there are other pies that are not baked in pie dishes. galettes are pies right

marcos, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 14:46 (seven years ago) link

the lid is a red herring, i would put quiches, flans, tarts in to the realm of pie, which is really "solid (baked?) crust plus filling" - i'd say pizza is an outlier but not argue too hard, a calzone is more or less a pasty - which also belongs to the realm of pie, alongside sausage rolls

What about crustless / bottomless pies?

Food taxonomy is for wankers, really.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 15:13 (seven years ago) link

What's an example of a crustless/bottomless pie?

aaaaaaaauuuuuuuuu (melting robot) (WilliamC), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 17:15 (seven years ago) link

Shepherds pie. Cottage pie. Fish pie. No crusts, no bases, no pastry at all. Several pies in the uk just have pastry lids and no bottom.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 17:24 (seven years ago) link

Shepherd's pie's so-called lid is a layer of mashed potatoes, i.e., an ingredient, it's not a pie lid that in any way resembles a pastry. If you let shepherd's pie in then the whole lot has to come in with it, including pizza. As a shepherd yourself you should know this

though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 17:28 (seven years ago) link

shepherd's pie is a casserole, not a pie

ciderpress, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 17:35 (seven years ago) link

also must allow doo doo pies

tried Blue Apron and we died (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 17:41 (seven years ago) link

tbh i think shepherd's pie really is more of a casserole

jason waterfalls (gbx), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 17:43 (seven years ago) link

yeah i think accepting that shepherd's pie isn't a pie is akin to accepting that cheesecake isn't a cake - both obviously true but left to us through some unfortunate quirk of languange

Yeah, shepherd's pie and cottage pie aren't really pies to me. I'm not entirely convinced by quiche being a pie either, though. (I still voted for pie.)

are we having another pie poll

F♯ A♯ (∞), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 19:31 (seven years ago) link

I've never thought of cheesecake as a pie before, or even as a cake, really, but it's as much a pie as key lime pie, now that I think about it. It's a good question.
