voted pie (peak value) over cake (career value)

aaaaaaaauuuuuuuuu (melting robot) (WilliamC), Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:29 (seven years ago) link

if pizza is allowed as pie, pie will wipe the floor with cake. or something else a bit less disgusting sounding.

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:30 (seven years ago) link

not necessarily, if pizza is allowed as pie then it stands to reason that gin & tonic can be allowed as cake and then it's all to play for again

banfred bann (wins), Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:32 (seven years ago) link

i think for this poll we are supposed to consider the traditional dessert pie, excluding pizza, cheesecake, savoury pies, etc. otherwise putting it up against cake makes less sense.

ciderpress, Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:32 (seven years ago) link

cheesecake is probably the grayest area here

ciderpress, Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:33 (seven years ago) link

cherry is wonderful, strawberry rhubarb is wonderful, lemon meringue is wonderful, blueberry is just okay tho

man you think you know a guy and then he busts in with a "blueberry is just ok" take. blueberry pie done right is a top five pie

coconut cream > tart cherry > chess > apple > other

aaaaaaaauuuuuuuuu (melting robot) (WilliamC), Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:42 (seven years ago) link

The album title is presumably a reworking of the famous "Let Them Eat Cake" quote

dance band (tangenttangent), Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:43 (seven years ago) link

want to make a lemon chess pie now hmmm

ciderpress, Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:44 (seven years ago) link

im assuming this is referring to dessert pies and dessert cakes so does not encompass fatayer/samosas/empanadas vs spanish tortillas. savoury pies vs savoury cakes is difficult. sweet pies vs sweet cakes is easy, clear pies is the answer

marcos, Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:44 (seven years ago) link

imo pizza is very tricky because its crust has yeast. proper cakes and pies really don't, I think -- pie crust, savory or sweet, is flour & shortening whether it's butter or lard or vegetable shortening. cakes that rise are muffins or biscuits. pizza really kinda is just the perfection of savory pie but in my view can only enter a pie vs. cake poll on somewhat false pretenses

though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:45 (seven years ago) link

agree that leavening is disqualifying here but in a grand taxonomy of food pizza is clearly in the same branch as pie

ciderpress, Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:47 (seven years ago) link

chocolate bourbon pecan pie is the apex dessert btw

what is a "clear pie"

¶ (DJP), Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:48 (seven years ago) link

that does sound good

I have an ongoing feud with one of my friends over blueberry pie, only it specifically has to be made with Maine blueberries; I find this detail/distinction so insufferable and enraging that my only recourse is to make sure every single blueberry pie I encounter is put directly into the trash

¶ (DJP), Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:53 (seven years ago) link

what is a "clear pie"

single crust with a vodka & cornstarch filling?

jclc otm a good blueberry pie is one of the best, w/ some vanilla ice cream

marcos, Thursday, 15 December 2016 18:58 (seven years ago) link

i have had some real good cake in my time but this is pie in a walk

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:00 (seven years ago) link

xp okay sure but when you spend a large amount of time with a person who regularly says "blueberry pie is the platonic ideal of all pies, but ONLY if made with Maine blueberries and ONLY when purchased in Ogunquit or Kennebunkport at these specific locations" you start throwin' 'bows

¶ (DJP), Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:01 (seven years ago) link

also sweet potato pie > blueberry pie

¶ (DJP), Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:02 (seven years ago) link

yea that is definitely dumb xp

pumpkin vs sweet potato which is better

lol this is not even in doubt

sweet potato pie is delicious, pumpkin pie tastes like an afterthought in comparison

¶ (DJP), Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:04 (seven years ago) link

It would seem more rational to me to keep the blueberry pie and throw that friend in the trash.

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:05 (seven years ago) link

wtf I'm not gonna eat my friend

that's just weird

¶ (DJP), Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:06 (seven years ago) link

well I'm not gonna eat that pie either after I put it in the trash so that's not a fair comparison point

this whole "it must only be made with THIS kind of [ingredient]" mindset is truly the most punchable mindset imo. Ottolenghi's cookbooks have a lot of "3 kaffir lime leaves" stuff but I asked him on Twitter about this and he said really guilelessly "oh, it's really ok, the main thing is the proportions, not the exact variety of whatever" and I realized that the "blueberries (Kennebunkport Sport variety where possible)" mindset is probably a lure for people who like to think of themselves as particularly discerning, a mindset which, if you appeal to it in your cookbooks, will sell you some cookbooks

average pie is better than average cake

the best cake is better than the best pie

this is basically the same thing as Beatles vs Rolling Stones

lol I love this

this dude and my wife made up a sweet potato pie recipe which was dependent (at his insistence) on using Japanese sweet potatoes because they are naturally sweeter than American sweet potatoes and therefore not as dependent upon added sugar (even though he used Splenda)

I can't front though, it was a bomb ass pie

¶ (DJP), Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:12 (seven years ago) link

yeah that's the thing, it's the same with SOME music dudes too, this insufferable mindset can lead you to some deeply sufferable chow/tunes

Cake might win for non-gustatory reasons why because Cake Wrecks has brought so much joy into my life.

My Lunch Is Older Than Your Lunch (Old Lunch), Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:20 (seven years ago) link

Wrecking a pie is never quite as hilarious.

My Lunch Is Older Than Your Lunch (Old Lunch), Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:20 (seven years ago) link

Yeah that Maine thing is ridiculous obviously Alaska blueberries are the only reasonable option.

JoeStork, Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:21 (seven years ago) link

wild vs domesticated blueberries are pretty different but i can't imagine the location matters beyond that

ciderpress, Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:24 (seven years ago) link

I gotta go with pie because it can reach heights that I have not experienced with cake. However if I get handed a slice of mediocre cake that's nbd, if I get mediocre pie that's a fucking chore.

JoeStork, Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:26 (seven years ago) link

this is so easily pie that im ashamed for the threadstarter, who til now had some credibility on ilx food threads

never have i felt closer to darragh

mookieproof, Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:46 (seven years ago) link

xp yeah, I don't really know enough about varietal flavor differences and I've never had Maine blueberries, though my totally subjective feeling is that the Alaskan blueberries I've had have been superior to the WA ones. Supposedly they have more antioxidants but who knows.

JoeStork, Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:47 (seven years ago) link

most cakes disappoint imo but a really outstanding chocolate cake is better than most pies

marcos, Thursday, 15 December 2016 19:50 (seven years ago) link

when you reach the highest manifestations of both pie and cake, the only suitable reaction to either one is awe and delight, so comparison at that level is difficult.

I'm gonna disagree with these. I've had plenty of mediocre cake from office parties to church lunches, and binned plenty of them as a result, to the point where that cake better look really damn good or I'm passing. Otoh I would eat pretty much any pie.

#2: No way.

mookieproof, Thursday, 15 December 2016 20:17 (seven years ago) link

It's truly insane. Four-layer sponge cake soaked with rum syrup, with layers of rum-spiked cream in between and around the whole pile of cakes, then coated with a rum-spiked whipped cream. In total: 14 eggs, but no butter!

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 24 December 2016 20:26 (seven years ago) link

I think my wife is making a chocolate bourbon pecan pie for tomorrow's dessert festivities. At least I heard the idea floated and now it better happen otherwise a bunch of presents are going straight into the fireplace.

I seem to hear in my mind the faraway voice of an unknown genius who is saying:

"Hmmm. Lovely. Could anything be better than this pecan pie? (inspiration hits like a ton of bricks) Wait! I know! A bourbon pecan pie! But wait! Dare I lift my eyes yet higher, where on yonder heights I seem to see...yes! (swoons briefly) A chocolate bourbon pecan pie!"

At which point the owner of the voice expires in delight and a welter of exclamation points.

pecan pie + lemon meringue are my 2 pies

surm, Saturday, 24 December 2016 21:06 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, lemon meringue or key lime or cherry for me but on the other hand anything with a healthy booze component is a-ok

surm, Saturday, 24 December 2016 21:30 (seven years ago) link

No. It doesn't even have a crust, does it? Just ice cream in a shell of merengue on cake?

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 24 December 2016 21:36 (seven years ago) link

lol yes

surm, Saturday, 24 December 2016 21:42 (seven years ago) link
